adam_text | Summary
The first volume with the materials of more
than twenty-year excavations on the territory
of a medieval cemetery near the village of Luchistoye,
Alushta city council, was published in Russian in
2008 [Aibabin, Khairedinova 2008], the volume with
identical text in German and 13 additional tables of
colour photographs - in 2009 [Aibabin, Khairedi-
nova 2009]. New materials from vaults and graves
NN 43 - 80 excavated on the territory of a medieval
cemetery near the village of Luchistoye, Alushta city
council, in 1984, 1986, 1991, 1993-1995 were pub-
lished in the second volume. As a result of compre-
hensive analysis of the inventory of vaults and graves
included in the volume the authors supplemented
or specified the typology of items presented in the
first volume that are chronological indicators. Spe-
cial features of the construction of the named burial
construction are characterized in the catalogue, their
plans and stratigraphic sections are given; relative
and absolute chronology of each group of simultane-
ously closed complexes is substantiated.
As it had already been mentioned in the first vol-
ume the chronology of published burial construc-
tions was based on the analysis of mutual frequency
of occurrence of the things of the same type retrieved
from the burials. We would remind that dating of
each chronological group is based not on separate
finds but on reiterated mutual frequency of series of
the things of the same type in closed complexes and
stratigraphy of burials in multilayer vaults. Relative
periodization of each simultaneous group of closed
complexes was determined in accordance with the lo-
cation of burials in every multilayer vault on the floor
of a chamber or on the surface of a layer.
Stratigraphy of Burials in Multilayer Vaults
Vault 43 (Fig. 1; tables 1-16; 209-212) was dug out
at the turn of the 6th -7th centuries. Just at this time
two adults (7, 9) were buried at the north-western
wall of the chamber; a fragment of red clay ampho-
ra of class 1 according to Chersonesos classification
(Fig. 1,7) dating back to the end of the 6th - the first
quarter of the 7th centuries and a footwear buckle of
type 1-7 (Fig. 1,3) of the second half of the 6th - the
first half of the 7th centuries were found together with
them. Later - during the first half of the 7tfl century -
in the north-eastern part of the chamber they buried
a child (10) with a bronze one-piece-cast buckle of
type II-10 (type «Gater») dating to the first half of
the 7th century (Fig. 1, 7), an adolescent (6) and two
adults (5 and 8) with buckles of «Syracuse» type (Fig.
1,12,13,14) and a bone cover plate on a bag dating
to the 7th century (Fig. 1,9). By the mid-7th century
the floor of the chamber was occupied by the buri-
als. In the third quarter of the 7th century, powder-
ing the lower layer of the burials with dark ground,
in the center of the chamber they buried a woman
(4) with an eagle-headed buckle of variant 4 dating
to the second half of the 7th century (Fig. 1,16). After
a short period - in the last quarter of the 7th century,
covering a female burial 4 with a thin layer of ground,
in the central part of the vault a woman (1), an ado-
lescent (3) and a child (2) were buried with buckles
of «Syracuse» type (Fig. 1, 24, 26, 27) and details of
footwear sets dating to the 7th century. After that the
vault was not used.
Vault 44 (Fig. 5; 17-20; 212, 11) was dug out in
the second half of the 8th century. Just at that time
iZJSJRJ EWMZJEJZJZJZJ 1133
anthropomorphic deepening was dug out in the floor
of the chamber where they buried an adult (2) with
a bronze tongue typical for Saltovo buckles being in
use in Crimea in the second half of the 8th ֊ 9 centu-
ries (Fig. 5,16). Later, in the 9th century, at the entrance
to the chamber of the vault woman 1 was buried with
a bronze earring characteristic for the second half
of the 9th - 10th centuries (Fig. 5,18).
Vault 46 covered the chamber of vault 46a
(table 22) which was dug out lower on the slope.
Thereafter, the arch in the latter chamber collapsed,
the chamber of vault 46 completely subsided. Burials
of the lower layer in vault 46 were separated from the
burials on the floor of chamber 46a by 0,3-0,4 m layer
of dense mainland soil.
Vault 46 (Fig. 2; tables 22-28) was dug out in the
first half of the 7th century. Just then two adults (10,11)
were buried on the floor of the chamber with a thread
of beads from the stem of a wine green glass of type 1
(according to L.A. Golofast) (Fig. 2, 16), in Cher-
son they were found in complexes dating to the first
and last quarters of the 7th century, and with an iron
buckle of the 6th ֊ the first half of the 7th centuries
(Fig. 2, 17; tables 28, 8). In the second half of the
7th century, having powdered those who were buri-
ed on the floor with a thin layer of soil, in the south-
eastern part of the chamber of the vault they buried
two adults (8, 9) with earrings of the 7th century
(Fig. 2, 18,19) and the end of the 7th - 9th centuries
(Fig. 2,20); at the beginning of the 8th century at the
entrance to the chamber a woman (7) was buried
with a glass lunar pendant of the 8th - 9th century
(Fig. 2, 21). Later, during the 8th century, over them
five more people were buried in the vault (2-6). In the
9th century the last burial (1) with bronze earrings of
the end of the 7th - 9th centuries (Fig. 2,23,24) was
accomplished.
Vault 46a (Fig. 2; tables 22,29-41; 209; 213-215)
was dug out in the 5th century. Several burials were
performed at that time; only things were preserved:
a round buckle with a corrugated frame (Fig. 2, 5)
dating to the first half of the 5th century; a buckle
with an oval frame dating to the second half of the
5th - 6th centuries (Fig. 2,4); two hand-made vessels
(Fig. 2,1,3) and fragments of a glass with blue drops
dating to the first half of the 5th century (Fig. 2, 2).
In the 6th century decayed remnants of the burials
of the previous century together with the equipment
were shifted to the eastern wall of the chamber and in
the north-eastern part four adults (1-3,8) were buri-
ed with an iron sickle (Fig. 2. 6) and a broad sword
(Fig. 2,7) similar to those found in Luchistoye in buri-
als of the second half of the 6th - the first quarter of
the 7th centuries. At the beginning of the 7th centu-
ry two adults and a baby (4,6,7) were buried in the
south-western corner of the chamber. Female burial 5
became the last one in this chamber; it was performed
not later than in the first quarter of the 7th century.
In burials 4 and 5 large eagle-headed buckles were
found; they belonged to variant 2 and are dated
back to the end of the 6th - the first quarter of the
7th centuries (Fig. 2,9,15).
Vault 54/54a (Fig. 3; tables 46-80; 217-225)
was used twice: in the first half of the 5th century
and in the end of the 6th - 8th centuries. Four layers
with twenty two burials were revealed in vault 54
(Fig. 3,1-41). They began to bury in vault 54 at the
end of the 6th century. After covering of remnants
of burials dating back to the first half of the 5th cen-
tury with dark ground an adult 22 was buried near
the north-eastern part of the wall in the chamber of
the vault with an iron B֊shaped buckle of type 1-2
(Fig. 3, 40) dating to the second half of the
6th-7th centuries. In the first quarter of the 7th century
in the same place after covering of the remnants of
burial 22 an adult 21 was buried with a buckle of
«Syracuse» type of the 7th century (Fig. 3, 37); and
near the south-western side an adult 14 was buried
with a buckle of the same type (Fig. 3,33) and a child
13 was buried with bronze radiate-headed fibulas of
the Dnieper circle of type I dating to the 7th century
(Fig. 3, 32). Later, in the second quarter of the
7th century, in the eastern part of the chamber of
the vault two males (15 and 18) were buried with a
buckle of «Syracuse» type (Fig. 3, 23) and a child
(20) was buried with radiate-headed fibulas, one of
them belonged the Dnieper stock of type I dating to
the 7th century (3,30,31); man 18 was put over buri-
ed 21. In the mid-7th century in the southern corner
of the chamber child 16 was buried with bronze cast
fibulas: anthropomorphous-zoomorphic multi-head-
ed of type 1-1 (Fig. 3, 20) and of the Dnieper stock
of type III with a border of birds’ heads (Fig. 3, 19).
The last ones who were buried in layer 3 in the
second half of the 7th century were three adults ֊11,
12,19 and a child 17. The remains of earlier burial 13
134 EJHJzmjzrarajHjEranuHj
were shifted and one radiate-headed fibula was put
on skeleton 16. To clear the place for burial 19 skele-
tons 15 and 18 were partially taken apart. In burials
11 and 12 there were large eagle-headed buckles of
variant 4 dating to the second half of the 7th century
(Fig. 3,11,14). In the end of the 7th ֊ the first half of
the 8th centuries, having covered the burials of layer
3 with dark ground, they buried four adults (7-10)
and a child (7a) with a pivot-hinged buckle of Cor-
inth type, variant 9-1 of the end of the 7th - the first
half of the 8th centuries (Fig. 3,9) and a synchronous
cast buckle with an oval ring of variant II-5 with a slit
trefoil on the plate (Fig. 3,7). In the second half of the
8th century in the vault there were performed last
burials (1-6) with a unit-cast Saltovo buckle of type
II-1 of the second half of the 8th - the 9th centuries
(Fig. 3, 2) and a pivot-hinged buckle of «Corinth»
type, variant 9-2 of the second half of the 8th - the
beginning of the 9th centuries (Fig. 3,3).
In vault 54 unusual specimens of radiate-headed
fibulas were found. Fibulas from burial 13 (Fig. 3,32;
table 220) were considerably thicker, made crudely
and carelessly. One of them was defective - its back
was cast with a lacuna (Table 220, 11). This find
enables us to speak about an attempt to manufac-
ture radiate-headed fibulas of this type by the locals
[Aibabin 1990, p. 25]. A bronze radiate-headed fibula
(Fig. 3, 30; tables 70, 5; 222, 1) from burial 20 is of
a particular interest; there is a combination of dis-
torted motifs I of Scandinavian animalistic style and
elements of decor of Ost-Gothian products in its
decoration [Aibabin 1990, p. 24-25; Aibabin 1999,
p. 158; Ajbabin 2011, S. 138, Abb. 68,4; 70]. Its rhom-
bus stem is covered with scrolls and a dot in the center
and stylized figures of animals are depicted on a part
adjoining to the back. Both motifs are also present
on fibulas of the first half of the 7th century from
Luchistoye, from vault 36 [Aibabin, Khairedinova
2008, tables 118, 6; 119, 5; 192; 193]. Decor on the
head and back of fibulas copies the elements of de-
cor on fibulas of Aquileia/Udine-Planis type existing
in Crimea in the second half of the 6th-7th centuries
[Aibabin 1999, p. 271, fig. 43,3; tables XXVIII, 11].
Lets pay attention to an eagle-headed buckle from
burial 12 (Fig. 3,14). Marks of being in long use are
seen on it: the surface of the buckle plate is worn out;
ornament is rubbed in some places. Most probably,
the buckle was manufactured at the beginning of the
7th century. Its frame, tongue and plate are identi-
cal to eagle-headed buckles of variant 2 in size and
décor. The buckle was repaired not once. The broken
back of the frame was substituted with a bronze rod.
The repair was doing during the second half of the
7th century: old details were connected with a plate
which length conformed to joining plates of buckle of
variant 4 used in that period.
Equipment characteristic for complexes of the
first half of the 5th century was revealed in vault 54a:
round buckles of variant 3 (Fig. 3, 42, 43, 45, 46);
a buckle with a massive round hoop and tongue
decorated with the imitation of animals head of
variant 8-2 (Fig. 3,44); a red clay amphora with a cy-
lindrical corrugated body finishing with a small foot
(Fig. 3,53); a red slip dish of ARSW 62B (Fig. 3, 52);
a glass jug with a profiled handle with a scroll over
a massive rim (Fig. 3,47).
Vault 59 (Fig. 4; tables 93-107) was dug out at
the very beginning of the 7th century. At that time
an adult 21 was buried on the floor of the chamber
with an iron trapezoid buckle similar to those which
appeared at the very beginning of the 7th century
(Fig. 4,10). Then during the first quarter four adults
(16, 17, 19, 20) and a child (18) were buried in the
vault. In burial 19 there were radiate-headed fibu-
las with concentric rhombs on the foot of variant
2/2 (Fig. 4, 3,4) of the end of the 6th - the first half
of the 7th centuries. In the second quarter of the
7th century two adults (12,15) and two children (13,
14) were buried in the central part of the vault with
a buckle of «Syracuse» type dating to the 7th century
(Fig. 4,10). To clear the place for these burials the re-
mains of burials 18 and 19 were shifted to the eastern
wall of the chamber, and bones of skeleton 16 - to the
northern wall. In the second half of the 7th century
having covered the remains of burials of layer 2 with
a thin layer of dark ground they buried three people
(8,9,10) in the vault. At the end of the 7th - the begin-
ning of the 8th centuries having shifted the remnants
of these three buried to the walls of the chamber in
the central part of the vault they buried a woman (7)
with a unit cast buckle of variant II3-3 of the first half
of the 8th century (Fig. 4,19) and a child (11) with
a buckle of «Syracuse» type of the 7th century
(Fig. 4,20). In the 8th century three adults (3,4,6) and
a child (5) were buried in the vault. At first adult 4
was buried; afterwards man 3 was put over him; the
last who were buried in layer 2 were a woman (6)
with a unit cast buckle with an oval frame of 11-12
type of the second half of the 8th century (Fig. 4,21)
and a child (5). The latest buried in the vault were two
adults (1 and 2) with earrings dating back to the se-
cond half of the 8th-9th centuries (Fig. 4, 23); the
burial took place at the end of the 8th ֊ the beginning
of the 9th centuries
Vault 61 (Tables 109-114; 230) was dug out in the
second half of the 7th century. Originally three adults
(3,4, 5) were buried on the floor. The last one in the
layer, at the end of the 7th century, was a woman (2)
with a unit cast buckle of II-5 type with a slit trefoil
on the plate of the end of the 7th - the first half of the
8th centuries (Fig. 5,12; tables 114,3). Later, already in
the first half of the 8th century, after covering the re-
mains of people buried on the floor with a thin layer
of dark ground, near the eastern wall of the chamber,
an adult (1) with a red clay oinochoe (Fig. 5,13) was
buried. Later the vault was not used.
Vault 65 (Fig. 6; tables 125-150; 233-236) was
dug out in the first quarter of the 7th century. Origi-
nally on the floor of the chamber some burials were
performed: 6 with a pair of radiate-headed fibu-
las of Kerch type (Fig. 6, 3) and a large buckle with
a rectangular plate of variant 6 dating to the second
half of the 6“ - the first half of the 7th centuries
(Fig. 6,4), 7 - with two bronze buckles of II4-5 type
of the second half of the 6th - the first half of the
7th centuries (Fig. 6, 2) and «Syracuse» type of the
7th century (Fig. 6, 1) and 11. Then in the western
part of the chamber of the vault they buried adults:
3 with a zoomorphic bi-headed fibula of II-1 type
(Fig. 6,6), 9 and 5, and in the eastern part over skele-
ton 6 - two adults: 10 ֊ with a buckle with a B-shaped
faceted frame II-1 type of the second half of the
6th - the third quarter of the 7th centuries (Fig.6,
11) and a belt set of the first quarter of the 7th cen-
tury (Fig. 6,9,10) and 8 - with bronze buckles of the
7th century (Fig. 6, 7, 8). The remains of buried 7
and 11 were shifted to the walls of the chamber. Later,
already in the second quarter of the 7th century, an
adult 4 was buried with a buckle of a trapezoid frame
of variant 1-6 of the second quarter of the 7th century
(Fig. 6,16) and details of a belt set of type III of the
7th century (Fig. 6,17); his body was put over the re-
mains of burials 5 and 9. The last who were buried in
lay 1 in about the mid-7th century were children 12-15,
whose bodies were put across buried 10. In burial 12
a bracelet with lamella ends (Fig. 6,20) of the first half
of the 7th century and a buckle with an oval frame
(Fig. 6, 19) characteristic for the 6th - the first half
of the 7th centuries were found; in burial 13 a solid
buckle (Fig. 6, 22) in form close to B-shaped buck-
les with a heraldic plate of II4-5 (Fig. 6, 2) type was
found. In the second half of the 7th century after
covering the buried on the floor with a layer of dark
ground, in the centre of the chamber of the vault
a woman (2) and a child (1) were buried. In burial 1
three fibulas were found; one of them belonged to
the Dnieper stock of type III with a border of birds’
heads of the 7th century (Fig. 6,31). Two other fibulas
were unique. One of them (Fig. 6,30) imitates fasten-
ers of the Dnieper stock of type III. The border from
birds’ heads on it reproduces birds’ heads is outlined
with the help of round holes along the edge and small
accurate notches along the very edges. The form of
the leg is presented carelessly. The second fibula
copies zoomorphic bi-headed fasteners of type II-1,
found in the published vault, in burial 3 on the floor
(Fig. 6, 6), and in Luchistoye, vault 38, in burial 8
dating back to the first quarter of the 7th century
[Aibabin, Khairedinova 2008, Fig. 12,13; tables 139,2]
and in Suuk-Su, in vault 131, in burial with an eagle-
headed buckle of variant 4 of the second half of the
7th century [Repnikov 1907, p. 11-112, fig. 131,133;
Aibabin 1990, fig. 13,8; Aibabin, Khairedinova 2008,
fig. 12,42]. In burial 2 there were revealed two bronze
radiate-headed fibulas of the Dnieper stock of type I
of the 7th century (Fig. 6, 34), a buckle with an oval
frame of variant 112 with a trapezoid plate (Fig. 6,32)
of the second half of the 7th century and a badge with
a figure of a man inside (Fig. 6,33) similar to the one
found in Luchistoye, in vault 113, in burial 13 with an
eagle-headed buckle of variant 2 of the first quarter of
the 7th century.
Vault 66 (Fig. 7; tables 109; 151-154; 236) was
dug out in the second half of the 5th century. At the
same time on the floor of the chamber of the vault
a woman 3 with a round buckle (Fig. 7, 11) was
buried; this buckle was similar to those found in com-
plexes of the period 7T3 (450-460/480-490) from the
Danube region. At the turn of the 5th-6th centuries
an adult 2 was buried with an iron cover plate on a
bag or a fire lighter of the 6th - the beginning of the
7th century (Fig. 7, 15) having covered the remains
136 rajHJZJzranmHmzwj
of burial 3. The last one buried was a man 1, most
probably in the first half of the 6th century.
In vault 73 an earthenware red clay jug
(Fig. 5,20) of the second half of the 8th - 9th century
(tables 160-163; 237) was found.
In vault 80 four layers with turned over remains
of burials (Tables 200, 202-208; 249, 3-14) were
revealed. In layer 1 bronze earrings (Tables 204,
4,5; 249, 3) dating back to the end of the 7th - the
beginning of the 8th century were discovered.
The most significant for dating burials of layer 2
were a buckle of “Syracuse” type dating to the
7th century (Table 206, 5) and a belt tip of variant
1-3 of the 7th century. In layer 3 several thing were
found: a buckle of type II4-2 with a B-shaped frame
(Table 208,10) dating to the second half of the 6th -
the first half of the 7th century; a silver buckle with
faceted square frame (Tables 208, 11; 249, 11) of
the first half of the 5th century; an iron dagger with
notches on the blade (Table 208,14), similar to those
in use in the South-Western Crimea in the second
half of the 4th - the first half of the 5th centuries.
In layer 4 there was a silver buckle with a round
frame of variant 3 (Tables 208, 15; 249, 12) dating
to the last quarter of the 4th - 5th centuries.
Dating of Burials in Monolayer Vaults
In vault 47 a red clay flat bottomed mug of
the 8th - 9th centuries (Fig. 5,19) was found.
In vaults 52,55,58 things characteristic for com-
plexes of the fourth chronological group of early me-
dieval antiquities of the Crimea dated by the first half
of the 5th century were found: a red slip dish of type
ARSW 62B (Fig. 8, 12); a glass of Sorokin I-B type
(Fig. 8,10); hand-made burnished jugs with a relief
application in the form of a scroll under the han-
dle (Fig. 8, 21); oval and round buckles of variant 3
(Fig. 8,3,16); an oval buckle of variant 56 (Fig. 8,14);
a cast bi-plated fibula of variant 21/IIA (Fig. 8, 8);
two-piece fibula with returned footl5/III-l (Fig. 8,2);
a two-piece deflected fibula with a solid plate re-
ceiver (Fig. 8, 7); an iron fibula of variant 16-2/1-2-3
(Fig. 8,13).
Vault 64 was dug out in the second half of the
6th century. Just at this time they buried a woman (4)
with a large silver buckle with a rectangular frame
of variant 1-3 of the second half of the 6th century
(Fig. 9, 1) and a man (3) with a buckle with a rec-
tangular frame of type 1-1 (type «Suchidava») of
the second half of the 6th century (Fig. 9, 2) and
footwear set of type 3-2A (Fig. 9, 4, 5) of the end
of the 6th - the first half of the 7th centuries. At the
end of the 6th ֊ the first quarter of the 7th century
near the eastern wall of the chamber of the vault
they buried a woman (1) with bronze earrings with
a hollow polyhedron of variant 2 (Fig. 9,8,9) dating
to the end of the 6th - the first half of the 7th cen-
turies and a foot of a glass of first type 1 (according
to L.V. Golofast) (Fig. 9, 7) of the end of the 6th -
the third quarter of the 7th century, and near her
a man (2) was buried.
Vault 74 was dug out in the second half of the
6th century. The first buried in the western part of
the chamber was a man (1) with a B-shaped buckle
of type II-1 of the second half of the 6th - the third
quarter of the 7th century (Fig. 9,12) and a belt set
of the second part of the 6th century (Fig. 9, 9, 10)
and a woman (2) with an eagle-headed buckle of vari-
ant 1 of the second half of the 6th century (Fig. 9,14).
A bit later, at the end of the 6th - the first quarter of
the 7th centuries, in the eastern part of the chamber
of the vault synchronously or with a short interval
they buried a man (4) with a buckle with a B-shaped
frame of type II4-5 of the first half of the 7th century
(Fig. 9, 17), a woman (5) with a large buckle with
a rectangular plate of variant 6 of the second half of
the 6th ֊ the first half of the 7th century (Fig. 9,15)
and a child (3).
On the floor of the chamber of vault 75 the re-
mains of burials of two adults (1, 2) and two chil-
dren (3, 4) (Tables 176) with buckles of the second
half of the 5th century were cleaned out: an oval one
with a round plate (Fig. 7,4) similar to fasteners from
the Danube region from complexes of period
(430/440 - 470/480) and an iron oval one with a thick-
ened front side (Fig. 7, 6) in the form of the frame
close to fastener from Kerch, from vault 154, burial 2
of the second half of the 5th century.
On the floor of the chamber of vault 77 the re-
mains of burials of five adults (1,3-5,7) and two chil-
dren (2, 6) (Table 181) were cleaned out. A woman
(1) was the first to be buried near the eastern wall
of the chamber in the second half of the 6th century
with radiate-headed fibula of Aquileia/Udine-Planis
of variant 2 (Fig. 10, 3, 4) and a large silver buckle
(ZjHWJzreiararejBraa 137
with a rectangular plate of variant 5-2 (Fig. 10, 1).
Then, at the end of the 6th - the first quarter of
the 7th century, near the western wall of the cham-
ber a woman (7) was buried with the same kind of
a buckle (Fig. 10,7) and a pair of radiate-headed fibu-
las with concentric rhombs on the foot of variant 2/1
(Fig. 10, 8), a man (5) was buried with a trapezoid-
shaped buckle of variant II-2 (Fig. 10, 14) and
a B-shaped buckle of variant II-l (Fig. 10, 15),
and a child (6) was buried with radiate-headed fibu-
las with concentric rhombs on the foot of variant 2/1
(Fig. 10, 13) and with a buckle with a B-shaped
frame 1-3 type and a heraldic plate (Fig. 10, 11).
In the second quarter of the 7th century on the va-
cant place in the central part of the chamber three
adults - 3,4 were buried and there was a burial with-
out a number, only things were preserved. A girl (2)
was buried last, she was put over burial 1 with two
fibulas ֊ a bronze bi-plated (Fig. 10,24) and an iron
deflected one with a returned foot (Fig. 10, 25) and
with a bronze buckle (Fig. 10,23) that copied frames
of buckles being in use in the South-Western Crimea
in the second half of the 6th - 7th centuries.
Among the things which were confiscated from
robbers who destroyed vault 78 the most significant to
determine the period of using it were: gold triangular
pendant of the second half of the 6th - 7th centuries
(Fig. 5,1), a bronze ring decorated like bracelets being
in use in the South-Western Crimea during the whole
7th century (Fig. 5,2) and an iron buckle extended in
width trapezoid frame with small projections on the
back side (Fig. 5,4) similar to those widely spread in
the Crimea at the end of the 7th - the first half of the
8th centuries. Vault 78 was used most probably in the
7th - the first half of the 8th centuries.
In vault 79 remains of a woman (1), an adolescent
(2) and a child (3) were cleaned. A buckle of type 1-7,
with a trapezoid-shaped frame and a heraldic plate
from burial 1 (Fig. 11,14), is similar to footwear fas-
teners of the second half of the 6th - the first half of
the 7th centuries. A broad plated deflected fibula with
returned foot from the same burial (Fig. 11, 12) is
dated by the second half of the 6th - the first quarter
of the 7th centuries. Crosses of variant 3-2 (Fig. 11,11)
are similar to the one found in burial 3 being in use
in the second half of the 6th - the first quarter of the
7th centuries. Most probably, burials in vault 79 were
performed at the turn of the 6th-7th centuries.
Dating of Burials in Graves
In grave 49 fragments of two iron fibulas
(Fig. 11, 1,2) and a bronze oval buckles (Fig. 11, 3)
of the second half of the 6th - the first half of the
7th centuries were revealed; in grave 50 - a bronze
oval buckle (Fig. 11, 4; tables 43, 3) in form and
sizes similar to wire frames of footwear fasten-
ers of the 6th - the first half of the 7th centuries;
in grave 53 - a bronze buckle with a B-shaped frame
of type 1-3 with a heraldic plate of the 6th ֊ the first
half of the 7th centuries (Fig. 11,15). On the bottom of
grave 56 remains of a burial of an adult with a buck-
le with a trapezoid form of the frame of type I (Fig.
11, 19) of the second half of the 6th - 7th centuries
were cleaned out. In male burial from grave 57 iron
buckles with a trapezoid form of the frame (Fig, 5,7;
tables 88,1) and three belt loops (Fig. 5,6; tables 88,
2-4) copying silver or bronze belt details of the end of
the 7th - the first half of the 8th centuries. In grave 60
a bronze earring (Fig. 4,25) and a ceramic jug with
two handles (Fig. 4,26) being in use since the second
half of the 8th - 9th centuries were found. On the bot-
tom of grave 63 the remains of a child’s burial with
a silver buckle with a B-shaped frame of type 1-2 of
the 6th - the first half of the 7th century (Fig. 11, 8)
were cleaned. In grave 67 there was a large silver
buckle with a rectangular plate of variant 6 of the
second half of the 6th - the first half of the 7th cen-
turies (Fig. 11,18). In grave 68 a bronze solid buckle
was found; it was decorated with an openwork flo-
ral décor on a plate (Fig. 5,14; tables 156,1; 237, 2)
similar to Saltovo buckles of variant 1-7 of the sec-
ond half of the 8th century. On the bottom of grave
76 the remains of a burial of a man with iron buckles
(Fig. 7,18,19) characteristic for the first half of the
6th century were cleaned. In grave 80a two iron buck-
les with a round (Tables 201,2) and an oval frames
(Tables 201,3) characteristic for the 5th - the first half
of the 7th centuries were found.
Summary dating of burials in burial construc-
tions published in this volume is presented in figures
