adam_text | kaz za to. Taj grad ima razvijeno osnovno i srednjoškolsko
obrazovanje. U monografiji je slikom i riječju, relativno krat-
ko, prikazan i taj ivanić-gradski dio od prvih početaka do
danas. Na taj se dio nadovezuje prikaz razvoja predškol-
skoga odgoja u Ivanić-Gradu pri čemu važnu ulogu i zadaću
imaju dječji vrtići koji zaslužuju široku društveni skrb. Ivani-
Grad se prepoznaje kao grad kojemu je stalo do dječji vrtića
jer su neophodni za društveni razvoj mališana. Ivani-Grad
se, povijesti hrvatskoga vatrogastva, posebno ponosi i svo-
jim sinom Gjurom (Đurom) Stjepanom Deželićem, utemelji-
telju hrvatskoga vatrogastva uopće. (0 njemu više ovdje, u
knjizi, str. 128) Stoga je kratka povijest o dobrovoljnom va-
trogasnom društvu u ivanić-Gradu i okolici, s pravom, svoje
mjesto našla u ovoj monografiji.
Čitatelj će svakako svoju pozornost usredotočiti na treći
dio ove monografije u kojem su prikazane dvije važne teme:
Ivanić-Grada u Domovinskom ratu (1991.-1995.) i Grad Ivanić-
Grad danas. Ta su priloga zanimljiva to više što će u njima
današnji čitatelj, iz Ivanić-Grada i okolice, razabrati da je
on i netko od njegovih najbližih ili dalje rodbine bio (i jest)
svojom zauzetošću vezan uz suvremenu povijest toga gra-
vanjem 65. Ivanić-gradska bojna. 0 svemu tome čitatelje će
više saznati upravo iz predočenoga priloga u monografiji.
Grad Ivanić-Grad danas opširno je prikazan u prilogu ko-
jim je zaokružena istoimena monografija. Čitatelj, slikom i
riječju, može pratiti sve ono u čemu se taj grad potvrđuje
u svoj svojoj društvenoj, kulturnoj, gospodarskoj, industrij-
skoj, trgovačkoj, turističkoj, privatno-poduzetničkoj, sport-
skoj i drugoj polifunkcionalnosti.
skim i drugim resursima. To su pak odlične pretpostavke za
bolju budućnost Grada Ivanić-Grada i njegove okolice koju
on svakako ima.

Summary
lvanić-Grad of today, when it comes to its administrative
and governing area, is located along the river Lonja in Mo-
slavina, at 103 m above the sea level, along the master road
Zagreb - Lipovac, state road Bjelovar - lvanić-Grad, and
regional road and railroad Zagreb - Vinkovci. Settlements
with local self-government stretch across more than 17.000
hectares: Caginec, Deanovec, Derežani, Donji Šarampov,
Graberje Ivanićko, Greda Breška, lvanić-Grad, Jalševec Breš-
ki, Lepšie, Lijevi Dubrovčak, Opatinec, Posavski Bregi, Preč-
no, Prerovec, Prkos Ivanićki, Tarno, Topolje, Trebovec, Šemo-
vec Breški, Šumečani, Zaklepica and Zelina Breška. Within
the Zagreb County, lvanić-Grad is located at its south-ea-
stern part, bordering on the south with Sisak-Moslavina Co-
unty, and a smaller region of its north-eastern border leans
against Bjelovar-Bilogora County. Ivanić area includes 370
km2, with 173.53 km2 of the Town of lvanić-Grad.
During its eventful history, the Town of lvanić-Grad has
been developing in different phases, each leaving its mark
in the Town’s social and political, as well as overall cultural
and economic life. That is exactly what this monography is
about.
Historic, economic and cultural development of the Iva-
nić area and the events that took place in Ivanić itself, as well
as in its narrow and wider area, may be studied in more de-
tail in historic sources only after the 13th century. Although
the first written record of the name Ivanić is guaranteed in
the document written by Zagreb bishop Stjepan II (in 1246),
it is safe to assume that by founding the Zagreb Diocese (in
1094) Ivanić, as a Parish, formed a constituent part of Du-
brava Diocese with administrative and court centre in Du-
brava. Over time, that old Ivanić Parish developed and the
settlements to the south of Dubrava provided the bishop of
Zagreb with an option of forming a separate administrative
centre in Ivanić for those settlements. Naturally, that resul-
ted in new feudal arrangement of the diocese’s land. The
foundation of Ivanić Parish is mentioned for the first time in
historic documents by Bishop Ivan 1 (1288). Such regional
administration of that part of the diocese’s property lasted
until the 16th century when Turkish advances destroyed that
old feudal division of that part of Croatia, just as a reminder,
the boundaries of the old Ivanić Parish were marked by the
river Česma (Čazma) to the east, brook Črnec and the river
Lonja to the south. The western boundary was marked by
Lonja with Zelina, and the northern border, separating Ivanić
Parish from Dubrava Parish was Glogovnica brook, up to Po-
ljanski Lug along Lupoglav and Zelina. From such boundaries,
it is clear that the borders of old Ivanić Parish were different
than they are now, which were mentioned above.
360
Kloštar Ivanić has been mentioned in previous historic
works. It is said to be older than current Ivanić-Grad. As
mentioned before, long time age both settlements were a
part of Zagreb Diocese, and the bishops called them „their
Ivanić settlement” and „new Ivanić settlement”. Apart from
that, the first written record of the place Ivanić in the docu-
ment of the said bishop Stjepan II (1246) confirms the fact
that Ivanić, as a settlement of serfs and free peasants, existed
even before the abovesaid year. They had their rights and
benefits. That will, later on, be confirmed as well by bishop
Eberhard (1404). The Bishop’s Document (1246) says that he
had already founded a monastery for nuns in that place (Iva-
nić) and that they were granted land for sustenance. Howe-
ver, the nuns, having no skills for farming the land, left the
monastery without the bishop’s knowledge. All of that must
have taken place before 1242, because had the monastery
been devastated by the Tartar invasion in the same year,
the bishop would have mentioned that in the document as
well (1246). He, however, only stated that he restored the old
monastery in 1246, and had the new monastery church bu-
ilt: „We have built St. Mary’s Church in Ivanić” and he invi-
ted again new nuns, respecting the wishes of King Bela IV.
The bishop gave the monastery the same land intended for
the first monastery. Therefore, Bishop Ivan 1 only confirmed
such property in 1288 by his document, When it comes to
Ivanić as a place, it can be discerned from the said docu-
ments that, at the time, there was only one Ivanić, and when
Ivanić Parish was founded, that name was accepted for the
entire Parish. However, in time, at the end of the 13th and in
the 14th century the name Ivanić began to be written with
attributes (additional names): Kloštar Ivanić (since in Latin,
claustrum means independent, in Croatian Kajkavian dialect
klošter/kloštar), it was called „villa Iwan(i)ch” (Ivanić settle-
ment), and „libera villa Iwan(i)ch” which means free Ivanić
settlement. That is when two towns/settlements were alre-
ady discerned - (old and new). However, in the medieval
documents of Zagreb Kaptol (Bishop’s office) only Ivanić is
always mentioned (now Kloštar Ivanić). Current Ivanić-Grad
was mentioned in documents from the 15th century up to
the 17th century, and also under the name of „Island”, which
means that there was water around the town (surrounded
by water) for defence reasons. At the beginning of the 16lh
century, its administrative name was Ivanić Fortress („Iva-
nić tvrđa”, Festung Ivanich). Therefore, that name was given
at the time of forming a Military Frontier, Ivan Belostenec, a
Croatian monk from the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit,
was also familiar with that, as at his Latin-Croatian Kajka-
vian dictionary/Gazophylacium illyrico-latinum (1740, 144),
he wrote down the name, however, in plural form: Ivanichi,
vulgô Kloster, a place below Zagreb. Ivanichium, ij. Under
entry No. 2 it says Ivanichi tvlrgya, vulgo Fesztunga. Praesi-
dium Ivanichense. Therefore, Belostenec knew about Kloštar
Ivanić and Ivanić Fortress (Ivanić tvrđa) where the town ad-
ministration was located. Why were Ivanić settlements (Ivani-
či) present in Belostenec’s work? Maybe because they were
two settlements, two „Ivanićs”, very close to one another.
Also, even before Belostenec, Stjepan Glavač recorded them
on the first Croatian map from 1673, writing down the geo-
graphical name as Iuanitsi (Ivaniči), namely, in plural. Ivanić
fortress, built by Zagreb bishop Šimun Erdödy Bakač, was
just one in the row of such defence forces located also in:
Križ, Dubrava, Gofnic (Čazma), Gradec, Vrbovac, Hrastovi-
ca and Sisak, and they serves as defence against Ottoman
conquests. Namely, it should be noted that a new type of
administration zone was organised in 1578, in Styrian town
of Bruck an der Mur (Bridge upon Mura), a military-terri-
torial unit which was, over time, separated from the juris-
diction of Croatian administrative bodies and subordina-
ted to military Habsbourg government with headquarters in
Graz. A Military Frontier was created. The increasing need
for defending the diocese s land was especially clear after
the Battle of Mohács (1526). Since the abovesaid fortresses
had to be maintained and repaired, Juraj Herešinec, a canon
from Zagreb, appealed to the emperor Ferdinad 1 for help,
whom Croatian nobility elected on 1 January 1527 in Cetin-
grad. It is not known whether Ferdinand I helped them with
that. Perhaps not immediately, since Zagreb bishop Šimun
Erdödy was a supporter of the Duke of Erdelj, Ivan Zapo-
lja, Ferdinanad’s rival, who was elected by Hungarian and
Slavonian nobility. As a result of that, a civil war was lead
between the two camps, those supporting Ferdinand and
those supporting Zapolja, which was bloodier than the Tur-
kish conquests. What is known is that Ivanić fortress was
the smallest Renaissance fortress built entirely of wood and
soil in the territory between the rivers Sava and Drava, and
it played a very important role in defending the Slavonian
border and later on Varaždin Generalate during the period
of Military Frontier. Year 1765 was especially happy for the
inhabitants of Ivanić Fortress, since Empress Maria Theresa
granted the town the status of a free military community.
That, namely, meant that the townsfolk were free from for-
ced labour, they were not serfs, and military government
guaranteed them safety - they had the status of free mi-
litary citizens. However, they had to serve in the army, go
to battlefields, keep guard and maintain military buildings.
Such a status clearly brought a lot of disputes concerning ju-
risdiction of Zagreb bishops and newly settled Vlachs who
did not want to accept the rules of Zagreb Diocese, i.e. all
the acquiescence that other Diocese’s subjects had to per-
form. The Vlachs referred to what they have gained by their
361
new status. It all resulted from the action taken by the Co-
uncil of War in Vienna in 1768, and according to its decisi-
on, the Diocese’s land in Čazma, Dubrava and Ivanić was
annexed to the Military Frontier, and Zagreb Diocese was
awarded land in Banat in return. That resulted in a comple-
tely different status of the inhabitants of Ivanić Fortress and
the surrounding settlements. They were, actually, excluded
from the civil Ban government, Zagreb County and the Par-
liament, and were subject to military government - Council
of War with headquarters in Graz. It is interesting to note
that Pavao Vitezović (1652 - 1773), in his work Chronicles
(1696), stated the events concerning Ivanić and the surroun-
ding area twice. First entry was for year 1565. He wrote that
Croatian Ban Petard Erdody defeated the Turks near Obreš-
ka: „That summer, Peter Erdeudi, a Slovenian and Croatian
Ban, crushed Mustafa Sokolović, Bey of Bosnia, at Obreška,
with a small group of great heroes against 26000 Turks, and
they returned with great gain, and with many slaves.” For
year 1574, also in the Chronicles (1696), Vitezović recorded
the following: „Ivon Panović, captain of Ivanić, with a small
group of soldiers crushed and slew many Turks.”
In the monography, among other things, the modern
reader is presented in detail with urban development and
construction of Ivanić (Festung Ivanich) based on maps as
witnesses. In that context, the first place definitely goes to
Angielini’s map, made in 1560. That was the period when
Ivanić changed from the feudal into a military-frontier for-
tress which was, at the time, on the first line of defence of
the Kingdom of Croatia. It is certain that, in such defence-
based circumstances, Ivanić lost its past economic capaci-
ties of the settlement and feudal possessions as such. The
said map is also the oldest source presenting the appea-
rance and the urban structure of Ivanić. It can be discer-
ned that the fortress is still under construction and that it is
a stylised image. Apart from that, the map displays a dual
urban structure of Ivanić. It is clear that Ivanić was built on
two brooks in the middle of the Lonja river, namely at one
expansion thereof. There is a military and a civil part of the
settlement. In the 17th century, the Austrian and Military
Frontier mapmaker, Martin Stier, also presents very a pre-
cise plan of Ivanić fortress. He gave an even better presen-
tation of a military and a civil part, connected to the shore
by a bridge and the so called military Ivanić. It means, na-
mely, that the civil part, in a sense, was necessary to the
military part, probably as a sort of an outpost, although that
part was then within the Diocese’s land. After the peace tre-
aty in Srijemski Karlovci in 1699, the Ottomans were forced
back from Slavonia, and a more peaceful live started for the
inhabitants of Varaždin Generalate and Ivanić. Settling the
people in those areas increased and, at the beginning of the
18th century, the settlements started developing in Ivanić
area. Therefore the maps, made in that century, still dis-
play Ivanić fortress as if it has a dominant role. One map
from 1700, of an unknown author, presents an island with
civil part of the settlement, connected by bridge to the mi-
litary Ivanić. The only building, marked in the civil part of
the settlement, is located along the very entrance into the
town, and it is the church of St. Peter, which is mentioned
in canonical visitations back in 1649. The oldest display of
the old Ivanić Church of St. Peter is on that map. As menti-
oned earlier, at the time of forming the borders of Varaždin
Generalate (1768), Ivanić, as well as the area surrounding it,
was included in the expansion of the generalate. Therefore,
eight villages were annexed to it: Srednji, Gornji and Dolnji
Šarampov, Lonja, Kloštar Ivanić, Ščapovec, Lipovac (Lonj-
ski) and Čemernica (Lonjska). During that bordering, a new
map was made, displaying the structure of Ivanić in mid-
18th century. In that century, the surrounding settlements
were being developed, connecting with civil settlements
that started growing into agricultural settlements, and that
continued improving their development, with Ivanić as their
centre. Thanks to its geographical position and a long tra-
dition of trade and craft, Ivanić received a status of a privi-
leged military frontier town (1770). Despite all that, Ivanić
was still a military community. The map of Ivanić from that
period (1785) witnessed the development it underwent du-
ring the 18th century. What used to be a small fortress has
now grown into a significant trading centre, expanding from
the island along Lonja and access roads and taking on new
forms, so the wooden houses would soon be replaced by
buildings made of bricks in accordance with the needs of
the new civil society. lvanić-Grad entered a new era in its
history, culture and economy. When Varaždin Generalate
of the Military Frontier was abolished, and when the em-
peror Franz Joseph I decided on 8 June 1871 to award the
trading centre Ivanić the title of a town, Ivanić Fortress (Fe-
stung Ivanich) changed its name into the present lvanić-Grad.
Therefore, 8 June is rightfully determined as a date marking
the Town, which has remained a tradition ever since. On
7 July of the abovesaid year, the people of Ivanić celebra-
ted the emperor’s decision, and a month later, on 7 August,
the emperor’s commissioner lieutenant general Rosenzweig
and Colonel Ivan Trnski (famous Croatian poet) have dismi-
ssed the former administration of military community, and
new administration was elected, chaired by the new ma-
jor Lazar Kajganović. What helped lvanić-Grad throughout
the years of its development was strong craftsmanship that
has been developing ever since Ivanić became a fortress.
Craftsmanship was necessary, first of all, to the military at
the Military Frontier. lvanić-Grad has been developing in-
362
tensely as craft and market place since 1907. With such a
development, demographic image of lvanić-Grad is defini-
tely important. Therefore, the monography displays changes
in population from 1900 to 2011. With tables displayed, any
oscillations in the number of inhabitants in lvanić-Grad are
visible, taking into consideration the following indicators:
natural changes in the population, migrations, population
structure per age and sex, as well as the economic activity,
population per business activity, educational structure and
national composition of the population. All that played a si-
gnificant role in the economic development of lvanić-Grad.
lvanić-Grad moved forward in the 19ttl century with
new zest in construction, economy, craft, culture and other
areas of great importance for people of Ivanić district. That
century wrote an entirely new history together with Ivanić
people, along with all that prosperity implies. A proof of
that in the 19th century was the newly built parish church
of St. Peter, which is also mentioned in this monography.
Apart from that, lvanić-Grad area is rich in sacral buildings
as well: parish churches, chapels (9) and shrines. For re-
ligious life of that area, parishes are definitely significant,
founded at the end of the 18th century, for example with
reorganisation of parishes in Zagreb Diocese, during the
bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovec, Lijevi Dubrovčak and Lupo-
glav in 1789, Posavski Bregi in 1790, etc. (And by that we
do not mean medieval Ivanić Parish, which is in the Sta-
tute of Zagreb Kaptol listed in 1334). The independent pa-
rish in lvanić-Grad was founded pursuant to the decision of
the emperor Franz I. on 5 October 1804. Talking about the
parish, lvanić-Grad graveyards must be mentioned as well.
There are three (three former catholic) graveyards there: the
town graveyard with the chapel of St. Ivan Nepomuk, the
so called frontier graveyard in Gornje Šarampovo with the
chapel of St. Magdalena, and the graveyard near the chapel
of St. James in Poljana Breška. (Lukinović, 2007, 167). From
the point of view of church art history, there are very va-
luable items in lvanić-Grad: church furniture, ecclesiastical
robes, grails, monstrances, wall and ceiling paintings, and
altars. All that makes valuable treasure which deserves a
monography of its own. The rural traditional construction
building, which found its place in Ivanić settlements as pre-
cious, integrated heritage, is represented here in this book
in words and pictures. Moreover, as an inseparable part of
Ivanić settlements, a sort of pearl, there is a wide spectre of
ethnographic markers: folk costume, handicrafts, footwear,
jewellery, etc. It is, therefore, logical to present them in this
monography as well, in general, it can be said for lvanić-
Grad population that, throughout history, it was embellis-
hed by: faith, honesty and pride in its tradition and its role in
defending Croatia during the Turkish conquests. We believe
that the readers will be especially interested in the economic
development of lvanić-Grad until 1945. That chapter in the
monography is even more significant since it has been pre-
sented in the context of social and political situation in the
19th and the first half of the 20th century. The economic de-
velopment of lvanić-Grad in the second half of the 20th cen-
tury is also described in this monography. As a range of pla-
ces and towns throughout former Yugoslavia, lvanić-Grad
also contributed in that chapter of its history in the National
Liberation War. Therefore, that section was not skipped in
the monography. And one more thing. It is a common expre-
ssion, for any town, that parks are the lungs of a town. The
Town of lvanić-Grad can really be proud of its town park,
designed by a famous teacher from lvanić-Grad, Stjepan Po-
sezi, in cooperation with a gardener from Zagreb Vitesla-
va Durchaneka (1831). That park was renamed in 1997 into
Park hrvatskih branitelja (Park of Croatian Flomeland War Ve-
terans) - before that it was called Park Stjepana Posezija
(Stjepana Posezi’s Park). There is a text on that town park in
this monography as well.
It is a well-known fact that in every nation s history,
throughout the world, there are significant, deserving indi-
viduals who indebted that nation in literal, historical, edu-
cational, economic and political areas. lvanić-Grad is no
exception, and Ivanić area has its distinguished individuals
who make, and justly so, every generation proud. Therefore,
significant amount of attention is paid to them in this mo-
nography. Longer and shorter texts display the life and work
of twenty distinguished persons from lvanić-Grad, whose
work has made a mark in the Croatian and European profe-
ssional literature and history in general. Their names are fa-
miliar to some readers, while others are still waiting to get to
know them. We believe that this chapter in the monography,
about the distinguished and deserving people from lvanić-
Grad, will be of use in the native history classes of our ele-
mentary school pupils, high school and university students,
where they will find new inspiration for their own spiritual
and creative achievements and new research. It is a usual
practice to include the language part in the monography as
well, i.e. a description of the language of a certain area, re-
gion, place or town. In this monography, it is the speech of
Posavski Bregi (hills of Posavina), described in a modern lin-
guistic methods, therefore it will be an appreciated linguistic
reading for Croatian and Slavic dialectologists.
The image of lvanić-Grad is presented through religious,
cultural and the overall public life in the second part of the
monography. Apart from certain historic features of lvanić-
Grad, there are some data concerning contemporary chur-
ch and religious life of the Parish, The library and reading
room lvanić-Grad, since it was founded in 1877, is presented
363
by its purpose and activity within the spectre of ail that is
confirming it as a centre of cultural and literary events. It is
clear from the presentation thereof that the existence of the
Library and reading room of Ivanić-Grad is significant to the
Ivanić-Grad area. A range of amateur cultural and artistic
societies (Croatian: KUD) shows just how enriching cultu-
ral and artistic amateurism is to Ivanić-Grad. The enthu-
siasm of their members, from senior citizens to children,
helps them achieve significant results in the areas of cho-
rus singing, brass bands, folklore, traditional crafts, etc. The
awards they won prove their quality. Without the activity
of cultural and artistic societies of Ivanic-Grad, the cultu-
ral history of the town would be poorer. In the history of
Ivanić-Grad, the People’s university has played a significant
role in the field of culture, education, theatre performances,
exhibitions, concerts (it was founded in 1959, and since 1997
it bears the name of People’s Open University). The menti-
oned numerous and diverse activities of that Ivanić-Grad
institution show that during the years of its existence it has
been the initiator, the engine and the creator of all that be-
ars the common denominator of a cultural and educational
institution. With the economic activity of the national uni-
versity, Ivanić-Grad introduced new contents in 1970 ~ ra-
dio-shows of Radio Ivanić-Grad (now Obiteljski radio Ivanić
(Family Radio Ivanić)) which is now a modern radio station
with a 24-hour programme. Family radio Ivanić is happily
listened to in Croatia and throughout the world wherever
Croatian people live. Now, that modern radio station has a
future. Educational system of Ivanić-Grad has always been,
and it still is, a part of its, perhaps, the most significant hi-
story since the 18th century. It can be said without exagge-
ration that education of a country, region, town and muni-
cipality is the most important segment of its development.
Therefore, the education of Ivanić-Grad is a living proof of
that. The town has a developed elementary and high school
education. That part of Ivanić-Grad is also presented in the
monography, by a relatively short text, from the beginnings
until today. A display of development of pre-school educa-
tion in Ivanić-Grad adds to that, with important role played
by kindergartens which deserve a wider social care. Ivanić-
Grad is a town recognised as caring for kindergartens, since
they are vital for social life of the little ones. In the history of
Croatian fire-fighting, Ivanić-Grad is especially proud of its
son Gjuro (Đuro) Stjepan Deželić, the founder of Croatian
fire-fighting in general. (More about him here, in the book,
page 128) Therefore, the short history of voluntary fire bri-
gade in Ivanić-Grad and the surrounding area has found its
rightful place in this monography as well.
The readers will definitely focus their attention to the
third part of this monography, showing two important to-
pics: Ivanic-Grad in Homeland war (1991-1995) and The Town
of Ivanic-Grad Today. Those two articles are interesting even
more since the modern readers from Ivanic-Grad or the
surrounding area will find that they and someone from the-
ir close or removed family was (and is) connected to the
contemporary history of that town. In Croatian contempo-
rary history, events are known from the time of creating
the independent Croatian state, with an epilogue being the
Great-Serbian aggression (1991 ֊ 1995) against Croatia. It
was a defensive Homeland War that lasted several years, in
which Ivanic-Grad with the surrounding area and the Za-
greb County contributed in many ways. It is well-known by
the defence activities of the 65th Ivanic-Grad battalion. The
readers will learn more about that by the said text in the
monography.
The Town of Ivanic-Grad Today is extensively presented
in the article closing the monography, bearing the same
name. The reader, in image and in words, may follow all
that town confirms in its social, cultural, economic, indu-
strial, commercial, tourist, private entrepreneurial, sports
and other polyfunctionality. Bearing all that in mind, i.e.
how extensive and what kind of potential there is in the cu-
rrent development of Ivanic-Grad, it can be safely said that
this town has an advantage within the Zagreb County, by its
natural, economic and other resources. Those are, on the
other hand, excellent prerequisites for a better future of the
Town of Ivanic-Grad and its surrounding area which is de-
finitely in store for it.
