The Cambridge Descartes Lexicon is the definitive reference source devoted
to René Descartes, “the father of modern philosophy” and among the
most important philosophers of all time. Examining the full range of
Descartes’ achievements and legacy, it includes 256 in-depth entries that
explain key concepts relating to his thought. Cumulatively they uncover
interpretative disputes, trace his influences, and explain how his work
was received by critics and developed by followers.
Key Features
y Scholarly entries: Unlike most dictionaries, this work consists of
substantive entries that inform readers of the various interpretative
debates relating to Descartes’ thought.
• Contributors: The entries are written by a distinguished team of 92
.scholars from ten countries, the largest ever assembled for a collaborative
research project on Descartes.
• Biography and annotated bibliography: The detailed biography will give
readers a broad sense of Descartes’ ambitions, character, and motivations
and discuss the challenges that he faced. It includes an annotated
bibliography for those interested in further investigating Descartes’ life.
• Bibliographies: Each entry includes a short list of references to help
facilitate further research.
• Cross-references: All entries have been meticulously cross-referenced.
The first time an entry is mentioned within the body of another, it is
highlighted in bold. There is also a select list of the most important cross-
references at the end of each entry.
