INVASION OF KOSOVA BY SERBIA AND
MONTENEGRO 1912-1915 HALVING OF
ALBANIA
Resume
The years 1912-1915 among people in the invaded
territories are known as a time of the rule of first Serbia. It
was the most difficult and bloody period during almost
entire history of Albanian population of this region. So, the
largest part of Albanian population experienced very bitter
disappointments. Exactly when it seemed that in the su-
mmer of 1912 the freedom will see its dawn, entire Albani-
an territories during the autumn of that year were une-
xpectedly involved in the storm of First World War that
brought spin minding devastations, economic misery, till
then unseen and unheard oppression and captivity, stri-
pping Albanian population from all elementary human
rights.
So, the Alliance of four Balkan states had created the
dark historical perspective for Albanians. Its consequence
were First World War, Conference of Ambassadors in
London, held from December 17, 1912 till August 12,
1913 which for Albanians were a big centennial crime and

injustice; they were events that caused a shocking blood
shed.
Serbian and Montenegrin invaders used the darkest
existing ways and methods in the earth particularly against
Albanians: macabre massacres, skinning and burning alive,
crucifixion in trees, hanging, burying alive, execution of
men, women and boys in their best age, executions and
burning of children and elder persons, raping of Albanian
women and girls, burning villages and towns, internment
of entire families inside Serbia and Montenegro, intern-
ments and kidnappings of prominent personalities and fa-
milies, colonization, assimilation, expropriation, cruel dis-
armament, forceful change of religion, wounding, may-
hem, imprisonment, threatening, and robbery etc. It means
namely to destroy everything that was Albanian. All these
draconian measures caused millions to take a refuge from
their millennia ethnic territories to different states and
continents — in four sides of the world, around 150.000 ki-
lled, hundreds and thousands wounded, tens of thousands
Albanians missing without a trace etc. The aim was: full
extermination of a nation. It could be said without doubt
that Serbians and Montenegrins hold a world record on
crimes and miseries made towards innocent and peaceful
Albanians. They aimed extinction of Albanians from geo-
graphic map — especially of northeastern part of occupied
Albania in the last months of 1912.
Various invading armies had ruled this part of Alba-
nia with fire and iron; they had also made those innu-
merable crimes, but differ greatly from those of Serbian
and Montenegrins barbarians. First ones exercised violence
to keep this Albanian land occupied, while Serbian and
Montenegrins had as an ultimate aim to assimilate and des-
troy Albanians. Fortunately, they didn’t achieve this goal
entirely, thanks to Albanian resistance and bravery, as well
as due to Albanian mother who gave birth to numerous

children in order to become embedded in the territory they

belonged. Thus, Serbian-Montenegrin history in Kosovo
is a history of cruel and genocide deeds upon Albanian po-
pulation. The time of Serbian and Montenegrin rule 1912-
1915 is most dramatic period of Albanian history of true
Kosovo.
However, it should be noted that “Serbs are masters
in covering and interpreting crimes and atrocities they have

done since their dawn”.
For Serbia, Albanian Kosovo was an ordinary colony
from 1912. So, in this side of Albanian border of 1913-s
groaned under slavery another wealthy Albania which was
envied greatly because of its underground and ground rich-
ness rare around the globe. Therefore, division of Albanian
nation in half caused immeasurable economic, politic,
geostrategic, psychological consequences etc.
Nowhere in Europe, neither did in the world happen
for a half of a nation, as was a case with Albanians of this
part of border, not to be recognized even as a minority, as
Serbia did. Thus, the cavalcade of suffering Albanians un-
der the jurisdiction of the Serbian-Montenegrin during
1912-1915, is one of the most tragic chapters in the history
of true Kosovo.
However, Albanian Kosovo could not endure new
transgressor. Even though during those years it had a
history full of pain and injuries, it had a remarkable cen-
tennial history of pride. Kosovo, with resistance, uprisings
and great sacrifices gave it a strong national mark. They
were the strongest bases for Albanians to be here and Ko-
sovo was and remained an invincible fortress of our people.

Although Serbia did its best by playing all stones of
diplomacy and enormity in order to capture Albanian terri-
tories. Thus Serbian and Montenegrin occupations were
much wilder, much more heartless, and much bloodier then
were previous invaders. In other words Serbians and Mon-
tenegrins were hundreds times wilder and unbearable.
Thus, because of those terrible measures that were under-
taken, there could be gained an impression that “Kosovo
Albanian population was the bravest population in the
world”.632 So, one of the active members of the Kosovo
National Defense Committee /Komiteti Mbrojtja Kombe-
tare e Kosoves would highlight: “Kosovo is the most vital
part of ethnic Albania. This fact was proved by time. Ser-
bia during two last centuries did everything possible in
order to make Kosovo Albanians vanish”.633 Therefore, it
could be ascertained that there were played tragic acts, too
painful parts of the history of our population in this part. It
was the most dramatic part of Kosovo Albanian history.
Rightfully will be concluded: there is no nation in
Europe to have endured so much suffering, but who had
fought that much for freedom and national rights and which
had been so much betrayed and massacred as was Kosovo
Albanian population and of the territories around. 634 Put it
bluntly: the Serbian-Montenegrin army during occupation
had shed in blood this half of Albania and many times
made it very difficult to survive. Therefore, there are lots of
indescribable individual and collective turmoil of Albani-
ans experienced from Serbians-Montenegrins, those cruel
enemies of Albanians, which many times had filled with
dead bodies of Albanians the waves of Drini, Sitnica, Ibri,

Llap, Morava, Lepenc, Vardar etc., blooded with Albanian
blood and washing the ashes of burnt houses from Serbian
and Montenegrin barbarisms.
So, in this part of Albania, Serbian and Montenegrin
soldiers and paramilitary forces did crimes which Europe
had never seen or heard since the penetration of Huns, Va-
ndals, and Avars and Genghis Khan.635 There is no nation
in Balkans, neither in Europe as are Albanians in this part
which had experienced genocide and tragedy from Ser-
bians and Montenegrins in the mentioned period. Thus,
there is no inch of this land that hasn’t been involved in
laments for the best fallen sons and daughters of our nation.
I think it would not be exaggeration if we conclude that no
nation in the world has been persecuted as were Albanians
under the occupation of Serbians and Montenegrins.
Serbian-Montenegrin army with disastrous terror tor-
ched Kosovo and other Albanian territories around, since
they made during last decades endeavors to create an Alba-
nia with its true national boundaries, whilst, the aim of
Serbia and Montenegro was the eradication of the idea of
the Albanian national liberation and unification. However,
neither large displacements of Albanians nor wars between
Serbians and Albanians did not achieve to prevent Albani-
ans from keeping chastity and peculiarities of their nati-
onality. Therefore, the history of this side of the nation is
an unbroken procession of bloody battles against violent
invaders. So, neither the worst cruelties didn’t achieve to
uproot this strong race.636 However, “Kosovo, this Alba-
nian land was punished by Great Powers to keep as a bur-
den a new occupation much bloodier then previous — the

Megalo - Serbian occupation” 637 It will be rightfully ascer-
tained that those tragic borders, the Conference of Amba-
ssadors in London, with the insistence and persistence of
Russia had been accepted even though they were never as
such in history. So, Serbia and Montenegro, with the help
of Russians and other allies of theirs created colonial bor-
ders by unseen crimes upon Albanians. It was the most
terrible wound which keeps leaking on terribly even in pre-
sent days.638
In this case it should be emphasized that from four
capitals of Albanian Vilayets - within recognized Albanian
state in the Conference of Ambassadors in London of 1913,
remained only Shkodra. Meanwhile, Shkupi, Manastir and
Janina remained outside Albania even 100 years later.
Needless to say surely it has its symbolism that only 1/3 of
the territory and of Albanian population was recognized as
an independent state. Therefore, ethnic Kosovo with 44.000
km2, for centuries has gone from war to war in order to ga-
in legitimate national rights. Wars between Albanians Ser-
bians and Slavs are unbroken chain since 1877 to the
beginning of 21st century.
For only 48 years (1878-1926) Serbia, Montenegro
and Greece, with the help and bless of European Great
Powers have divided five times the territory of Albania
(twice on 1878, on 1913, on 1921 and on 1926). So, by not
solving rightfully and definitely the Albanian issue and
leaving it to hang on for more then 100 years, finds its guilt
in the decisions of European Great Powers in the Congress
of Berlin, Conference of London 1912-1913 etc. Thus, sin-
ce 1913 English minister of Foreign Affairs, Eduard Grei,
had declared: “We agree due to avoidance of the war, but

the history will criticize us”.639 However, there won’t be
even more then one year and the First World War begin.
Indeed, for Albanian issue London Conference was the
greatest international scandal.
We claim this because it is the right estimation of a
prominent Albanian historian, which ascertains: “Partitio-
ning of the Albanian lands has created a psychological and
spiritual stress on Albanian nation, which even currently
feels its heavy weight. It has cut centennial natural econo-
mic political, human, spiritual, cultural connections bet-
ween organic parts of the nation, it has interrupted road of
communication, markets, and it has cut from fatherland the
most fertile agricultural areas, by making seriously more
difficult the progress of Albania. Defense positions of Al-
banian nation have been heavily damaged and Albania’s
ability for self defense was halved, ruining the equilibrium
that history of hinnan development for centuries had crea-
ted in Balkans”.640
However, if Serbia for 3-4% of its minority makes so
much fuss, it was quite normal that Albania of 1913 was
interested and worked much more for its lands with over
95% of Albanian autochthonous population of same blood,
language and history, which were cut unrightfully during
1878-1880, 1913 etc., and not loose the national energy in
quarrels between themselves.
T should be emphasized that Albanians, since that
time, with their letters and memorandums acknowledged
Western European countries that they were the single
supporters against Russian hegemonic plans in Balkans and
because of that they required that support. This Albanian
offer, although having risks, since it made Russians and
Slavs even more firmly against them, nevertheless was the

only card which could be used that time, and as such
remained in game even later641, and obviously until present
days, and even for long into future.
It should be reminded that the Albanian people and
its legitimate leaders never agreed with the decisions of the
European Great Powere in the Treaty of St. Stefan, Con-
gress of Berlin, and Conference of Ambassadors in Lon-
don. However, since 1877 violence and genocide upon Al-
banian people of Kosovo and present time Northwest Ma-
cedonia by Serbian-Slavs never stopped, since it is known
that always during the history in Belgrade were discussed
and approved platforms with deadly ideas and extermina-
tion programs towards neighboring nations, especially aga-
inst Albanian nation.
Indeed, years 1912-1915 were a not only period of
crises for Balkans and Europe but also years of crises for
world wide. Viewed from time aspect, the period from
1912-1915 seems to be a short time, but in fact from the
aspect of the events it is one of the most vigorous periods
of history in this peninsula, when each month, week and
day happened quite events, unfortunately very painful,
especially for our nation. Thus, the greatest number of tho-
se events requires special treatment and further insight.
Historical facts are stubborn. The end of the year 1912 till
1915 is the bloodier period in the history of this enslaved
half of Albania.
So, the issue of ex-Vilayet of Kosovo, which before
the Congress of Berlin in 1878, had around 44.000 km2, is
never silent without solving in right way our national issue
in Balkans, since in the history is said that imposed agree-
ments and unstable peace cause wars.

Even with the Declaring of Independence of Albania
on November 28 1912, being by now our most important
national date in our history, Albanian issue is not closed,
since it waits even in present days it definite and right
solution, after 100 years. Our wounds and suffering will be
healed only when complete national independence will be
recognized.
It should be known that no part of our population
will have peace without being realized the dream of all
Albanian patriots ֊ reunification of our nation in total.
To conclude that the Congress of Berlin 1878 Amba-
ssadors in London 1912-1913 have messed up badly issues
of Balkans-respectively of Illyria. They have never ensured
peace in Albanian historic and ethnic territories. Even in
present days, despite the Declaration of the Independence
of such truncated Kosovo on February 17th 2008, we think
there is beginning a new era with the perspective for Al-
banian nation. Therefore, undoubtedly we could claim: un-
til the central problem of this peninsula is not solved
rightfully — the Albanian issue, there will never be peace in
Albanian territories which experienced terrible tragedies of
division and being halved.
