OF A NEW CHINA
1945-1966
IN THE EARLY DAYS OF THE PEOPLE S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, THE
CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY WENT TO GREAT LENGTHS TO PUBLISH
BOOKS ABOUT ITS ACHIEVEMENTS, IN PARTICULAR FOR THE TENTH
ANNIVERSARY OF THE PRC IN 1959. IN CONTRAST TO THE BOOKS
PUBLISHED TEN YEARS PRIOR, WHEN RESOURCES WERE SCARCE AND
THE PARTY HAD YET TO EVOLVE INTO COMMITTEE-DRIVEN BUREAU-
CRACIES, THESE BOOKS ARE REMARKABLE FOR THEIR QUALITY AND
SOPHISTICATED APPROACH TO PROPAGANDISTIC PUBLISHING.
THIS CHAPTER ALSO TRACES THE EARLY STAGES OF THE DEVELOPING
IMAGE CULT OF THE GREAT LEADER, MAO ZEDONG.

THE YEAR 1966 MARKS THE START OF THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION,
A TIME WHEN GUIDELINES AS TO WHAT COULD AND COULD NOT BE
PUBLISHED BECAME MORE RIGOROUSLY ENFORCED*FROM THE
SIMPLEST OF BOOKS ABOUT PUBLIC HEALTH, TO THOSE EXALTING
THE VARIOUS POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS AND NEW POLICIES BEING
LAUNCHED. THE NATURE OF PURELY PROPAGANDISTIC BOOKS ALSO
SHIFTED, AS MAO BECAME INCREASINGLY CONCERNED ABOUT
THE CONTROL OF HIS IMAGE*AND THAT OF HIS EVER-SHIFTING
POLITICAL CIRCLE. A SELECTION OF THESE BOOKS SHOWS BOTH
OFFICIAL AND SELF-CENSORSHIP OF IMAGES OF ALLEGED DISSIDENTS
SUCH AS LIN BIAO, PHOTOGRAPHS OF WHOM WERE LITERALLY
TORN OR CUT OUT OF BOOKS AFTER HIS DOWNFALL AND DEATH.

CHINA AND A CRUCIAL MEANS OF COMMUNICATING THE OFFICIAL
