The book contains scientific studies, occasional essays, request-
ed opinions, and speeches at patriotic gatherings, statements about
specific issues or historic events, diverse in nature yet unified by an
overarching concept, i.e. Yugoslavia - a Great Fatherland and a Good
Homeland (in Serbian: Jugoslavija velika Otadžbina i dobra Domovina.
Even though both terms are equally used in Serbian to denote the love
of one’s country or nation, Otadžbina and Domovina are sometimes
felt, in patriotic contexts, to be stylistically marked - the former as pre-
ferred by the Serbs and the latter by the Croats, translator’s note).
Taken as a whole, the contributions in the book contain plenty
of repetitions of what was written or said about the subject-matters
of specific scientific studies or speeches. This is a result of an ongoing
reflection about the reality. This repetition appears to be more useful
than inappropriate; repetition is a way of learning and an important
tool for acquiring and safeguarding the knowledge about human ac-
tions and developments in humanity.
The author’s numerous opinions, contained in these writings,
are different from some previous historical opinions and are likely
to be different from those future ones. This is because the collapse of
the Yugoslav state has decimated the love of truth; overcoming this
mishap must be science’s mandatory aim and an ethical tenet.
An approach was taken in compiling the book Yugoslavia on
Europe’s Cliff that whatever the author had written or said on a parti-
cular topic should remain unchanged so as to preserve the true expre-
ssion of his opinions and proposals. The writings use the script and
dialect, ekavian or iyekavian, in which they were originally created.
Each of the titles and content of these writings are explained in
addendum, as is scientifically appropriate; here, however, this is also
required in order to explain the reasons and purposes of the studies,

essays, opinions and speeches as they were produced in different pe-
riods of time.
Each of the writings in the book has a title that reflects the su-
bject-matter of the paper or speech that were made over a period of
almost twenty years.
Some were written in response to public controversies that appe-
ared in published debates about Yugoslavia’s past and subsequent
serious difficulties that Yugoslavia later encountered. The questions
about man and society, state and rule permeate the writings. The aim
is thereby to clarify the differences, which is of paramount impor-
tance, to approach the truth boldly in a scientific manner and clothe
the studied reality into it.
In any writing, the author goes through the ordeal of staying true
to the truth; and as the truth is surrounded by a multitude of possible
approaches, a keen truth-seeker will arrive at it through a sense of
purpose and work, on a road chosen by himself and lonely travelled.
Truth prevails: Scientia nihil aliud estquam veriatis imago (Sci-
ence is but an image of the truth); two wings help it prevail, insepa-
rably - accuracy and patriotism knowledge and emotion, proof and
validity. The truth should be told with mellifluous words as well as
having in mind ethical considerations so that the one involved may
not be degraded by what was truthfully revealed or stated; man is al-
ways at the forefront ֊ sometimes as a magnificent creator, but some-
times even as an abused martyr. (Famous writer Stefan Zweig in his
book The World of Yesterday reiterates: Intellectual work means the
purest luck, personal freedom, the most sublime good in this world;

НА КРУТОМ СКЛОНЕ ЕВРОПЫ
Книга содержит научные исследования, очерки и эссе, вы-
ступления на патриотических собраниях, множественные суж-
дения об отдельных эпизодах и исторических событиях, но все
это объединено господствующим понятием: Югославия как ве-
ликое Отечество (для сербов) и хорошая Родина (для хорватов).
По большому счету, в данной книге имеются многочислен-
ные повторения написанного и сказанного о предметах научно-
го диспута и ораторства. Это является последствием рассматри-
ваемой реальности, похоже, больше полезным чем неуместным;
повторение является видом учения, важной составляющей
приобретения и хранения знаний о происшедших событиях в
истории человечества.
В книге содержится множество рассуждений писателя, от-
личающихся от исторически предшествующих, а наверное и от
последующих, потому что гибель государства Югославия раз-
рушает правдолюбивость, но преодоление данной неприятнос-
ти является научной обязанностью и этическим надзором.
При составлении книги Югославия на крутом склоне
Европы принято решение: все авторское оставить таким как
было написано или высказано, в целях сохранения верного
выражения излагаемых суждений и вносимых предложений.
В тексте сохранена подлинная орфография - экавское или
иекавское наречия.
По заглавиям и содержанию каждого из приложений в
дополнении приведено подобающее для научной обработки
разъяснение; впрочем, здесь это нужно для того, чтобы были
понятны причины и цели неодновременного написания иссле-
дований, очерков, речей.

Каждое приложение в книге имеет заглавие соответствую-
щее предмету данного текста или речи, созданных на протяже-
нии примерно двух десятилетий.
Отдельные тексты созданы как отзывы на объявленные
различия в опубликованных диспутах о прошлом Югославии
и ее последующих трудностях; и всегда это относится к челове-
ку и обществу, государству и управлению. Это важно для того,
чтобы объяснить различия; конечно же, подходя к истине бес-
страшной речью и в научных целях.
Краеугольный камень любой канвы: оратор обязан истине; и
так как истина окружена множеством различных подходов - ос-
мотрительный приходящий благодаря смыслу и труду доберется
до цели по лично избранному и в одиночку пройденному пути.
Господствует истина: „Scientia nihil aliud est quam veritas
imago“ (знание есть отражение истины); два крыла способ-
ствуют ее распространению, всегда неразлучно - точность и
патриотизм, знание и чувства, доказательство и значимость.
И не только красноречивой беседой, но и этическими сообра-
жениями, чтобы открытием и высказыванием, говоря точно,
не унижать участника; человек всегда главенствующий, иногда
он - возвышенный создатель, а иногда даже злоупотребляемый

Вчерашний мир гордо говорит „Интеллектуальный труд озна-
чает чистейшее счастье, личную свободу, высшее добро в этом
