The publication accompanying the exhibition Polish Peoples Re-
public Lives On In Us?: The Culture of Leisure provides a com-
mentary on the show. And the show is a story about something
that really happened. It is an attempt to look at that period from
the angle of everyday life and ways of spending free time. The
first part of the title invites a reflection on the question to what
extent the communist era is still going strong, in how far it is a
vital component of Polish mentality. The question mark plays
an important role, as it introduces a note of unobviousness. It
invites looking closer at oneself, doing a peculiar self-analysis.
The second part of the title, on the other hand, refers directly to
the issue presented in the exhibition, that is the culture of free
time. We will see how free time in the Polish People s Republic
was spent; how important, interesting and necessary it was, even
though it was often subject to the dictates of the official doctrine.
This last point will also be addressed in the exhibition.
The exhibition has been divided into five narrative spaces re-
lated to the ways and options of spending free time. The first
one is backyard. The other ones are allotment, cinema, commu-
nity centre and coffee bar club ֊ cultural centre and the popular
Empik, the International Book and Press Club. The last one will
be presented as closely linked to Nowa Huta and a witness, no
longer existent, to the history of the place and the budding iden-
tity of its inhabitants. We will see how people used to spend their
free time there, how the issue evolved over the years and what
the present reality looks like.
Each of these spaces constitutes a separate story. Taken together,
they make a polyphonic narrative about the approach to free time,
man and popular culture in Poland under the communist regime.
The narrative is accompanied by a reflection on the changes that
took place during the political transformation and in contem-
porary times. Many of the places presented in the exhibition no
longer exist. We will see their end and, as in some cases, their
second life. The popular ways of spending free time in the Polish
People s Republic have been replaced with the new ones that
move with the times and follow the fashion.
The main characters of our journey in time are Nowa Huta and
Krakow. The narrative further develops to encompass Southern
Poland - big cities and urban agglomerations as well as small
towns, villages and hamlets. Here, time flows in a different way.
It concerns everyday life. It is set apart from sudden hot polit-
ical and social affairs. The 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s are seen not
as separate decades, but as a process reflecting certain changes
in fashion, mentality, customs and culture. A major change can
only be seen at the point of decline of the Polish People s Repub-
lic and the beginning of political, economic and social changes
brought by 1990s. The exhibition also includes some reflection
on the present day.
