(Summary)
After several dozen years, even in the scientific publications on the Pomeranian
political formations stemming from the National Democracy, little attention is devoted
to national, political organizations operating in Gdynia. This monograph aims at the rec-
reation of the history of the National Democrats in the city and also at characterization
of the specificity of the growing influences of organizations established around the
programme of “defensive nationalism . The National Party operating in Gdynia played
a significant role in political life of this dynamically developing in the interwar period city.
It should be underlined, that supporters of the National Camp managed to retain their
strong position, despite the fact that their activity faced two vital obstacles: on the one
hand, Gdynia — one of the biggest working class centres from the beginning of the 1930s
was the natural bastion of left-wing parties influence, on the other hand the city was in
the greater degree (comparing with other urban centres) dependent on the camp cur-
rently governing Poland, which was additionally influenced by the legal status of municipal
system that enabled the state to take the role of the city actual host.
The most important factor supporting the development of organizing the National
Camp in Gdynia was the locating the city in the Pomeranian region, where before 1920,
the anti-German and „national and Catholic influences prevailed. Kashubians living
in Gdynia reluctantly accepted the interference of the outer factors in their lives and also
negatively evaluated the May Coup d Etat in 1926 and its consequences. Although, after
1926, the authorities in Warsaw promoted development of the portin Gdynia, liquidation
of the local self-government and belittling the issue of the city development led to the oc-
currence of the opposition assuming the position of the defender of the local, “settled
populace Another factor favourable for the National Democrats arose from the fact that
the majority of the incoming people came from the area of the former Prussian partition
and had been under the prevailing influence of national or Catholic organizations since
1920. The opposition right wing took actions not only in defence of the local populace,
but also raised the slogan of “civilization superiority of the model of society formed
on the West (i.e. pre-war Germany). The course of events in the 1930s confirmed the ac-
curacy of the predictions formulated by the National Democrats and concerning numerous
threats that should have been opposed by the formula of defensive nationalism . Besides

the aversion to the politics of the governing Sanation (Polish: Sanacja), this idea consisted
in the consistent opposing German revisionism and the growing influences of the radical
socialist trend. Around 1935, due to the inflow of the Jews to Gdynia, the National Party
supported by Gdynia traders put the anti-Jewish action in the first place, aiming at the
defence of the „national and Catholic character of Gdynia. After winning over the gov-
ernmental Camp of National Union in the local elections in February 1939, the National
Democrats launched an offensive aiming at expanding own influences in the environment
of labourers. On the eve of the outbreak of the war between Poland and Germany, they
mobilized the society of Gdynia to counteract both German Nazism and Jewish com-
munism, as well as Freemasonic demoliberalism.
Organizational development of the National Camp (Polish: Obóz Narodowy) in Gdy-
nia, in years 1920-1939 was presented in five chapters. In the first chapter, there was
shown the development of the self-government together with forming the first structures
of the National Camp in Gdynia. Their crystallization in the form of the Camp of Great Poland
(Obóz Wielkiej Polski) and the National Party (Polish: Stronnictwo Narodowe) coincided
with the May Coup d Etat, granting a city charter to Gdynia and introducing the appointed
administrators system in the city at the end of 1930. In the second chapter, the activity
of the structures of the National Party and the Camp of Great Poland was described, with
the special attention paid to the development of the youth movement stopped by the
incidents in July 1932 and the dissolution of the Camp of Great Poland structures. The
third chapter depicts the process of the ideological and programme transformation after
1934, as the result of merging the youth movement with the National Camp. Since 1935,
in the propaganda of the National Democrats, the anti-Jewish activity took the first place
and it gained the support of Gdynia traders, resulting in the subsequent years in the dy-
namic organizational growth of the party led by Marian Zawodny and the significant devel-
opment of its influences in the city. The fourth chapter characterises the period of the mass,
public events in years 1937-1939, thank to which the National Party under the leadership
of Adam Tomaszewski outdistanced the supporters of the Sanation, usurping the right
to playtheroleofthegreatestpoliticalpowerabletocounteractthe influences of the Jews
and the radical Left, defined by the National Democrats as Jewish-communist-Masoniy .
The results of the self-government elections in February 1939 showed that the National
Party in Gdynia is a dominant political force in the City Centre district and in terms of the
scope of influence equals the left-wing socialist Polish Socialist Party. The fifth chapter
presents the last months of the activity of the National Party in Gdynia, before the outbreak
of the Polish-German war, when the attempt at drawing labourers to the national trade
unions Polish Labour (Polish: Praca Polska ) was made.
In the last, final chapters dealing with problem issues, the histoiy of the National
Democrats in Gdynia in the synthetic perspective was presented. In chapter six, the achieve-
ments and the evolution of the National Democrats in Gdynia in comparison with the his-

tory of the National Camp were characterized, with indication of the radicalism of the Na-
tional Democrats in Gdynia and their connections with the national-democratic centre
in Poznań, as well as the use of experiences of the National Party in Łódź. In the seventh
chapter, the role of the National Camp in interwar Gdynia, particularly the City Centre
district was described. National Democrats in Gdynia had the biggest support of Kashu-
bians and the incomers from Great Poland (Polish: Wielkopolska) and Pomerania (Polish:
Pomorze). National Democrats supporters played the significant role among traders and
craftsmen and in the small group of intelligentsia (lawyers and doctors). The support given
by the Catholic clergy was also meaningful.
