SUMMARY
The fundamentals of the scientific school of Mongolian studies
in Russia were laid in the 18th — 19th centuries. At that time, Rus-
sian Mongolistics occupied a leading position in the world.
The second half of the 19th century was the heyday of Mon-
golian studies in Russia. In world science names of such research-
ers of Mongolia as N. M. Przewalsky, G. E. Groom-Grjimailo,
G.N. Potanin, M.V Pevtsov, A.M. Pozdneev, RK. Kozlov,
B.Ja. Vladimirtsov, VA. Obruchev are well-known. Many of
them visited Mongolia on more than one occasion, and then
published books and articles in which they described the coun-
try. Those scholars’ contribution to Russian and world Mongol-
istics was acknowledged by the scientific community long ago.
They were the ones who, in the 19th century, laid the foundation
of systematical studies of Mongolia. The materials those scholars
collected during their expeditions are still a valuable source for
learning the political and socio-economic situation in Mongolia,
its culture and in a broad sense — Mongolian civilization in the
second half of the 19th — early 20th century.
Along with the forenamed well-known explorers of Mongo-
lia there was a group of researchers of this country, who stayed
in the background of their famous colleagues. Those were the
officers of the General Staff of Russia, who made an invaluable
contribution to the general study of Mongolia as well. The Mon-
golian line of research was one of the main topics in the complex
of researches carried out by Russian army men in the countries
adjacent to Russia.
In the second half of the 19th century Russian policy in Asia
became more active. Since then, the study of the region was con-
ducted primarily under the auspices of the War Ministry of the

Russian Empire, or with its support. Military reconnaissance
expeditions led by officers such as A.M. Baranov, A. A. Batorskyi,
E.L Bernov, I.V Dorofeev, I.A. Evtyugin, Konshin, VF. Now-
itskyi, P.D. Orlov, V.L. Popov, D.Y Putyata, LI. Strelbitskyi,
I.V Tonkih and others were sent to Mongolia. The functions of
those expeditions were quite specific, namely intelligence gath-
ering of geographical, military and statistical information on cer-
tain areas of Mongolia.
By the middle of the 19th century, the vast territory of Mongo-
lia had been little-investigated (except caravan routes), and there-
fore the data obtained by each reconnaissance expedition in dif-
ferent regions of the country became a contribution to the devel-
opment of Mongolia's geography as well as of the cartography of
Central Asia. Thanks to the researches of Russian geographers,
including military officers, in Central Asia, geographical science
in the 19th century gained further development worldwide.
For the general public, the results of their visits to Mongo-
lia a large number of military explorers presented in the form of
reports on their stay and research work in that country were not
available for a long time. They were marked as “Not for publica-
tion” or “Confidential Information” and therefore only in-crowd
officials could use them since the materials were mostly mili-
tary-analytical. Such restrictions related to the reconnaissance
character of the expeditions.
The military researchers systematized the information on
Mongolia, which was important not only for the formation of
Russia's foreign policy in the Far East in general, but in particu-
lar in regard to Mongolia. They managed to gather extensive data
and unique research materials on the history, economy and eth-
nography of Mongolia.
Thanks to the scientific and practical activity of the military
researchers such a branch of Oriental studies as Military Mon-
golistics was formed in Russia. It became a part of national Mon-
golian studies, which was one of the most developed and widely

known in the world in the second half of the 19th — early 20th
century The experience of military Mongolistics in pre-revolu-
tionary Russia is completely unique, as no other country con-
ducted such researches in Mongolia.
Along with their contribution to the formation of Mongolian
studies in Russia, military investigators of Mongolia contributed
to the development of trade and economic, political, diplomatic
and cultural relations between Russia and Mongolia.
