| adam_text | In The Adaptable Jesus of the Fourth Gospel, Jason S. Sturdevant
argues that the Gospel of John portrays Jesus as an adaptable
teacher, who accommodates to different people in various
ways to a singular end: to bring each to faith and understand-
ing. This is particularly on display in Jesus interactions with
the various paired figures in the Gospel. This adaptability is
not only personal, but also universal, since the Gospel similar-
ly characterizes the incarnation as the accommodation of the
Logos to humanity, whose descent enables humans to have
access to God.
This study draws upon early Christian interpretations of John,
especially that of John Chrysostom, which describe the Jesus
of John as evoking images of the ideal Greco-Roman peda-
gogue, adapting to his diverse students. It also looks to evi-
dence from authors discussing adaptability closer to the time
of the Fourth Evangelist. In so doing, Jason S. Sturdevant pro-
vides a new lens through which to understand the characteri-
zation of the Johannine Jesus, and his interactions with the
several characters of the Fourth Gospel.
