SUMMARY
Zavojane, a village in the Biokovo-Vrgorac region, was first mentioned
as a toponym, Zahojani, in the Charter of Kreševo issued in 1434 as well as in
the sixteenth-century Ottoman defters. The village is situated in the western
part of the Vrgorac district, on a plateau and up the hills, nestled between the
mountains of St. Mihovil, Šibenik, Malacki brig, Ober and western Matokit,
and northeast of the Dragljane plateau. Zavojane has a rich history and uncer-
tain present and future: 50% of the village hamlets are abandoned.
The book focuses on the period between 1941 and 1945, the Second
World War. During this period, the village found itself in the maelstrom of
war that began with the capitulation of Yugoslavia, through German-Italian
occupation, the creation of the so-called Independent State of Croatia and the
division of Yugoslavia, ending with the liberation in 1944.
The uprising against aggressors and their local collaborators was orga-
nized by pre-war communists: Ivan Peric, Bariša Čepo, Dane Bokšič, Nikola
Zekulič and their supporters. Ideas promoted by the organized members of the
Communist Party (KPJ) and the Communist Youth Association of Yugoslavia
(SKOJ) proved contagious in the village. These thoughts turned into a mate-
rial force and pushed villagers into armed action. The poor and disempowered
Zavojane peasants, seeking to change their socioeconomic position, provided
fertile soil for new socialist and liberation ideas.
The key reasons why the villagers joined the partisan movement in lar-
ge numbers included the ideological influence of the communist party mem-
bers, communist youth and their supporters; the pressure, from the authorities,
to enlist in the Croatian Home Guard; seizure of weapons and equipment;
social motives; hatred towards the occupying forces and the Ustasha regime
(Ustasha authority was never established in Zavojane); news about the attack
of the Axis powers on the Soviet Union and about uprisings in other parts of
Yugoslavia. An important influence on the villagers, swaying them towards
partisans was exerted by the village parish priest, Karlo Culum.
In June 1941, two partisan units were formed in Zavojane in the makes-
hift bases Čepino brdo and Ajdukova njiva. By the early 1942, partisan groups
had grown into larger companies. The first military unit, Zavojane company,
was established on 13 March 1942 in the cave Zamagorija. It consisted of 50
soldiers under the command of Ivan Peric.
Part of this company, together with partisans from Vrgorac region, left
for the Rilič Mountain as the 5th Vrgorac platoon. It formed part of the 1st So-
uth-Dalmatian company. From the earliest beginnings, partisans from Zavoja-

ne fought not just in Biokovo-Dalmatian troops (especially 1st, 2nd, 4th and 11th
Dalmatian brigades) but also in other partisan units, in Bosnia-Hercegovina,
Serbia and Montenegro. Zavojane villagers did not wait for draft calls to join
the partisan army. In the spring of 1942, 30 young people left the village to
join the partisan movement; in the following year, 70 people left the village in
a single day to fight in the partisan guerrilla.
During Italian military operations Albia (1942) and Biokovo (1943), as
well as frequent Ustasha, Chetnik and German mopping-up operations, villa-
gers were forced to leave their homes and flee from the attackers. The enemy
pressure, murders, incarceration in concentration camps (Prevlaka and Jase-
novac), arson (in the hamlets of Cepo, Duboka, Potpolje, Dubrava and so on)
failed to shake the villagers’ convictions.
The earliest Partisan units were firmly linked to the area in which they
were established. Their primary task was to fight local battles and protect the
local population. The foci of the partisan war were mral areas because par-
tisans could find support there as well as people to recruit into military units
and logistics.
Italians, Ustashas, Germans and Chetniks were frequent “guests” of Za-
vojane. They undertook military mopping-up operations to find any remaining
partisan troops and partisan supporters. The most “successful” were the 13th
Croatian Home Guard battalion, Dusina Ustasha militia lead by Father Ivan
Sumic, and the Preparatory battalion of Imotski. Civilians suffered the most.
More than 300 of the 1100 residents of Zavojane in 1941 were members of
the liberation movement (NOP) as either partisans or partisan supporters. 74
villagers were killed as partisan soldiers; 53 died as victims of fascist terror
and 10 following rulings of the partisan court martial, for breach of military
discipline. Altogether 137 villagers’ lives were lost as direct result of the Se-
cond World War.
The war destroyed the flower of the Zavojane youth, those who were
supposed to create new lives and new perspectives for this remote village.
Stone plaques are the only souvenirs of an untamed generation of Zavojane
patriots. Graves of Zavojane partisans may be found throughout the former
Yugoslavia: for example, 21 partisans from the village died in the Battle of
Sutjeska in Bosnia and Hercegovina. The dead partisans live in the living as a
memory and part of the present. For the antifascist soldiers, the key goal was
to win the war but also to rebuild the country in peacetime.
