ABSTRACT
Archaeological research into the Bronze Age cemetery in Canapina started in 2008.
The excavations were performed during six successive campaigns, from 2008 to 2013, and
initially had a rescue character. Sixty graves were unearthed; some of which had been
already disturbed, but also the scattered human of several individuals found in inhumation
burials that had been strongly affected by Late Medieval or recent construction works. We
also identified several features similar to graves, containing pots or sherds, but no human
bones; a practice which could be consistent with symbolic burials. Both inhumation and
cremation burials were investigated. Inhumation was the prevailing funeral rite and
covered approx. 80% of the total number of identified individuals. The grave inventories
appear to display certain elements specific to Noua and Monteoru cultures. Furthermore,
three inhumation burials were accompanied by pots bearing the specific decorations
attributed to Tei culture. The cultural assignment of several vessels recovered from
cremation graves was problematic. However, a careful consideration of the correlations
and analogies that could be made along with other details of the burial rite and ritual (the
typology of features, the presence of upside down pots, the sandy paste, the distribution
within the plan etc.) indicate their contemporaneity with the rest of the graves. According
to radiocarbon age definitions and relative chronology markers the evolution of this
cemetery was referred back to the Late Bronze Age.
The burial site is located on a high terrace on the left side of the Prahova river,
north of its confluence with the Doftana river, to the south of Canapina city (Prahova
County), at an altitude of 500 m. This area is characterized by hills and high terraces
flanking both sides of the Doftana and Prahova rivers. The stratigraphic sequence of this
site is simple: under the arable brown claish land, 0.20-0.30 m thick, lays a layer of fine
gravel mixed with reddish brown clay, up to 0.15 m thick. Beneath this level there is the
natural terrace deposit, consisting of coarse gravel mixed with large granulation sand and
reddish clay. The plainess of the stratigraphy, lacking in relevant details posed significant
limitations on thorough archaeological observations.
Right under the arable land were noticed agglomerations of stones of various sizes,
coming from the arrangement of mounds over the burials. In most cases modem works
changed the original shape of these mounds. The stones used for their construction had various
sizes, ranging from 0.10 m to 0.20-0.40, rarely reaching 0.50-0.60 m in length, usually with
rounded edges, but there were also larger stones with sharp edges. They were rectangular, wide
and long more than thick, however, stone blocks or thin gritstone plates were also found. Small
rocks (3-6 cm in diameter) were also used for mound construction. The mounds, identified at ֊
202 | Alin Frinculeasa
0.15 - 0.30 deep, were oval-elongated in the case of inhumations, while the shapes of
cremation graves were more difficult to define accurately.
The grave construction implied several actions: the pit was dug, sometimes its
walls were lined with stones and after the burial a mound of earth and stone was raised
above. Although this is true for most of the inhumation burials, in some cases the mounds
were built mainly of earth and only a few stone plates, sometimes slightly larger (0.20-
0.40 m). There were also situations when skeletons covered with stones were found
immediately beneath the surface, -0.05-0.20 m deep. These individuals were not buried in
pits, but the graves were marked by stones placed around the dead. This was the case of a
double burial (Gr.42), found right beneath the surface, where the deceased were
surrounded by a rectangular stone arrangement.
The presence of stone arrangements is the main characteristic of several inhumation
and cremation burials. Some of them still had stone mounds that covered the buried and
marked the grave. The stones either lined the pit edges or served to the construction of rings
that surrounded the buried who were placed in small pits or hollows. The grave pits were
rectangular with rounded comers, their walls were lined with stones. The individuals were
covered with earth, above which stone mounds were raised. There graves probably had
wooden covers, as indicated by some pots placed on stone plates which seemed to have
changed their position in a time period subsequent to the burial and prior or contemporary
with the rotting/decay of the cover. The use of stone in burial structures is well known
throughout the Bronze Age and was represented in contemporary or neighbouring cultural
horizons such as Mnogovalikovaja, Smbnaja, Monteom, Sabatinovka and Noua.
Sixty burials were unearthed, 47 were inhumations (containing 50 individuals)
covering 78%, and 13 were cremations (14 individuals), cpvering 22%. Two double burials
were discovered, a cremation (Gr.35) and an inhumation (Gr.42). Bone fragments from
two inhumed individuals - Gr.3A and Gr.3B, were found in association with a cremation
burial whose remains were placed in an urn (Gr.3C). Both Gr.15 and Gr.54 were strongly
disrupted, some bone fragments were recovered from recent features (pits). Thus, the total
number of individuals was 64.
All the inhumed skeletons were lying on the pit floor in a contracted position. With few
exceptions, they were placed laterally on both the right and left sides, with the legs flexed and
the arms bent and brought towards the face. The skull was set to the side, facing north or south,
but also east when the head was pointing north. The lower limbs were flexed to 70-90°, but in
some cases they were strongly contracted, with the tibiae and fibulae close to the femurs. At
least two individuals were found lying supine with the legs bent and tumbled to one side. The
situations from Gr.2 and Gr.42B, when an arm was stretched out along the body, were atypical.
The orientation was established for 36 skeletons, out of which 19 were placed with
the head towards the east and 14 towards the west, only three individuals were oriented on
a north-south direction. In some cases modem works disturbed the burials and rendered
observations regarding the position and orientation of the deceased impossible. The
orientation towards the west may indicate the preservation of Monteom traditions, even
though the burials from the Tru§e§ti cemetery, assigned to the Noua culture, had the same
direction. The Monteom burials from Carlomane§ti were also oriented towards the west.
Cimitirul din Epoca Bronzului de la Câmpina (jud. Prahova) | 203
After a comprehensive analysis of the cemetery in Campina, several rules dictating
the relation between grave orientation, position and the sex group of the individuals were
noted. Thus, when the dead were oriented towards the east they were laid to the left or right
side according to their gender. This custom applied to both adults and subadults, as proven by
the results of the anthropological determination of sex (where it was possible) for some of the
child burials which showed that the young girls were placed to the same side as adult females,
while the boys had the same position as the adult males. The rule was not noticeable for the
graves oriented towards the west. The children were mainly placed to the left side, except for
four cases which were to the right. The women were mainly disposed to the left side, while
men were to the right side.
For cremations the burial custom involved the following steps: a small pit was dug
(0.10-0.30 m), or even a hollow, and its floor was sometimes lined with stones. Some of the
pit bottoms reached a maximum depth of -0.60 m from the present surface, but the average
depth was of -0.40 m. In these pits or even on the ancient ground, small cists were built from
stones placed on their edge. Some of the pits had their walls lined with stones and inside
them the burnt remains were placed directly on the stones/ground and/or in pots. The burial
was followed by a mound construction.
These stone structures were rectangular as in Gr.8 and Gr.ll, circular as in Gr.21, or
oval shaped as in Gr.36, Gr.38, Gr.48, Gr.59. The stone arrangement of Gr.21 may be included
in the ring category. Gr.36 was marked by an oval shaped stone ring within which 3 pots were
found, while Gr.48 had a similar but smaller structure, containing the lower half of an
amphora-like pot. The stones used for these constructions were generally middle-sized (0.10 -
0.30X0.10 - 0.15 m) and their diameters were as follows: 0.60X0.45 m for Gr.59,0.80x0.60 m
for Gr.36, 0.60x0.40 m for Gr.48 and 0.65m for Gr.21. Gr.35 and Gr.38 also had stone
arrangements, but they were strongly dismpted by modem works. Circular or oval structures
were mainly found in cremation burials and they required smaller spaces than the inhumations.
As for the pots/burial ums, they were either placed on a stone bed or otherwise small
circular hollows (3-4 cm) fitting the dimensions of the pot bottoms (as in Gr.27 and Gr.29),
were dug in order to fix them. A mound of stone and earth was raised over the bones and
vessels. The burial structures occupied a relatively small surface, 0.60x0.60 m or even less,
except for Gr.27 which was about 1.10x0.80 m, but had no special arrangement.
In cremation burials human bones were found both in pots and outside them. When the
grave did not contain funeral ums, the bones were placed directly on the ground or stones, in
pits not deeper than 20 cm. The vessels were placed side by side, slightly scattered in Gr.27. In
each of Gr.ll, Gr.14, Gr.27, Gr.36 along with other containers, there was a pot placed
upside down that covered cremated human bones. In Gr.14 a bitruncated bowl was placed
upside-down (as a lid) over a similar, but slightly smaller, bowl. In cremation burials only
bowls without decorations were placed upside-down as lids, except for Gr.36 where it was
a jug that had this function. In each of Gr.ll, Gr.14, Gr.27, Gr.36 cremated human bones
coming from one individual were disposed of in several vessels. An exceptional situation was
found in Gr.35 where two pots/ums contained separately the cremated remains of two
individuals, an adult and a subadult.

In the Cāmpina cemetery the typology and quantity of grave inventories were not
spectacular. The pots, ornaments, tools and weapons found in burials were made from raw
materials such as clay, bronze, silver, amber, bone, glassy paste, flint. Pottery has the highest
frequency among grave goods, followed by ornaments made of bronze, bone, clay, glassy
paste, amber, silver. We also mention the occurrence of a fragmentary needle/bone extremity.
Two flint pieces come from Gr.49 and Gr.14. In Gr.30 thirty processed ovicaprid astragali
were discovered. Nine of the burials contained animal bones resulting from offerings.
None of the inhumation burials contained more than two pots, while cremations had
richer inventories, generally comprised of 3-4 vessels. There were graves without inventories,
however, in some of them ceramic fragments were found in the mounds, grave fills or even
next to skeletons.
The relation between grave inventories and the age/sex groups of the individuals are
indicative, for the most part, of constant practices reflecting segments of the burial
standard. It is noteworthy that most of the child burials were accompanied by cups or
kantharos pots. These vessels occured in male and female burials, mainly in inhumations,
very rarely in cremations. Metal pieces (bronze) accompanied females and a child burial,
while bone items were found in every group. Beads made of glass, clay and amber were
discovered only in female graves.
The skeletal sample consisted of 62 skeletons and isolated remains from two
individuals. Sex distribution is as follows: 20 females (three of them were cremated), 22
males (eight cremations), 20 indeterminates (two cremations). It should be mentioned the
existence of a certain balance between male (35.48%) and female burials (32.26%), as well
as the relatively large number of individuals whose sex group could not be identified (20
individuals - 32.26%). The height was calculated using the maximum length of the femur,
for females it is of 152,96 cm (five cases) and for males 165,29 cm (eight cases). From the
analysed sample 29 skeletons show pathological conditions: 7 subadults and 22 adults, out of
which 8 were females and 14 males. This covers 46.77% of the total number of individuals, a
percentage that was constant throughout the archaeological excavations.
A demographic analysis was performed on the data from 63 skeletons (44 adults
and 19 subadults). The average age at death was calculated for each gender as follows:
28.28 years for females, 32.14 years for males and 17.26 years for indeterminates; the
average age for the entire sample is of 26.17 years. The life expectancy at birth was of
27.10 years and the death rate was of 3.69 per hundred. It must be mentioned that the
analysis was conducted on a small skeletal sample, that there were no individuals older
than 55 years and that in many cases the age estimates indicated large intervals because of
less well-represented individuals.
Absolute age definitions and relative chronology markers referred the evolution
of this burial site back to the Late Bronze Age (XV-XII centuries BC). The relative
chronology markers are represented by inventories, burial rites and rituals, grave
structures, etc. The chronological interval is culturally characterised by the evolution of
Noua ֊ Coslogeni communities in the Lower Danube area and the persistence of late
Monteoru communitiesTraditions in northern Wallachia. The dates for Cāmpina indicate
their contemporaneity with the ones obtained for Mahala, Crasnaleuca, Odaia Miciurin,
Cimitirul din Epoca Bronzului de la Câmpina (jud. Prahova) | 205
all of them assigned to the Noua cultural horizon. Relative chronology markers such as
grave goods, also point to a connection with the end of the Tei and Monteoru cultures.
We mention that the handles of certain pots had small prominences that may be related to
Noua pottery influences, even though some of these vessels displayed decorations typical
of Late Monteoru phases. The kantharos pot decorated by succesive stitches from Gr.2 is
to be found in the Fundeni phase of the Tei culture pottery, but also in the ceramic
repertoire of the Fundenii Doamnei cultural group.
Starting from typological criteria (the shape and decoration of pots), the pottery
found in the cemetery from Campina raises several social, anthropological and cultural
questions. The same pot displayed typological characteristics and decoration techniques
specific to distinct cultural manifestations. Interpretations range between cultural contacts,
synthesis processes and cultural interferences, the preservation and transmission of
traditions, the coexistence of various cultural horizons, etc. The occurence within the same
cemetery of materials assigned to Tei, Monteoru and Noua cultures could indicate several
situations including cultural imports, mixed communities or populations that had access to
a wide range of traditions, beyond their traditional cultural boundaries, it is unlikely that
this was a case of overlapping cemeteries. A thorough analysis of the internal evolution of
this cemetery could provide proper answers. The oldest graves from this cemetery display
Monteoru and Tei cultural characteristics, while towards the end of its evolution the Noua
cultural elements are gradually more pronounced, even though some of the Monteoru
traditions were still preserved. It should be mentioned that certain features of the Noua
pottery, such as the prominences on the handles, shapes and decoration, had a noticeable
influence on the Monteoru ceramics from this cemetery. The graves assigned to the Noua
culture according to their chronology and inventory still display certain Monteoru
traditions such as burial structures, rites and rituals, grave goods - especially ornaments
which are rare findings in the Noua culture. Radiocarbon dates indicate that in this area
some elements and cultural traditions were preserved beyond what was considered the final
chronological limit of evolution for certain manifestations specific to the Bronze Age.
