The Winter Palace was built by Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli in 1762 as
the main residence of the Russian Emperors and Empresses and served
the Romanovs for one hundred and fifty years ֊ from Catherine the Great
to Nicholas II. The renowned nineteenth-century Russian poet Vasily
Zhukovsky wrote: The greatness of the Winter Palace and its architec-
ture reflect the mighty of the people... for us it represents the national
Russian idea” For a century and a half the Winter Palace was a venue
for almost all of the most significant events of Russian history.
After the fall of the Romanov dynasty in February 1917 the Prime
Minister of the Provisional Government Alexander Kerensky moved to
the former residence together with his staff and guards. On 25 October
1917 the Provisional Government ministers, who were having their regu-
lar meeting in the Winter Palace, were arrested here by the Bolsheviks.
After the October socialist revolution the residence of the Russian Em-
perors was renamed into “Palace of Arts”. Its state rooms were used for
public cinema performances and musical concerts as well as public dis-
putes about the role of new art in the new world. In April 1919 the First
State Independent Exhibition of Art Works was organized here, in which
359 artists, from Futurists ֊ like Vladimir Mayakovsky, to classics of Real-
ism ֊ like Ilya Repin, took part. In the rooms of the first floor (those over-
looking Palace Square in which dinners used to be served for the guests
invited to grand Imperial balls), the Large Throne Hall and Romanov
Gallery 1,826 works of art - mostly paintings - were displayed. This exhi-
bition became an outstanding event in the cultural life of the starving and
suffering from cold Petrograd badly damaged in the Civil War.
In January1920 the Museum of the Revolution was ceremoniously
opened in the Winter Palace. It occupied half of the building, while the
other half still belonged to the Hermitage, yet officially the palace wasn’t
transferred to the jurisdiction of the State Hermitage until 1922.
The book describes the pre-revolutionary everyday court life, people
who took care of this vast royal residence, and how the palace was guard-
ed. It focuses on the important events which took place in the Winter
Palace during the reign of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II and high-
lights careers of some courtiers who were once close to the court and
later dedicated their lives to the post-revolutionary Hermitage. The book
revises the events that took place in the palace during the October revo-
lution and immediately after. It describes the post-revolutionary years,
when the Hermitage began to adapt the former royal rooms to accom-
modate museum exhibitions. The book tells about demonstrations and
mass celebrations on Palace Square and about the Hermitage attempts
to get rid of some unwanted tenants such as the Cavalry School of the
Osoaviakhim (Union of Societies of Assistance to Defence and Aviation-
Chemical Construction) and Uzbekselprom (Uzbek Agricultural Indus-
try) warehouses in the 1930s.
All the stories are based on the records of eyewitness accounts and on
the documents, most of which have never been published before.
