[4] of cover Includes bibliographical references It is now recognized that tourism can contribute to poverty alleviation through job creation and productive employment by offering labour-intensive jobs and small-scale business opportunities that generally employ a high proportion of women and unskilled youth. Tax revenue derived from tourism activities can be used to improve education, health and infrastructure development, all of which are important for poverty alleviation. Culture and tradition can be revitalized and the natural environment can be preserved through appropriate and sustainable tourism development. UNESCAP has been undertaking a number of activities to promote sustainable tourism development, including pro-poor tourism development. Within this framework, UNESCAP organized a Seminar on Poverty Alleviation through Sustainable Tourism Development, which was held in Kathmandu in August 2003. The Tourism Review No. 25 summarizes the papers presented by country representatives attending the Seminar and two concept papers prepared by experts on the topic of tourism development and poverty alleviation. The tourism development models which are presented place great importance on sustainable tourism and pro-poor tourism. While the most desirable goal focus on the benefits of tourism and its positive impact, it is also clear that any negative impact from tourism must be prevented.--Publisher description |
