Rousse. Space and History (late 14th century-the 70s of the 19th century). Urban Develop-
ment. Infrastructure. Sites.

Abstract
The monograph covers an important period of the history of Rousse - one of the
biggest and most significant cities within the Bulgarian territories in the Ottoman Empire.
On the basis of summarized information collected from the existing written sources (Otto-
man documents, memories, military reports, publications in the press in the Revival period
and after the Liberation, deeds of the City Hall etc.), from pictures, etchings, photographs
and through other research work, all sites of the urban infrastructure for which there is
information are listed in chronological order and the changes in the urban and architectural
appearance of the city from the late 14th century till the 70s of the 19th century (that is little
known to the public) are outlined. Because of their diverse nature, they are split in several
sections.
A brief historic review outlines the landmarks of that period: political events,
military conflicts, demographic changes, major phases of the social and economic devel-
opment of Rousse et cetera that affected the general appearance of the city.
The sequence, the trends and the rate of covering the urban territory, of the
development and the structure of the city neighborhoods are described. The changes of
their ethnic and religious traits, boundaries and names are followed to reveal the phases of
the urban territorial alterations. The typical features of the architecture and the utilities of
Rousse and their specific components are recreated: one central and several minor city
zones, squares, streets, city profile, buildings, construction technologies and so on. The
role of some major urban constituents is highlighted: mosques and other important public
constructions, landscape features, street network, etc. A big number of streets, public places
and homes of prominent people from Rousse are localized. The changes of the urban
appearance after Rousse was made the seat of the Danube Province (Tuna Vilaet) are
described. The most important public utility activities, the efforts to organize a water supply
system, the significance of some sanitation measures and others of the kind are also dis-
cussed.
The role of the fort of Rousse concerning military strategic and tactical opera-
tions is clarified, and its functions and structure in the course of the two major phases of its
existence are outlined: as a small stone fort in phase one that lasted till the second half of
the 18m century, and as an urban territory protected by a bank and a moat and outside
fortifications in phase two. There is a detailed description of the fort elements and the major
fortification facilities from the second half of the 19th century when it was a key unit of the
fortified rectangle formed by Shumen, Varna, Silistra and Rousse and reached the peak of
its defense capabilities.
The changes of the administrative role of Rousse are traced in the monograph,
along with all related structures of the county, district and city government, the courts,
prisons and so on. Much space is provided for road, mail and telegraph stations and for the
customs and the passport office that are typical for a border city. All foreign diplomatic
offices, the communities of the different ethnic groups and so on are also presented.
The components of the business life of the city are pointed out and on that basis

the main areas of trade, crafts and industry and the transport sites and facilities are localized
and described. There is a special focus on activities that are traditional for Rousse: ship
building, sailing and port operations, railway transport, emerging industry, etc.
A big part of the monograph is concentrated on religious temples and sites that
existed all over the territory and played a special role in the life of the different ethnic and
religious communities. Attention is paid to the development of the conditions for religious
activities that used to exist in the Ottoman Empire and their impact on the construction of
temples. All temples of the religions that existed in the city are listed: mosques and masjids,
orthodox, catholic and Armenian churches, synagogues, tekkes, cloisters, necropolises
and so on. The complex approach in describing such places gives- for the first time - a
comprehensive picture of the religious structures in Rousse in the Ottoman period.
The stages of the development of the facilities of the schools and the cultural
institutions of the different ethnic and religious communities are described in detail. Special
emphasis is laid on health establishments, pharmacies, drug stores and also on places
related with various social activities, recreation places and other of this kind that have not
been widely known so far.
The monograph contains numerous etchings and photographs, old plans and
sketches on the location of the different sites.
