RESUME
Introduction
Between the years 2000 and 2004, the Institute of Archaeological Heritage Brno carried out,
within the framework of a purpose-specific project of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic
entitled “Evidence and documentation of barrow fields in Moravia”, a detailed registration of all barrow
fields in Moravia. In some regions the efforts were focused on the evidence of the current knowledge
base, based on the published and unpublished resources (Kelc region). On the other hand, in some other
regions field survey and identification of these barrow fields were carried out as well (e.g. in eastern
Moravia) in combination with detailed planimetric surveys (Litencice highlands - Litencicke vrchy,
Zdänice highlands - Zdänicke vrchy plus part of Chriby) or even with detailed processing of the finds
(Drahany highlands - Drahanska vrchovina). A total of 156 barrow fields from present-day Moravia were
registered, with more than 1,700 barrows.
This document summarises the current knowledge about the barrow fields found in the Zdanice
forest area which, in the course of the project, were localised and documented and where planimetric
surveys were carried out. Detailed field surveys were carried out in some location, thanks to which yet
unknown and unregistered barrows were discovered. A detailed study of all available written sources of
information about previous barrow field survey was carried out, especially the logs and diaries of E. Filip,
E. Kolibabe and A. Prochäzka. Most finds from the uncovered barrows have already been publicized; new
information has only been made public about so far unknown barrow fields from the locations known as
“U Hubertka” and “Zlaty jelen” near Herspice.
Brief overview of the study of barrow fields in Moravia (not including the Zdanice forest area)
First archaeological surveys of barrows in Moravia took place around the 1850 s. Probably the
oldest known piece of evidence is the barrow studied by A. Bocek on the outskirts of the city of Olomouc,
sometime between 1841 and 1854. Another research was carried out by Knight Petr von Chlumetzky on
the Zurän hill near the village of Podoli between 1850 and 1853. Curator of the present-day Moravian
Museum (then known as “Frantisek Museum”) M. Trapp discovered, in 1850, a group of 17 barrows in
the village of Borotice. Trapp then went on to study one of the barrows. Later, in 1878, Trapp uncovered
a barrow in the Zlin neighbourhood of Louky. The last two decades of the 19th century saw an increase
in the interest in archaeology and, therefore, the number of barrow cemeteries discovered and studied
during the same period increased as well. In 1885, a barrow known as “Kopecek” (Little Hill) near the
village of Saratice was studied by the “father of Moravian archaeology” J. Wankel. During the 1890 s
Wankel and his colleague F. Prikryl studied barrow fields hear the villages of Jarohnevice and Vrbka in
the northern part of the Chriby region. A massive Slavic barrow field known as “Tabarky” was among
those studied by the two scientists. In 1880, J. Wankel studied the looted Hallstatt-period barrow known
as “Krälovsky kopec” (Royal Hill) near the village of Tesetice in the present-day Olomouc county. In
1895-1896 K. J. Maska dug out yet another significant Hallstatt barrow known as “Hlasnica” near the
village of Horakov which later inspired J. Böhm to coin the name “Horakov culture” to refer to the Early
Iron Age culture in southern Moravia. The turn of the century saw a massive increase in I. L. Cervinkas
interest in barrow fields, particularly those from the region known as Zahofi where he found and surveyed
numerous locations, especially those dating back to the Eneolithic. Back then I. L. Cervinka argued that
there were “as many as several hundred barrow fields in Moravia” (CERVINKA 1909, 53).
Between WWI and WWII the research into barrow cemeteries continued in various parts of
Moravia with varied intensity. A. Gottwald and K. Dobes studied Late Stone Age barrow fields in the
present-day Prostejov county; during the late 1920s and early 1930s the region around the town of
Znojmo was the sphere of interest for I. L. Cervinka and F. Vildomec who studied, among other objects,

the barrow fields near Suchohrdly. In the 1930 s and early 1940 s barrow cemeteries from the Middle
Bronze Age were uncovered in the Chfiby region (Celoznice) and at various locations all over the Zdanice
forest. These discoveries were summarised in a report written by M. Chleborad (1939).
The study of Slavic barrow fields began in the 1930’s in eastern Moravia, near the towns of Hluk,
Luhacovice and Zlutava. Later, in the early 1940’s, J. Skutil and J. Poulik carried out a large-scale survey
of a Slavic barrow field in Strazovice while M. Solle carried out a field survey of a barrow field near
Buchlovice. A detailed overview of these sites was written by B. Dostal in 1950’s (1957). After WWII,
efforts were focused on the study of Slavic barrow fields which were studied by the employees of the
Institute of Archaeology in Brno. Larger-scale excavations in South Moravia took place in Pritluky, by
J. Poulik between 1950 and 1954 (POULIK 1960, 32-38, 187-189, 194-197), in Bulhary, by J. Nekvasil
in 1952 (NEKVASIL 1955), in Vysocany, by J. Krai between 1951 and 1953 and 1956 (KRA.L 1959),
and near Stavenice (the so-called Luzice barrow field), by J. Nekvasil in 1953 (NEKVASIL 1978, 56-68).
Later, in 1971, B. Novotny studied a Slavic barrow field in Uhercice (NOVOTNY 1972). Between 1976
and 1993 S. Stuchlik carried out long-term excavation of the Early and Middle Bronze Age barrow field
in Borotice (STUCHLlK 2006). Furthermore, M. Smid and A. Prudka carried out, between 1970 and
1990, surveys of numerous barrow cemeteries from the Eneolithic in Drahanska vrchovina (Drahany
Highlands) (SMID 2003).
The study of Moravian barrow cemeteries is still underway. It does not consist solely in the
isolated studies of individual barrows. Detailed field surveys allow scientists to discover new and
unknown barrow fields (such as the one in Bozice; KOVARNIK 2002). In addition, air surveys facilitate
the discovery of numerous signs of graves surrounded by round pits (BALEK 1997) which are almost
definitely the remains of what used to be barrows.
History of the study of barrow fields in the Zdanice forest
The first survey of barrow fields in this region was carried out by A. Prochazka on the location
known as “Bezednik” near Koberice in 1901. In his work, Prochazka mentions barrows found in
the forest known as “Krestanov” as well as other barrows scattered around cadastre of the village of
Bosovice, near the “u Svate” site. In 1902, A. Prochazka uncovered one barrow at the aforementioned
site (“Krestanov” near Koberice). In 1911, F. Cerny uncovered five barrows at a barrow field in the forest
known as “Kolibske” near Koberice.
Around 1920, A. Prochazka discovered a barrow field within the cadastral area of the village of
Damborice, at a location known as “Bezednik”. He uncovered one of the barrows. However, the real boom
in terms of barrow field research was seen during the late 1920’s and early 1930’s thanks to E. Kolibabe,
then director of Liechtenstein-owned forests in Bucovice, and M. Chleborad, then court officer from
Bucovice, who, in 1927, started their respective activities in this regard by studying the aforementioned
location in Damborice. In 1928 E. Kolibabe discovered a barrow field at a location known as “Skripov”
near the village of Velke Hosteradky. In the same year, he managed to uncover it in cooperation with M.
Chleborad. In the same year, the two researchers found a barrow field at a location known as “Lichy” in
Damborice where, between 1928 and 1930, they uncovered thirteen barrows. In 1930 they studied a total
of seven barrows in Bosovice, at a location known as “U dvou zavor”. In 1939 M. Chleborad published a
very detailed report of his and Kolibabe’s joint research activities from 1927 tol930.
In 1930 E. Kolibabe uncovered four barrows at a location known as “U ctyr tabuli” in Bosovice,
plus one more barrow one year later, close to the four he found earlier. In 1931 he studied three more
barrows in the village of Damborice, at the aforementioned location named “Lichy”, plus four more
barrows at a nearby location known as “Fararova habruvka”.
Initially, the interest in the study of barrow fields in the eastern part of Zdanice forest was not
as strong. Only in 1927 two teachers from Herspice, E. Patek and J. Majek, found a barrow field near

Herspice, at a location known as U Hubertka”, and uncovered their first barrow later that year where,
even later, A. Prochazka managed to retrieve a bronze dagger. In 1931 M. Chleborad and E. Kolibabe
found a large barrow field near Bohuslavice and studied several barrows in detail.
Following the retirement of E. Kolibabe who donated all of his finds, along with the inventory and
log books and diaries to the Moravian Museum in 1933 and passed away in 1936, the interest in barrow
fields focused on the eastern part of the region. The location known as “U Hubertka” near Herspice was
the subject of attention of A. Prochazka who studied three barrows in this area in 1936 and 1940, as well
as M. Chleborad and F. Kalousek who each studied one barrow in 1937. In addition, O. Strach studied
one in 1936 on his own and two in 1936 in cooperation with A. Prochazka and two more in 1938 on
his own. Director of a savings bank from Bucovice E. Filip uncovered the most barrows (eight) between
1938 and 1940. In 1940 E. Filip discovered a yet unknown barrow field at a location known as “U zlateho
jelena” near Mourinov and uncovered and opened several barrows himself.
I. L. Cervinka focused on barrow fields from this region as well. In 1928 he was invited by
M. Chleborad and E. Kolibabe to observe and take part in excavation works at the location known
as “Skripov” near Velke Hosteradky. In 1932 he presented a report to the Institute of Archaeology of
the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic on the discovery of the barrow field near Bohuslavice.
Although I. L. Cervinka himself did not carry out any barrow field study in the Zdanice forest, he closely
observed the field work and used the outcomes in his summary reports.
After WWII, field survey of barrow fields in the region was nonexistent for decades. Only in 1989
the planimetric survey of the barrow field near Bohuslavice was carried out and B. Kavanova studied
three of the barrows. Following the conclusion of our project, we can say that fifteen locations with a total
of 187 barrows can be identified in the region of Zdanice forest.
Therefore, A. Prochazka, E. Kolibabe, M. Chleborad and E. Filip are thought to have contributed
the most to the barrow field research efforts in this region (Zdanice forest).
Barrow field characteristics
The spatial arrangement of the barrows suggests that in some cases (locations 5.3, 5.6 and 5.13)
were originally individual groups of what used to be one big barrow cemetery.
The dating of four barrow fields (5.2, 5.6, 5.12 and 5.14) is impossible, while the dating of the
remaining barrow fields is only based on the information about the barrows which actually were studied.
Two barrow fields (5.1, 5.13) are probably exclusively Slavic, with the exception of the location number
14 where an additional grave was found in an older barrow. Barrows dating to the Middle Bronze Age at
the latest were found at three locations (5.7, 5.8 and 5.15), while one location dates to the Hallstatt period
(5.11). Barrows from both periods were found at six locations (5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.9, 5.10, 5.13). It is evident,
from the geographical point of view, that barrow fields from the Middle Bronze Age and the Hallstatt
period are the only barrow fields to be found on longitudinal ridges at the elevation between 320 and 380
metres ASL. On the other hand, two Slavic barrow fields were discovered on shorter side ridges at low-
lying locations in Zdanice forest (5.1, 5.13), at approximately 270-290 metres ASL. A barrow field from
the Middle Bronze Age, the Hallstatt period and with an additional Slavic grave is located at a similar
altitude of approximately 260-270 metres ASL (“Skripov” location near Velke Hosteradky). Therefore,
it can be assumed that Slavic barrow fields were generally established at lower altitudes, but no rule
can be concluded from this information. As for the Chriby highlands in the eastern part of the region,
the barrow fields from the Middle Bronze Age found near Celoznice are located at an altitude above
400 metres ASL, one of them even above 500 metres ASL. That said, Slavic barrow fields found near
Brankovice and Vrbka (“Tabarky”) are also located at higher altitudes of around 320 to 340 metres ASL.
Most barrow cemeteries are situated in the western part of the region in question. On the other

hand, only two barrow fields have so far been discovered in the eastern part of Zdanice forest and a
substantial portion of the material retrieved from these barrow fields remains unpublished. It is debatable
whether this disproportion can be attributed to various levels of field surveys or whether it is an original
phenomenon, since all aforementioned researches from Slavkov u Brna or Bucovice used to work in the
western part of said region.
