Introduction
The purpose of the text is to offer a brief summary of the outcomes of three consecutive research
seasons (2005-2007) during which the Institute for Archaeological Heritage Brno conducted research of
the hillfort Klasfov near the village of Vysoke Pole (Zlin county) led by PhDr. Jin Kohoutek, CSc. The re-
search activities at this site yielded new, surprising and serious findings related mostly to the concentra-
tion of the occurrence of metal items from the Great Moravia period. The inventory exceeds 1,000 items,
which makes the location unique within the framework of Central European archaeological surveys of
Slavic cultures. The author’s early demise prevented him from publishing the outcomes of his scientific
endeavours. Therefore, this catalogue should inform the professional community at least about the in-
ventory of ten mass finds.
The mountain named Klasfov is located in the eastern part of the Zlin county, near the border-
line between the cadastral districts of Vysoke Pole and Bratrejov. It represents the highest peak of the
eponymous range. This range forms the NE part of the Vizovice highlands. Therefore, in terms of geo-
morphology it belongs to the Outer Western Carpathians. The highest hillfort in Moravia is located at the
forested hilltop of Klastov - the location known as Zamcisko. A wall is still noticeable in the surrounding
terrain which once outlined an area shaped like a right triangle with its legs in the E-W (250 m) and N-S
direction (150 m), respectively. The total size of the fortified area was 2.1 hectares. The most preserved
part of a stone wall can be found along the SE perimeter where it is around 10 meters wide at the base and
almost 3 meters tall. Its height does not exceed 1 meter at the remaining sections. The south, or SE, side
is an exception, as the wall is hardly noticeable there and often only resembles a bank ledge. The highest
point of Klasfov (spot height 753.3 m) is a rocky hilltop range with the protruding Certuv kamen (Devil’s
Stone). The SE slope, within the walled area, features the remains of what probably used to be an artifi-
cial stone terrace with a hole at its east edge (4 meters in diameter and 3 meters deep). It has previously
been referred to in professional literature as water reservoir. However, a 2006 survey showed that
this site evidently had its own water sources (spring). Therefore, the hole was a well (KOHOUTEK
2007).
Brief history of the location
The location was first mentioned in professional literature at the end of the 19th century, by J.
Kucera (KUCERA 1890) and E. Peck (PECK 1892). While J. Kucera focused on the evident remains of
the hillfort, in addition to other activities, Peck focused mostly on the recording of various legends and
folk tales associated with this location, according to which the rocky formation Certuv kamen was asso-
ciated with the existence of Certova stena (Devil’s Wall) near Lidecko. Furthermore, according to Peck,
the locals claimed that supernatural beings are said to have dwelled in the area and treasures guarded by
a black bull or black dog are said to have been buried there. A chateau or monastery was allegedly once
perched atop the mountain, which is why the location is called Zamcisko (zamek = chateau in Czech).
This hillfort is also described in the book by I. L. Cervinka Slovane na Morave a rise Velkomoravska
(CERVINKA 1928, 91). Initially, Cervinka defined this hillfort as an attack hillfort of Great Moravia
(in 1915 he found quern-stones which are now kept in the museum in Valasske Klobouky). Eventually,
under the influence of E. Simek, Cervinka considered the possibility that the location could have in fact
been a Celtic hillfort. This misidentification later appeared in numerous guide books for tourists. Even
the general public quickly accepted the theory, even though there is no find from Klasfov that would
confirm this theory. No professional survey had taken place at this location (with the exception of the
aforementioned experiment by I. L. Cervinka in 1915). In 1968 V. Dohnal established a probe at the hill-

fort (1.5 x 2 m). When he reached the depth of 0.5 m he hit a layer from which he retrieved ten fragments
of ceramic items, of which nine was attributed to the Silesian-Platenice culture within the Lusitanian
Urnfield Culture and one was attributed to the hillfort period (DOHNAL 1988, 70). In 1981 J. Kohoutek
conducted a surface survey with microprobes and he retrieved a similar quantity of fragments. Once
again, most of them were attributed to the Hallstatt culture, with a few exceptions of hillfort period cultu-
re fragments. In 1981J. Nekvasil from the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences in
Brno found a part of a vessel attributed to the Hallstatt period of the urnfield culture (NEKVASIL 1982,
31).
During the late 1990’s and early 2000 s the hillfort on Klast’ov, despite being almost inaccessible,
was frequented by illegal “treasure hunters with metal detectors”. Thanks to J. Kohoutek’s ability to gain
trust of this community (whose members often do not like to communicate with the outside world) in-
formation was received in 2004 about, and a substantial part was recovered of, a unique set containing
dozens of Great Moravian metal artefacts that had been found a year earlier in a pit covered with a quern
stone. This find constitutes the largest collection of metal items from this part of SE Moravia which can
be attributed to the period of Great Moravia. Currently this collection is marked as deposit Dl. Thanks
to this discovery a field survey was commenced the year after (KOHOUTEK 2005).
Research seasons 2005 - 2007
2005
Based on the aforementioned find and the initiative by J. Zicha, the Mayor of Vysoke Pole, minor
survey was carried out in the hillfort 2005. In May 2005 a planimetric survey of the location was carried
out by the employees of the Institute for Archaeological Heritage Brno. Then a total of six probes were
established under the leadership of J. Kohoutek. At the same time J. Kohoutek received 73 metal items
from the man who found them (K. Giebel). Giebel informed Kohoutek that the items were all found un-
derneath the same quern stone. Metal detector survey was carried out on a continuous basis on the whole
area of the hillfort. The same survey continued throughout the remaining research seasons. Another 35
metal items were found during the field survey. There were far fewer ceramic material fragments, namely
fragments of hillfort period pots and Hallstatt period pottery fragments. Fragments of Great Moravian
quern stones were also found.
2006
Based on surprising finds and outcomes of the 2005 survey, the survey continued in 2006. Its aim
was to finish the rescue archaeological survey via the use of several probes used in the vicinity of Certuv
kamen, as well as in the SE part (near the terrace). These activities also included preventive survey using
metal detectors. As a result, 305 metal items were found. A total of nine probes were applied. In addition
to these probe-based survey techniques, a partial survey of the so-called water tank took place. The initial
study had showed that it had been intentionally renovated and clay was used to insulate the walls. Traces
of quern stones and metal items were found in it, but they were not preserved in the form of retrievable
items due to the aggressive environment. The steady water level suggests that the water sources are stable.
Therefore, it was assumed that it used to be a spring or well. The use of metal detector revealed four
more mass deposits of metal items, of which only deposit D3 was located on the north slope underneath
Certuv kamen, within the walled area. The remaining deposits were found outside the area. The survey of
the walled area was compromised by the thick forest. However, two key locations of the individual metal
items were identified: the summit with Certuv kamen and the slope above the terrace with the well.

2007
Research activities were focused on the upper part of the hillfort around Certuv kamen, where
probe I was expanded to include parts (I/II, I/III) with an emphasis on the area of the artificial terrace
near the water source. Another six probes were used in this area. The survey of the well was abandoned
without being completed first due to the “strength” of the spring. The use of metal detectors revealed ano-
ther four deposits of metal items, all within the walled area. In addition to these deposits, 264 individual
items were found, mostly in the close proximity to the summit and near the well in the terrace (just like
in the previous season).
Conclusion
The outcomes of the three research seasons (2005 to 2007) yielded new and significant knowledge
with an impact on the history of the southern part of Wallachia and SE Moravia (if not larger area). A hil-
lfort surrounded by stone fortification walls was built some time during the Late Bronze Age and Early
Iron Age (levels HB ?, HC). During this time, this hilly part of eastern Moravia saw more intensive set-
tlement for the very first time, as proved and documented via other numerous sites, e.g. the burial field
in Vlachovice and Sehradice. The dating of the wall (which was renovated at least once) to the period
associated with the Lusatian Urnfield Culture was confirmed via the analysis of the probe K.
The use of the area of the hillfort during the hillfort period is the truly surprising discovery. The
handful of evidence of permanent settlement (quern stones or fragment of ceramic items) is in direct
contrast with the abundance of metal items or fragments thereof (1,100 pieces). The ten deposits pre-
sented by the team contained as many as 230 of these items, i.e. 20 %. The remaining items were found
individually throughout the area of the hillfort, as well as on slopes outside the walled area. It was compli-
cated to tell whether these solitary items were lost by accident or whether they were buried intentionally.
The dating of some of these items is complicated as a result of this confusion. The dating of the deposits
can be supported by an analysis of chronologically sensitive items (i.e. spurs or clamps) or items typical
for this period. Due to the distribution of these items in individual deposits, it is evident that they were
created during the same period. The limits of dating can be based on the total absence of items which
are definitely associated with the 8th century and on the knowledge of the late 9th or early 10th century.
Therefore, it would seem that these deposits were buried during the period consistent with the existence
of Great Moravia. The question is how one should explain the presence of the broad range of metal items,
plus deposits, at a hillfort whose area is smaller than 2.1 hectares and which is the highest point of a re-
latively large area. Based on the 2005 probing it was assumed that Klast’ov represented the much-sought-
after central hillfort from the period of Great Moravia in southern Wallachia, after the location known
as Gradca near Slavicin had been dismissed as such based on newer surveys. That said, no significant
settlement activities or “construction works” were found in the vicinity of the hillfort. Therefore, based
on the information available and the relatively limited size of the area we cannot say for sure anything
about the function of the area around the hillfort. Based on the discovery of spurs, clasps and other mi-
litaria we can assume that a cavalry was present in the area, or the hillfort was used for rites of passage
for new warriors. Furthermore, it could also be a Slavic cult site with evidence of intentional burying of
deposits or individual metal items at a mountain top (within the walled area or around it). The question
whether the surprising quantity of metal items is represented mostly by votive offerings brought to a cult
site and sacrificed to the god Perun, as suggested by J. Kohoutek based on the folk tales he collected, re-
mains unresolved. As far as the deposits are concerned, we can consider the safekeeping of property of
traders offering a wide range of products, or farmers or craftsmen, whereas the significance of the area as
a cult site would increase the level of protection of said property (TURCAN 2012, 45-46). The decline of
the location and its significance supposedly occurred (at least based on the dating of most finds) shortly
before the end of the 9th century or at the very beginning of the 10th century, which event can be attribu-

ted to the Christianization with the arrival of Cyril and Methodius to Great Moravia (863). Field surveys
of Slavic barrow fields with sunken cremation graves near Luhacovice and Slavicin prove that old rituals
and pagan cults in the hilly part of southern Wallachia (which include the vicinity of Klast’ov) lasted until
the 11th century (DOHNAL 1962), by which time Christianity had spread throughout most of Moravia.
The preservation and documentation is currently in progress of the finds from the research and
surveys carried out by J. Kohoutek between 2005 and 2007 and I. Cizmar in 2009. As of 2011 the field
survey has been carried out by the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech
Republic. The conclusions regarding the dating and significance of this hillfort will be possible after the
final evaluation of the new knowledge by the professional community. This catalogue should be a humble
contribution.
