adam_text | The final considerations
he Serbian Orthodox Monastery of the Holy Archangels Michael and
Gabriel in the village of Kovilj, nearby Novi Sad, is a male coenobit-
ic monastery. As one of two oldest Serbian Orthodox monasteries in
Bačka, for centuries the Kovilj monastery has represented spiritual
turai centre for Serbs in this part of Vojvodina. At first, after its founda-
tion in the 16th century, the Eparchy of Bačka was based in Szeged, later on the
centre was relocated to the Monasteries of Kovilj and Bodani, and finally at the
beginning of the 18 th century, it was permanently established in Petrovaradinski
Sanac. During the 19th century the Kovilj monastery served as the summer resi-
dency of the Bishop of Bačka.
The monastery complex consists of the temple dedicated to the Holy Arch-
angels Michael and Gabriel, in the central location in the churchyard, and anoth-
er building of sacral and profane purpose in the orderly arrangement surrounding
the temple which is symbolically the centre of the complex. The residential quar-
ters make the south border of the monastery. In the east side there is the winter
chapel dedicated to the Holy fathers of Athon. Farther to the south-east there is
a monastic cemetery. The old economy buildings are located in the north side of
the monastery complex and new ones in the east side, while north-west from the
temple there is a reception building with a tall bell-tower. South-east, outside the
monastery fence, there is a chapel dedicated to Saint Petka dating from the 13the
century.
During the long history of the monastery, the monks survived many diffi-
culties, fires, hardships and poverty. Because of its significant strategic location
in the south part of Bačka, between the Rivers Tisa and Danube, in the period
16th-18 th century on several occasions it was in the centre of war devastations,
and as a result suffered economically and materialistically. Patient monks of the
Kovilj monastery diligently restored the holy place. At the close of the 19 th cen-
tury and at the beginning of the 20th century, monastery was very rich. There
was a large estate with developed agricultural production. Until the mid 19th
century, the land was cultivated by the citizens of the nearby village of Prnjavor

which was built on the monastery land. Later on those works were done by the
hired men or the land was rented. Catde breeding, bee-keeping, fishing and even
snail breeding were developed at that time. The monastery leaders managed
monastery successfully especially at the beginning of the 20th century. Alter the
end of the World Wars I and II several agrarian reforms were carried out and
large estates were confiscated which in the long run had significant consequenc-
es and impact on the life of the monastery. When during the first half of the
20th century the number of monks suddenly decreased, the Kovilj monastery
gradually started to close down. The turning point in its history was when it was
transformed into a female monastery in 1933. The monks were relocated to oth-
er monasteries throughout Vojvodina and Serbia, and the Kovilj monastery was
inhabited by the sisterhood. During the World War II the sisterhood was settled
elsewhere and monks who used to live there returned to the monastery. In 1955
once again the Kovilj monastery became male monastery. However, because of
the hardships during postwar years and life in a socialist country, few monks did
not manage to preserve life in the monastery.
Generations of young people were educated in the monastic school during
the 17th and 18th centuries, and a few were supported by the monastery leaders
to pursue further education. Several prominent Serbian figures entered monastic
life in this monastery. Among the most famous novices were Jovan Rajic, a histo-
rian and archimandrite of Kovilj, and Georgije Brankovic, the Serbian Patriarch.
The temple of the Kovilj monastery was built between 1741 and 1749. The
builders, Teodor Kosta and Nikola Krapic from Epir, were inspired by the church
in Manasija monastery. The temple represents a combination of three-nave basil-
ica and trikonhos, with three part altar space, little dome above it and two domes
on tall tambours above the chant stand transept and narthex. The entire inte-
rior of the church with the original iconostasis and furnishings were destroyed
in 1849 when the whole monastery complex was burnt. We do not know who
painted the original iconostasis of the Kovilj monastery.
During the mid 19th century reconstruction of the monastery, ancient
church in the churchyard was pulled down and the rest of the building were re-
stored. We learn about the architecture and the interior of the old church from
the inventory books and descriptions.
Wood carving decoration of the sacral space in the Kovilj monastery was
made by a Vienna wood-carver Jochan Kistinger between 1866 and 1869. He
lived in Novi Sad during the second part of the 19th century. Lavish Neo-Renais-
sance painting of the iconostasis in the Kovilj monastery was painted by Aksenti-
je Marodic, educated at the Vienna Art Academy between 1870 and 1890. These
paintings were painted in the fashion of religious paintings of the time in Eu-
rope. Bearing in mind the art of the High Renaissance, Marodic in the religious

compositions at the Kovilj iconostasis, apart from the historical and emotional
truthfulness, creates idealistic realism, which is the characteristic of the religious
paintings of the 20th century. In the sacral space of the temple prominent figures
of the monastery history were buried. Memorial plates on the graves of archi-
mandrite of Kovilj and historian Jovan Rajic and major-general Teodor Stanisav-
ljevic served as a permanent reminder of their importance.
The treasury of the Kovilj monastery, once rich with numerous precious
icons, objects and clothing items, suffered a lot of damages. Nevertheless, the
monastery still has a small but very significant collection of icons, liturgical items,
clothing items and other valuables. In the mid 20th century, eleven items of ap-
plied art from the monastery treasury was placed under the state protection.
The walls of the dining room and representative salons in the residential
quarters are decorated by a gallery of portraits of the monastery dignitaries and
hegumens, bishops and metropolitans. Emphasizing religious ancestors was
a moral inspiration for the following generations and had memorial function.
Such a portrait gallery of the church members and representatives was common
in reception rooms in bishops’ and metropolitans’ residencies, and the presence
of them indicated continuity, reputation and stability of the church organization.
In the residential quarters there is a collection of paintings painted by a
monk of the Kovilj monastery, who later become archimandrite of Sišatovac, Ra-
fail Momčilovic. As a young boy he came to the monastery, and the first painting
classes got from Aksentije Marodic. Then he studied art at the art school of Kirilo
Kutlik in Belgrade with the support of the Kovilj heguman Miron Dordevic who
recognized his painting talent and helped him in his further development.
A large and valuable monastery library is located in the representative rooms
and hallways of the residential quarters. It reached impressive number of books
and today it has around 2000 books of mainly liturgical books and books of the-
ology, history and philosophy. Majority of books come from personal libraries of
the monks of the Kovilj monastery which they donated to the monastery.
The monastic community of the Kovilj monastery was restored at the initi-
ative of His Excellence the Bishop of Bačka doctor Irinej during the last decade of
the 20th century. Soon massive construction works were undertaken, buildings
were renovated and a number of new buildings were built within the monas-
tery complex. Modern agricultural methods were introduced and the monastery
economy was renewed, and the products produced in the monastery are sold at
the market. Income made in this way helps support the group of young people
who are successfully recovering from addictions with the assistance and care of
monks. Apart from restoring monastery buildings and production, the broth-
erhood of the Kovilj monastery and the Bishop Jegarski doctor Porfirije with a
great success restore the spiritual live of the Orthodox people in Serbia.
