Summary
Adam Rieger (1909-1998) was a Polish musicologist and professor at the Krakow Academy of Music. His professional life extended over many fields. He studied piano and conducting at the Krakow Music Conservatory and graduated in 1928 with the highest distinction. He pursued his piano education in Paris but his career as a pianist was cut short by an acute illness affecting his wrists. He then enrolled in the Philosophy Faculty of the Jagiellonian University to follow courses in the field of musicology and in 1938 obtained his master’s degree (MA). In the years leading up to the war, Rieger often appeared in concerts as pianist, conductor and presenter of classical music in schools’ concerts. For two years (1934-36) he was in charge of the Music Section of Krakow Radio, recruiting talented musicians to collaborate with the radio, introducing educational broadcasts for young listeners, and helping organize the Wawel Festivals transmitted live across Poland.
His teaching career, spanning over 60 years, began very early, while he was still a student. Between 1930 and 1936 he taught piano and theory at the Krakow Conservatory, for one year (1938/1939) he was Director of the Music Institute in Grodno, where he also gave courses, and in the academic year 1940/41 he taught at the Vilnius Music Conservatory. In June 1941 he returned to Krakow and during the remaining years of the occupation helped to support his family by private teaching (music and languages, mainly English). He also became involved in arranging clandestine concerts in which many prominent musicians took part, including his wife, Maria Bilinska-Riegerowa. At that time, as evidenced by his letters and other writings, he
195
was already planning for and discussing with friends the shape of the education system in post-war Poland. His views were based on his deeply felt belief in the principle of equal educational opportunities for all and his concern that so many talented children were denied top-level education and their talents wasted. As for forming professional musicians, he believed that highly talented children, selected from all classes of society, should be given optimum conditions for their personal and artistic development and educated in special schools staffed by excellent teachers.
After the war, he tried to put his ideas into practice and devoted himself to the task of reforming the music education system in Poland. He expressed his views in conferences and in articles on the subject and prepared programmes for music schools of different levels. His motto was “maximum music education for all pupils, best possible conditions for exceptionally gifted children”. In 1945 he organized and became the principal of a primary music school which originally was to become what he referred to as “szkola talentôw”, a special school for talented pupils. However, this idea was rejected by the Ministry and the project was never realized. Nevertheless, this did not dampen Rieger’s enthusiasm for organizing and improving music education, and for several years he was Headmaster of both a primary and a secondary school (Panstwowe Liceum Muzyczne) which integrated general and music education. At the same time (from 1947) he also taught at the Music Academy in Krakow and was Dean of the Department of Music Education from 1963 until his retirement in 1979. He helped create Studium Edytorstwa Muzycznego, a unique postgraduate course preparing future music editors, where he gave seminars and supervised theses. He continued teaching part-time at the Academy until 1991.
For many years Rieger closely cooperated with Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne (Polish Music Publishing House) which was founded in 1945, immediately after the war. He became a member of the PWM committee in charge of Pedagogiczna Biblioteka Fortepianowa (Pedagogical Piano Library), a series which published compositions for young people. Rieger contributed many publications, initially with several other editors,
196
later mainly in collaboration with Jan Hoffman and sometimes with his wife. These editions, based on careful research and faithfulness to the original (urtext), are still regularly reprinted and extensively used in music schools.
Aside from his contributions in the field of music education and editing, Rieger was involved in many projects and music events in Poland and was a member of several organizations bringing together musicians and musicologists. Before the war he was a co-founder of the Young Musicians Association, whose aim was to support and promote young artists. After the war he helped organize the Union of Polish Musicians, was on the Board of PWM, TIFC (Frederick Chopin Society) and SPAM (Polish Association of Musicians). In the 1950s he took part in an ambitious project to collect and record Polish folk songs in the Kurpie region and developed a new and original system of indexing folk melodies. For several years he delivered lectures on Polish music in different languages (English, French and German) to foreign students and music teachers within the framework of the Jagiellonian University Summer School. He took part and read papers in many conferences in Poland and abroad.
This book consists of three parts:
Part I, Life and Work, provides an account of Professor Rieger’s life and his achievements and contributions in several fields. The authors make generous use of documents, letters and diaries in family records. The picture that emerges is of a man with outstanding gifts and wide interests, engaged in many (perhaps too many) fields of activity, an idealist bursting with new ideas and occasionally eccentric projects, struggling to fulfill his dreams and aspirations as well as provide for his family (three children) in the difficult circumstances of life in communist Poland. A chapter is dedicated to his wife, Maria Bilinska-Riegerowa, whose career as a concert pianist and piano teacher was interrupted by her premature death. Excerpts are cited from excellent reviews, written by prominent music critics, of her concerts and radio recordings.

In Part II, Publications, the authors examine Rieger’s impressive contributions in the field of music editorship and also review his articles that appeared in Polish periodicals, quoting passages that illustrate his style and provide evidence of his considerable literary talent. His work as a translator is also discussed, especially his excellent translation of Alfred Einstein’s biography of Mozart, published by PWM. Apart from his published texts, some of his many unpublished writings are considered, such as his often long, always well-researched “internal” critical reviews for PWM and TIFC that recommended books for publication (or not), as well as his translations of Aldous Huxley’s essays, undertaken in the last years of his life.
Part III, Recollections, opens with Professor Mieczystaw Tomaszewski’s account of his close friendship with Adam Rieger and his observations on Rieger’s admirable qualities as teacher, editor and musicologist (’’Adam Rieger had all the makings of an outstanding musicologist, representing what we call nowadays humanistic musicology...”). Professor Tomaszewski concludes: ’’All of us who were fortunate enough to know him owe him a great deal.” Most of the other “recollections” come from Adam Rieger’s former students, now successful musicians, who recall the support and encouragement they received from Dean Rieger in the early, often difficult years of their musical apprenticeship. Rieger’s pedagogical credo was based on the holistic concept of education; he believed that the development of personality and character were as important as artistic development. He also emphasized that a professor should not only like but also respect his students. This approach was certainly appreciated by students, as testified by their reminiscences. Here are some of their comments:
“He was an extraordinary teacher - unconventional, inspiring, and gushing with ideas...” (Krzysztof Meyer).
“His concern for the students and his empathy were most engaging” (Pawel Przytocki).
“I was greatly impressed by his erudition, musical sensitivity and his almost legendary mastery of several languages... What
198
distinguished him among other eminent professors at the Music Conservatory was his enormous goodwill towards other musicians and towards students” (Antoni Wit).
“He was always willing to help and advise students who came to talk to him about their problems, often personal ones. His openness and ability to find positive qualities in every young person helped many talented but insecure students gain self-confidence and overcome their complexes” (Ewa Michnik-Szynalska).
“Adam was a force of nature, his mind racing with ideas... I left for home (...) immeasurably enriched by his friendship, energy, culture and sheer humanity” (Adrian Thomas).
