Treatment of wounds in the Warsaw
Uprising from August 1 to October 2,
1944
The First World War brought about many changes to treating wartime
wounds. The research of German and French scientists led to the conclu-
sion that all those wounds were infected. The works of French research-
ers Henri Gaudier and Fernand Lemaitre on wound excision and primary
suture aroused a great interest in medical world. During the interwar pe-
riod in Poland, Dr. Tadeusz Sokołowski introduced the method of excis-
ing wounds. He claimed that French doctors working in lazarets during
the Polish-Russian war applied that method.
Preparations for the uprising were carried out throughout the occupa-
tion. There were medical units in the Home Army structures which were
responsible for training medical and nursing staff but also for providing
medicines, dressings and all medical equipment.
Treatment of wounds during the Warsaw Uprising was based on a
three-stage procedure: first aid, transporting to a dressing station, and to
hospital if wounds were serious. Nurses gave first aid immediately on
the front line. They put a provisional dressing, sometimes gave painkill-
ers. When it was necessary, they immobilized patients, and when it was
impossible, they applied a tourniquet and sent them to their billets or to
a hospital.
The biggest group of the wounded consisted of those with gunshot
wounds to upper and lower limbs. All the injuries of soft tissues were
treated in a classical way. A patient could undergo surgery only when a
shock had been controlled. Such a surgery was often carried out without
any anaesthetics, or by giving morphine or local anaesthesia. In more
serious cases ethyl chloride or even ether was administered. The wound
was treated by excising its edges and cavities, removing foreign bodies
including shrapnel. Then the bleeding vessels were treated, and a sterile

dressing was put. Usually, the anti-tetanus serum was injected although
it was not always recorded in the documents. In case of pain, morphine
or dolantin was used, if they were available. Some cases were recorded
when plaster cast was put on gunshot wounds. It had an impact not only
on healing, protecting against pain and infection but also safeguarding in
case of potential evacuation. When an arm was wounded, the limb was
immobilized in splints, and in cast after it got healed.
There were 25 hospitals, 122 small hospitals and 200 dressing sta-
tions during the uprising in Warsaw. The number of wounded civilians
was much higher than the wounded soldiers, and often reached 70% of
a total number. Qualified staff, including doctors and nurses, provided
medical care for the wounded and sick.
Despite difficult conditions, the medical staff treated war injuries ac-
cording to the pre-war procedures. Available documents confirm effec-
tiveness of such treatment. However, the wounds of an abdominal cav-
ity posed the most serious problems. The damage of peritoneum usually
resulted in patient’s death. Generally, during 63 days of fight, no new
method of treatment was developed. However, it was confirmed that ap-
plying sulphonamide and antiseptic preparations, as well as immobiliz-
ing limbs with gunshot wounds were effective.
