Summary The aim of a popular science monograph entitled Professors from Lviv at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice , prepared by the Museum in Gliwice in cooperation with the Silesian University of Technology, is to remind biographies of selected former professors from Lviv, who made significant and crucial contribu tions to the organization and development of the Technical University in the first years after its foundation. The work consists of three parts: the general part, the part presenting the figure of the founder of the University, and the biographical section. In the general part there are two articles. The first one, entitled The community of Lviv Polytechnic , presents the history of the formation of the academic community in Lviv in the nineteenth century against the socio-political, economic and business background of Galicia in that period. We learn from it that, at that time, Lviv had four Polish universities of great importance not only for Galicia, but also for Poland after its rebirth in 1918. The Lviv intelligentsia, especially its distinguished representatives from the world of science, had great achievements of their own in diverse branch es of science. Moreover, they created their own schools in various fields, including humanities, medicine and engineering sciences. Special attention was given to the representatives of the scientific circles of the Lviv Polytechnic, emphasizing the cre ative work of mathematicians, physicists, chemists, engineers, architects and build ers. The monograph also describes the private life of the
scientific faculty. The next article, entitled The arrival of the Lviv faculty to Gliwice in the years 1945 and 1946 , outlines the circumstances of their arrival to our city. It should be emphasized that without these people it would have been possible to establish a new technical university in Gliwice. The second part of the monograph presents the founder and organizer of the university in an article entitled Władysław Kuczewski - the first rector of the Sile sian University of Technology . He is depicted in a separate chapter to emphasize the individuality of his person as the creator of the Polytechnic in Gliwice, its first rector and a person who still causes controversy. Other articles, collected in part three, present 16 selected biographies of Lviv scholars from the circle of technical and physical sciences - professors who re ceived their titles before the 1st of September 1939. They are also the people who had decisive influence on the scientific community of Gliwice in the early Streszczenie angielskie 485
years of the Silesian University of Technology. The criterion for selection of bio graphical works was for every person to have been granted professorship before the 1st of September 1939. That criterion allowed to select a group of 15 profes sors who received their titles from the hands of the Polish authorities, and one, Zygmunt Ciechanowski, received his professorial titles from the Austro-Hungari an authorities (in 1911 and 1913). Some of them worked at the university in Gliwice permanently, others only tem porarily. The foundation of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice was made possible owing to their passion and contributions. Over time, the University evolved into one of the most important centres of engineering in Poland. The biographical part of the monograph is alphabetically structured and reveals several divisions amongst the faculty. In the first division, determined by having a permanent contract with the University, fourteen professors were established for whom the school was the primary place of employment, as well as two professors supporting the University. Another division, this time by industry , allows to assign individual professors to several groups of specialization, such as chemists, engineers, builders, physicists, as well as specialists such as electricians, mathematicians and lawyers. All of them participated in organizational, administrative, and, of course, teaching activities. The largest, five-person group of Lviv professors participated in the creation of the Faculty of Chemistry. Three of them became permanently related to
the uni versity: Wiktor Jakób (1886-1971), Adolf Joszt (1889-1957) and Wacław Leśniański (1886-1956). Marian Kamieński (1901-1980) and Edward Suchard (1891-1947) also co-operated with that faculty. The first of them was employed at the Polytechnic Faculty of the University of Mining and the other worked on a permanent basis for the Union of the University and Technical University of Wroclaw, being also the vice-rector for the Technical University of Wroclaw. All of them participated in crea tion of the chemical laboratories at the University in Gliwice from the very beginning. The Faculty of Mechanics consisted of three professors from Lviv: Zygmunt Ciechanowski (1873-1966), Włodzimierz Burzyński (1900-1970) and Stanislaw Ochęduszko (1899-1969). They all participated in the creation of mechanical laboratories with great commitment, which required many resources and organizing skills. Włodzimierz Burzyński was the main contributor who helped to gather the equip ment for those laboratories. Moreover, three professors from Lviv became part of the primary staff of the Faculty of Engineering and Construction. Those were: Franciszek Wasilkowski (1897-1969), Władysław Derdacki (1882-1951) and Stanislaw Brzozowski (1889-1959). 486 Streszczenie angielskie
All three of them heavily engaged in the organization of the faculty, departments and the emergence of new construction specialities. Classes in physics at the departments of the Silesian University of Technology were taught by two well-known professors from Lviv: Tadeusz Malarski (1883-1952), and, since 1956, Zygmunt Klemensiewicz (1886-1963). The first of them contributed to the general physical laboratories and participated in organization of the Depart ment of Optics and Fine Mechanics, which also produced teaching aids and labora tory equipment for the University. The second professor, in addition to the organ izational activities, leading the chair, faculty and physical laboratory at the Faculty of Mechanics and Energy, contributed significantly to the creation of a speciality called „nuclear energy within that same faculty. Only one professor from Lviv, Stanislaw Fryzę (1885-1964), worked at the Fac ulty of Electrical Engineering. He was the creator of the Polish school of electri cal engineering. At the same time he participated in the reorganization of teach ing at the Faculty. Professor Eustachy Żyliński (1889-1954), previously associated with the University of Lviv, taught mathematics and focused on conducting classes in the Faculty of Engineering and Construction. He commuted to classes from Łódź. Antoni Wereszczyński (1878-1948), who lived in Kraków, taught legal science at the Silesian University of Technology. The Professors from Lviv mentioned above were related to the Silesian Universi ty of Technology in various years, mainly during the first
fifteen years of its existence. They not only participated in the organizational activities but also contributed to the high scientific and educational level of the University. They did their painstaking work and spared no time, although they were not always adequately recognized by the political authorities. Their attitude is all the more remarkable as the scientific community of Lviv suffered particularly heavy losses from both occupiers. In some cases the biographies of Lviv professors are new studies others are extended versions of previously known works. They were prepared by a team of au thors, most of whom are related to technical sciences in academic centres in Poland and abroad (see the list at the end of the book, along with their academic titles and places of work), as well as by historians of recent Polish history and the University in Gliwice.
