| adam_text | Reading and sharing books remains a significant activity for many people in
a digital age. Literary culture has become a form of popular culture over the
last fifteen years and opportunities to share reading with others have mul-
tiplied during an era of converged media and changing technologies. Mass
reading events, such as televised book clubs and community-wide reading
initiatives, are among the new cultural formations designed to attract, edu-
cate, and entertain groups of leisure readers. Based on extensive research,
including original interviews and surveys with readers and event organizers
in the UK, US, and Canada, this volume offers the first critical examination
of mass reading events. The authors explore the social practices inspired by
the sharing of books in public spaces, alongside the exclusionary features of
events in order to challenge the assumption that books are everywhere and
accessible to everyone. Through a consideration of the major actors, institu-
tions, and materials that shape contemporary cultures of shared reading, this
study identifies and interrogates the complex ideological investments made
by readers, cultural workers, government agencies, and the mass media in
the meanings of reading at the turn of the twenty-first century.
