The book entitled „Płocka prasa regionalistyczna w latach
1989-2014 written by Andrzej Kansy focuses on the position of Poland
in the European integration process and deals with the role of
the regions and sub-regions in its development. In this publication
the subject of cultural heritage of the small homelands, their present
and future situation, as well as the local identity and the regionalism
movement is raised. However, the crucial motif of this book is
concerned with the form of activity that derives from the regional
interests, and manifests in the publication of the regional press as the
specific form of the local press. A period of time, which this book deals
with comprises 25 years of so- called „free Poland with the incipient
stage that took place in 1989 as result of the political transformation.
The book consists of five chapters. The first one is concerned with
the presentation of Plock region and sub-region from the administrative
and political point of view, afterwards, the counties which are included
into it are depicted. In the second chapter the author raises an issue
of the contemporary vision of the regionalism as a significant reference
to the regional press. In the third chapter we can find the description
of its developmental process in the background of the heritage of
the past. On the basis of the literature the concept and traditions of
the regional press were inspected. A position in the local press hierarchy
and the classification of the regional press was also presented.
The chapters IV and V concentrate mainly on the research part.
In chapter IV the gist of the regional press and the issue of the regional
traditions in Plock area is included. The analysis and research
conclusive statements concerning the regional press development in
the sub-region of Plock in 1989-2014 are presented. The reason why
regional journals were created is also explained. The authors and editors
who were related to them are characterized as well. Subsequently,
the principles of journals publication are studied, as well as the list
of publishers of the regional press. Additionally, the subject matter
and structures of the particular periodicals are investigated.

It is worth mentioning that they were classified as well.
Periodicals were analyzed on the basis of the regionalism concept
occurrence. The types and forms of the journalism practiced by authors
were also examined. The chapter V is devoted to the description
of semi-annual publication „Nasze Korzenie as the example of
the most unchangeable and constant regional journal. The summation
and the conclusions drawn on the basis of the research are presented.
Additionally, the bibliography, the list of illustrations, graphics,
tables and annexes are provided. The index of authors and the list
of the regional periodicals of Plock sub-region is added. The journals
published in 1989-2014 in Plock sub-region were identified and
characterized. The traditions of the regional press in the sub-region
of Plock date back to the interwar period. At that time, such kind
of press was published in Plock, that functioned both as the capital
of Mazovia Plock and as the main regional journal issue institute,
this institute was also run to a lesser extent in Sierpc. In 1945-1989 Plock
became known both as the regionalism center and the major publishing
institute. Nevertheless, at that time, the concept of regionalism
was mostly treated as a folklorist issue. The major development of the
regional press in the sub-region of Plock followed after 1989. It supports
the argument that the new period in the history of Poland induced to
action and motivated people to give attention to the regional issues,
including the press publication. The political, administrative, economic
and social transformations that took place in Poland also contributed
to the advancement of the regional press. Those changes urged
the regionalism supporters, for example associated with the local
government institutions, government and non-governmental
organization to intense activity. They engaged in a discourse concerned
with the regional cultural heritage in the context of the European Union.
The regional press publishers, editors and other co-workers publicized
and paid considerable attention to the issue of history and nature
of sub-regions, they indicated to the local monuments and to
the prominent figures. The significant impact on the development
of the regionalism and the regional press had the strengthening of the
regionalism movement and implementation education about regions
to schools. However, the most important parts in the whole process of

its evolution were connected with the introduction of the administrative
division, which was based on three levels, creation of three counties:
plocki, gostyninski and sierpecki, and giving Plock the rights of the
district in 1999. Such changes resulted in a meaningful reflection on the
identity elements, which, eventually led to regional press existence.
One of the most important reasons that contributed to this publishing
process was connected with „freedom and possibilities that only scarce
periodicals that raised the subject of small homelands had. The need to
inform about the life and traditions of the local society, supervision
of the local authorities, local community integration, maintenance of the
social relations and support the formation of the cultural identity were
the major factors that contributed to the regional press publication.
The popularization of the knowledge about the small homelands,
emphasizing the importance of the natural and cultural heritage as well
as the encouragement the members of local society to intense activity
pertained to the most important purposes of the regional press in Plock
sub-region. The conducted research lead to the conclusion that the
regional press in the sub-region of Plock played a considerable role
in a period of 25 years of so- called „free Poland . It could be best
perceived from the perspective of the small homelands, for the reason
that they were the object of the special interest of the enthusiasts that
created particular journals. In the atmosphere of the civil liberty the
news about the social life was provided. For the sake of the next
generations and on the grounds of respect, the significance of the
cultural heritage of villages, small towns, communes, counties and
regions was reminded. The issue of cultural identity was also sustained,
which appeared to be extremely important after the gradual retreating
education about regions from schools. The regional press became
the fundamental and the most updated source of information about
the history and culture of the sub-region of Plock, functioning as its
monograph as well. The publishers and the regional editorial offices
have been credited not only with the promotion of the active citizenship
but also with the social relations maintenance, especially that they have
been equally important as the human capital. It must be also said that
the regional press brings benefits and advantages mainly to the local
communities, but, in a broad sense also to the whole Polish society.
