VESTMENTS AND INSIGNIA GRAVE
OF PRZEMYŚL LATIN RITE BISHOPS
SUMMARY
The title of present book indicates the subject which is presentation of grave attire and Przemyśl
bishops’ insignia. These historical items were excavated in the crypts of the Cathedral Basilica of
the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist in Przemyśl. Basing on the
finds’ evidence it was stated that the bishops had been buried in pontifical vestments with their
insignia. Their bodies were equipped with 17 single clothes elements, wigs, episcopal rings and
crosiers. Majority of excavated artifacts were subjected to conservation process (120) and prepared
for exhibition purposes in restored Basilica crypts. The analyses of these finds would have been
impossible, but for their protection and restoration. The items were made of various materials, had
different sizes and were in varied state of preservation. Some very huge objects were reported among
the finds. The biggest collection consists of silk textiles and knitted fabrics which had originally been
used for bishops’ vestments and coffins upholstery. Their state of preservation is also varied, from
small fragments to almost complete objects, which facts resulted from the conditions of depositing
environment. Fabrics in the best state, preserving even their original colors were registered on
mummified corpses. Garment excavated in waterlogged crypts no 10 and 11 characterized with the
most significant destruction and putrefaction due to the most infavorable conditions.
Thanks to conservation treatments it was possible to describe in the book particular items
of bishops’ vestments, insignia, evolution process in their forms and manufacturing techniques
progressing within the space of centuries. Discussing particular artifacts, the author put also the
stress to their symbolic significance and it should be emphasized that the importance of symbols is
perceived in its extensive meaning, which in many cases dates back to mediaeval allegory used in
liturgy.
Subject described in the book also concerns historical background of these finds. History of the
cathedral and its underground is presented, although the details of its architecture are only signaled,
basing on archaeological exploration. It is described what main problems with identification of
excavated relics were reported and what the way of particular persons’ identity establishing was
implemented.
The problem of identification started just after the relics excavating. The vestments and
grave equipment were regarded as distinguishing elements pointing at some details of liturgical
vestments stated as characteristic for bishops’ attire. They consisted of: mitre, pilus (calotte), gloves,
stockings, dalmatic (tunic), silk shoes, episcopal ring and a crosier. Naturally, not every coffin with
bishops’ relics contained all these elements. It was decided, however, that if every next opened
coffin contained at least one of those items, it could be assumed that the burials concerned bishops.
On these grounds eight bishops’ burials were tentatively selected. The relics were placed in coffins
marked with numbers: I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX (fig. 25). Coffin no III contained fragments

of lay attire. During particular body identifications features like: initials, coat-of-arm and dates
formed with decorative nails (rivets) on coffin fronts turned out to be most helpful. On this ground,
comparing the dates of births and deaths with written sources and local bishops lists, five individuals
were successfully identified (coffin no IV, V, VI, VIII, IX). Coffin no VI was additionally equipped
with bishop’s noble coat-of-arms, outlined by the means of decorative rivets, confirming univocally
the identity of Hieronim Wielogłowski. The analyses revealed relics of 11 bishops, excavated during
this archaeological exploration, 10 of which were identified and their biographies are also presented
in the book, together with their careers and achievements.
Majority of relics found in the crypts were in skeletal forms. Crypt no 5, situated under the
chapel of the Holy Cross contained relics of the following bishops: coffin no II - Aleksander Antoni
Fredro, coffin no VII - Andrzej Pruski, coffin no VIII - Franciszek Szembek, coffin no IX ֊ Michał
Witosławski and the relics of an unidentified bishop, located in soil grave. Skeletons of next bishops
were excavated in crypts no 10 (Jan Antoni de Potoczki) and no 11 (Antoni Gołaszewski).
Bodies of four bishops excavated in the crypts under the chapel of the Holy Cross were
mummified. Corpses of bishop Hieronim Wielogłowski (coffin no VI) and Stanisław Wykowski
(coffin no IV) were mummified in a natural way, while the relics of bishops: Walenty Wężyk (coffin
no V) and Józef Tadeusz Kierski (coffin no I) had been treated with artificial mummification (fig. 28,
29). Due to differentiated state of body preservation, the book also describes the problems of natural
and intentional mummification process with special attention turned to treatments concerning body
embalming and plants serving for the corpses stuffing and preservation. The analyses were made to
present the ways of natural body mummification in the listed crypts.
Reports of bishops’, excavated in the crypts of the Cathedral Basilica in Przemyśl funerals,
accessible in written sources deliver, in majority, only general brief information concerning
preparations and ceremonies. They are limited to dates and places of funerals, names of the most
eminent pardcipants and places of body deposition. In some cases, a person delivering a funeral
speech is listed. This information, however, enables to reenact the solemn atmosphere of that event,
filled with grief of departure and hope of future meeting in God’s home. Therefore, the work tries to
recreate the customs accompanying bishops’ funerals on the base of archaeological, iconographical
and written sources (with indispensable source of knowledge which is post-Trent Caeremoniale
Episcoporuvi). This book defines precisely various liturgical ceremonies with bishops participation
and refers exactly to the roles and actions of particular persons during liturgy. The volume of Pope’s
Clement VIII Caeremoniale Episcoporum printed in 1633 is kept in Przemyśl Basilica’s treasury (fig. 44).
The next chapter refers to coffins in which the bishops’ bodies had been deposited in the
crypts, with descriptions of types of ornamenting and constructions. On the background of symbolic
significance, the pillows placed under the deceased’s heads were described, including their contents
and functions.
The following chapter concerns one heart burial found in a funerary urn, compared with
other examples of this tradition. The book is completed by Appendix with tables containing data
concerning Przemyśl bishops, drawings of bands and laces decorating the vestments, embroidery
patterns, textile ornaments, patterns of gowns and drawings of particular coffins.
Despite the fact, that many different questions were raised in the book, its title is a conscious
author’s decision to attract the readers attention particularly to grave attire and insignia of
bishops. The insignia excavated in other archaeological sites have already been elaborated in a few
publications, contrary to bishops grave garments which are presented in such a scale for the first
time. It is also the first time when such a rich collection of archaeological material of this type was
excavated, restored and prepared for exhibition. These are the aspects worth emphasizing by the
book title in author’s intention.

Chronological range was marked out by the source material explored in the crypts and is
limited to the period between 1728-1832, when the first date refers to bishop’s Franciszek Szembek
death and his burial and it is the oldest of all found in that site. 1832 is a year of bishop’s Jan de
Potoczki death.
Financial means for most of redecoration works performed in the basilica’s underground and
conservation treatments were provided by Podkarpacki Provincial Historic Preservation Officer
dr G. Stojak and supported by Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. All special analyses of
archaeological material and a part of conservation treatments were financed from the means of
a project completed within the frame of the National Programme of the Development of Humanities:
„Funeral cultures of the elite of I Republic of Poland in 16th-18th c. in the territory of the Crown and
Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Attempt of interdisciplinary analysis.” The Project also financed the cost
of preparing and printing the book.
