The Cartography of Chinese Syntax is the first attempt to carry out a comprehensive
study of Chinese grammar under the cartographic approach, it offers insights into the
architecture of Chinese grammar from a comparative point of view, and dearly maps
out the alignment between syntax and semantics under die cartographic/minimalist
guideline laid out by Gugiielmo Cinque and Luigi Rizzi.
The volume s seven chapters focus on three core areas. The first three chapters study
the way information structure is encoded and represented in the peripheral areas
of syntactic phases, i.e., CP and vP. By doing so, the typological status of the Chinese
language (Mandarin and Cantonese in particular) is also updated in terms of syntactic
cartography. The next two chapters focus on the topography of wh-in-situ constructions
in Chinese. Based on intervention effects and the placement of certain sentential
adverbials, objective tests are carried out with a view to articulate the licensing conditions
for such arrangements. The last two chapters venture into the domain of (anti-)logophoric
and locative expressions, giving a comprehensive picture of how various functional
elements are organized in Chinese. These findings lend substantial support to die idea of
a universal hierarchy of functional projections, and thereby make important contributions
to the generative enterprise as pvt of the inquiry into human language and mind.
