From Traditional to Modern Society, Demography and Health in Major Urban Centres in Western Pomerania [Prussian Province of Pomerania] in the Era of Accelerated Urbanisation and Industrialisation in Germany (1871-1913)
The turn of the twentieth century was a time of great social and economic change in Germany, This country turned from an agrarian into industrial state, which was accompanied by an urban population explosion and then by a demographic implosion. This is also when the demographic system changed radically, which most of all meant a transition from the so-called wasteful reproduction to economical reproduction. The basic, general aim of this book is to present this very important period of social modernisation as well as its relationship with the progressive industrialisation and urbanisation in Western Pomerania’s major urban centres, which had different functions (Greifswald, Stralsund, Szczecin [DE: Stettin], Stargard Szczecinski [DE: Stargard in Pommern], Kotobrzeg [DE: Kolberg], Kos-zalin [DE: Köslin], and Slupsk [DE: Stolp]), in an interdisciplinary (social demography as well as elements of social history, sociology, population geography and statistics) and comparative way. It is the author’s intention that this book should fill in the gap in the research related to the demography of middle-sized towns in the era of great modernisation changes by presenting the subject of study comprehensively and from different perspectives.
This monograph consists of two main parts. The first one provides a background to the topic by presenting the spatial and demographic relations in Western Pomerania’s major urban centres in the context of all towns located in this region, the number of which ranged from 76 to 84 based on two criteria, i.e. demographic as well as legal and administrative one. The second part deals with the topic itself, i.e. presents reflections on the demographic processes and population structures of major urban centres in their own contexts. The monumental Statistics of Prussia (Preußische Statistik), Lexicons of Communes (Gemeindelexikone) and the Publications of German Empire s Health Office (Veröffentlichungen des Kaiserlichen Gesundheitsamts) as well as reports drawn up by towns’ executive councils and health authorities provided the basic source material for this monograph. In order to explain the qualitative aspects of demographic processes archival materials were used, i.e. primarily the reports prepared by the health committee and regional physicians that are kept in Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin-Dahlem, Landesarchiv Greifswald, Stadtarchiv Greifswald, Stadtarchiv Stralsund, State Archives in Szczecin, and State Archives in Koszalin as well as its branch in Slupsk.
In order to describe and analyse demographic processes and population structures the principle of individual comparisons was applied and particular methods of multivariate analysis (models), data aggregation (eliminating random fluctuations) as well as a GIS (presenting spatial data) were used. For cross-sectional demographic analysis (there was no data for longitudinal analysis) mainly structural demographic indicators and crude demographic rates were used, whereas standardised demographic rates (e g. Coale’s Indices) and life tables (Chiang’s method) were used less frequently because of the limitations of the sources.

Summary
At the turn of the twentieth century the population of Western Pomerania s major urban centres participated in broadly defined modernisation changes which are mainly analysed through the prism of demographic transformation. Although these processes did not progress uniformly in all of the studied towns, the direction of changes taking place at the beginning of the twentieth century was generally the same regardless of a given town’s level of Industrial and urban development. Therefore, this fact draws one’s attention to the very important role that the cultural factor, i.e. religious and ethnic homogeneity, played in this development. Before the outbreak of World War I both the population of provincial, administrative Koszalin, where mainly crafts were practiced, and of highly urbanised Szczecin was characterised by lower fertility as well as mortality rates and a higher incidence of deaths that were mainly due to degenerative diseases as well as diseases of civilisation and, less frequently, to infective and enterogastric, i.e. air- and waterborne diseases. The latter occurred less often due to positive changes in nutrition, infrastructure as well as social awareness and legislation that were taking place at that time, for example, as a result of the activities undertaken by municipal authorities and either bottom-up social initiatives or those that were inspired or controlled by a competent ministry.
Observations of spatial and demographic characteristics over time were facilitated by the fact that the administrative boundaries of the studied settlement units were stable and that there was an appropriate amount of undeveloped space, which is why the described relations and events were concerned with a given concentration of population (an urban centre). It was only in Szczecin, which was much more urbanised than all the other towns in this region, that the adjustments to the town’s boundaries that had been caused by the development of the agglomeration made themselves known. However, fortunately, these adjustments were made at a crucial point in the process of change in the demographic system, which is why their disturbing influence could be somewhat controlled for. What is more, the extension of administrative boundaries of Western Pomerania’s capital with the addition of suburbs where the working class lived allowed one to pose many questions about the role of industrialisation in the process of demographic transformation. Undoubtedly, it was the development of industry and then, afso, of tourism, that was the principal driving force behind the dynamic changes in the population of towns (rural areas experienced stagnation or even regression after the process of abolishing serfdom and granting ownership rights to the peasantry had finished as well as after the quiet agrarian revolution) which were mostly visible in Szczecin’s urban complex.
Szczecin was developing due to the influx of migrants and a high fertility rate among migrants coming from rural areas and from small towns, which probably also obscured the modernising trends developing in the group of indigenous population of this town, which is situated on the Oder River, and at the same time sharpened the contrast between burgesses and the working class to such an extent that, although positive changes were taking place in the area of morbidity and epidemiology, there still existed two different demographic systems within one highly urbanised organism. These systems mainly differed in terms of the infant mortality rate and, to a lesser extent, in terms of the size of family households which changed only little in the era of the transformations in questions (homeostasis). This change resulted from the decreasing number of households’ members who were unrelated to the head of a given household in blood or in law, which was also one of the elements of social modernisation.
“Between the East and the West’’ was a popular phrase which was used to describe the area located along the border between civilisations where different cultures merged and which was also exemplified by the development of the relations as well as events connected with population in major urban centres that were situated on the edge of the analysed historical region, i.e. Slupsk and Stralsund, at a distance of several hundreds of kilometres from each other and which had somewhat different demographic systems. In Slupsk population processes occurred rapidly although, as for directional changes, these came nowhere close to being as dynamic as those taking place in Szczecin and its urban complex that linked taxonomically similar settlement units. In Stralsund, however, population processes were stagnant; it was an aging town with a low birth rate and a large proportion of people who were definitely celibate or ran one-person households. Slupsk stood out In that it was a young and fertile town with a high birth rate and a large proportion of deaths by natural causes, i.e. without a precisely diagnosed cause. This was accompanied by considerable variations in mortality rates until the beginning of the twentieth century with a peak in the years 1884-1885, which was a certain hallmark of traditional society apart from a relatively low infant mortality rate (sic) that was due to the fact that newborns were, more frequently and for a longer period of time, fed in a natural way, which was becoming less common in industrialising Szczecin, thus leading to mass deaths of infants who had most probably been born to persons looking for their chance in life in this town in the era of its economic boom and urban development. The reduction of the high infant mortality rate was the key to important changes. It not only led to the improvement of life expectancy,

which grew continuously also after World War I, but also to a decline in the number of births, for example, in response to this appeal: “do not let them die any more”. Before the outbreak of World War I the birth rate decreased in all of the major urban centres, which was a clear harbinger of an advanced stage of demographic transition and therefore of the completion of a subsequent phase of modernisation.
