adam_text | CKronic pain is a medical mystery, debilxtat-
ing to patients and a. source of frustration fon
further we have to go in unlocking the secrets
evolved from this landscape, one that Inter-
cialties ranging from psychology and physiol-
ogy to anesthesia and chiropractic medicine.
Over the past three decades, researchers, pol-
icy makers, and practitioners have struggled
to define this complex and often contentions
field as they work: to establish standards while
navigating some of the most challenging phil-
osophical issues ofWestem science.
These struggles are at the center of Tfoc
F^ctlitics erf JPeiin iV£ediCf re. Through extensive in-
terviews and textual analyses, S. Scott Graham
chronicles the work of pain management spe-
cialists as they form a rxevsr science of pain and
a new^ approach to pain medicine grounded
in a more comprehensive biopsychosocial
imodeL From this he draws ont a detailed ex-
ploration of the changing rhetoric surround-
ing pain medicine and how this rhetoric
ultimately shapes the health-care communi-
ty s understanding of what pain is,
how the medicine should he practiced and
regulated, and how practitioner-patient rela-
tionships are best managed-
Graham incorporates work from a diverse
range of disciplines, including science and
technology studies, rhetorical studies, medical
humanities, and critical / cxiltnral theory. In so
doing, he offers a novel interdisciplinary ap-
proach to the study of science and medicine.
By combining traditional rhetorical theory
wth multiple ontologies theory:, he creates a
new way for scholars to conduct their own in-
quiries into health care_
of the body. /V new held of pain medicine has
