Prepositional Object Constructions
(English Summary)
This book is the result of my doctoral research, defended at the
University of Bucharest, Faculty of Letters. It consists of two major parts:
the first part is a theoretical description of the preposition and
prepositional phrase, with focus on the structure of prepositional phrases
inside the verb phrase. The second part is a list of prepositional verbs in
Romanian. Note though that prepositional verbs in Romanian do not share
the same behaviour with the prepositional/phrasal verbs in English, and
no separate lexical entries are obtained. Even though there are syntactic
dictionaries available for Romanian, this list is the first of this type, since
each prepositional verbs is followed by its translation in English and in
French, plus sentences to illustrate each situation.
After the Introduction, this first part contains seven chapters,
obviously ending with the Conclusions. In the first chapter (Prepositions
in Romanian linguistics), I present a diachronic viewpoint on the
interpretation given to prepositions, focusing on such descriptions as
found in lexicography (DA/DLR, DEX) and academic grammars (Cipariu
1869,1877, GA 1954, 1963), bringing also evidence from works written by
individual authors. All these are in favour of showing the heterogeneity of
prepositions.
The second chapter (Prepositional object or adverbial?) deals with
a subcategorisation issue: I take a special look at certain prepositional
phrases inside the VP and discuss their status as either an argument or an
adjunct, especially as shown in the large class of movement verbs. The
conclusion of this chapter is that, in certain cases, the boundary between
obligatory and optional constituent is very fragile, hence the numerous
interpretations for one and the same linguistic phenomenon.
In the third chapter (Syntactic and syntactic-semantic
determination in the analysis of prepositional objects), I make further
notes on the prepositional object function, showing the syntactic and the
syntactic-semantic criteria involved in describing it. I also discuss here the
syntactic hierarchy (and the place of a prepositional object in such

hierarchy), as well as the behaviour of the prepositional group when it
contains a relative element.
The fourth chapter (For a class of semilexical prepositions) starts
from the distinction functional vs. lexical prepositions. Following Corver
van Riemsdijk (2001), I propose the existence of a semilexical category.
Further on, I adopt Gorrie (20o8)’s PP-split analysis. The fifth chapter
(Prepositional objects and movement verbs) deals with from various
interpretations from both localist and nonlocalist theories. It also focuses
on the relation between movement verbs and the grammaticalisation
process.
The sixth chapter (Comitative constructions in Romanian)
approaches a series of constructions that are problematic as far as their
inclusion is concerned. Thus, it can belong either to the noun phrase, or
the verb phrase. Apart from some clear situations, the Comitative puts
some verb-agreement problems and it also shows that the participant in an
action may be expressed in various ways. I have also included in this
chapter some statistical data.
The last chapter of the first part (Patterns of prepositional verbs)
explain the types of verbs to be found in the second part of this book,
presenting the criteria in use, but also issues related to syntax and
syntax-semantics and possible theta-roles for the prepositional
constructions in question. The conclusions of the first part stress the main
points of the paper and also the practical side of the second part.
The second part of this book is entirely my contributions. It consists
of a large list of verbs excerpted from DEX. Before listing the verbs, I
describe the organisation of this lexicon, making it thus easier for the
reader to go through my paper. To the best of my knowledge, it is the first
lexicon of this kind. This second part I consider to be of great help
especially for foreign students. |
