adam_text | Mask ofthe Spring Water is a very personal documentation of traditional
African dance in a number of societies in East, West and Central Africa
during the 1960s and 1970s. The author, Birgit Åkesson (1908-2001),
presents a unique body of material which she analyzed from her special
vantage point as a professional dancer and choreographer. Her search
for the essence of dance, the source beyond language or expression that
was universal for true dance, had its point of departure in dance as an
essential part of human existence. In opposition to many art historians,
anthropologists and ethnologists, she experienced the dance, the masks, the
music and the social interaction as intrinsic elements of a totality. In many
instances, what she was allowed to see then may no longer exist, making her
observations a valuable historical record of the state of traditional African
dance in the mid-i900S.
Birgit Åkesson was one of Sweden’s most innovative modern dancers and
choreographers, as well as a teacher and researcher. From 1929-31 she
studied dance in Dresden with Mary Wigman. Moving to Paris after her
studies, she broke with German expressionist dance and began anew. In
France she met with such success that she was called the “Picasso of Dance”
for her poetic solo dance with no musical accompaniment. She continued
to choreograph and perform in Sweden and abroad, and taught dance in
Stockholm. During the 1950s and 60s she created many legendary dances
for the Swedish Royal Opera in collaboration with the composer Karl-
Birger Blomdahl and the poet Erik Lindegren and other writers, artists
and musicians. These include works such as Sisyphus, Ikaros and Aniara, in
which Åkesson created the world’s first lead role for a dancer in an opera. In
1990 her final choreographic works, Autumn Leaves and Hues of Light, were
produced for Swedish Television.
Åkesson traveled to Africa for the first time in 1964 and she returned many
times over the next eleven years, with stays in Tanzania, Ethiopia, Ghana,
Nigeria, Liberia and the Republic of the Congo. She taught in Ghana,
Nigeria and Tanzania, and later continued her research and teaching in
China and Japan during the 1980s and 90s. She was granted the title of
Professor by the Swedish government in 1992, and received the Swedish
Academy’s Gold Medal in 1998. In 1999 she was awarded an honorary
doctorate from Stockholm University.
