SUMMARY
Doctoral thesis exposes different aspects of Polish comical newspapers printed in Łódź be-
tween two wars. The author describes ten weekly and two biweekly magazines focusing on lin-
guistic attitudes of texts, which were there published. These are for example: „Tam-Tam” (1922),
„Dymek z Papierosa” (1924), „Czerwony Kos” (1924), „Violetera” (1926), „Uśmiech” (1927),
„Swawolna Myśl - Swawolne Żarty” (1930), „Wolna Myśl - Wolne Żarty” (1919), „Nowy Deka-
meron” (1924), „Żarty” (1924, 1936), „Wesoły Bocian” (1935), „Adam i Ewa” (1934), ¡Hi, Hi,
Hi” (1938), „Szpilki” (1939). Researches of language of local creators precede information about
the specificity of regional press - its authors, topics, methods of working. Two remaining levels
- linguistic and press studies - constitute the main part of the work. Dissertation is divided into three
chapters: 1) Local comical press in Lodz; 2) Text genres in comical local newspapers, 3) Linguistic
jokes in local texts.
First of them contains deliberations about authors, topics and quality of local press. As nearly
half of these magazines was printed by one publisher, humor exposed in them is based on similar or
identical formulas. Topics like woman depreciation or scoffing other nationalities, mainly Germans,
Jews and Russians, are the basic ideas used by creators of local jokes. Majority of jokes contains
negative stereotypes, that were deeply ingrained in Polish consciousness at that time. The author
identify these stereotypes, and show them to readers. Inoffensive “childish” jokes describing funnily
the behavior and language of children seem very productive, too. The lions share of regional press is
filled with universal jokes involving, in general, human activities. All magazines have similar layout
constructed by different types of colored or black and white illustrations (e.g. photos and caricatures),
and small colorful typeface grouped in columns. They were printed in two standard formats: 4° and 8°.
The second chapter of dissertation contains the analysis of two sorts of speech: genres comical
primarily (anecdote, joke, satire, humorous sketch, aphorism, comedy) and genres comical second-
arily (literary and press genres adapted to the needs of satirical press, among others: epigram, love
poem, fable, ballad, paragraph, feature, press announcement, review, press poll). All of these texts
are characterized from structural, semantic and stylistic level and compared with modern versions,
according to M. Wojtak’s conception of genres. The author tries to explain, which aspects of a single
type of speech were really important, which were omitted or treated as negligible with a view to
their comical influence.
The third part of the work involves description of linguistic methods of creating wit, especially
different ty pes of ambiguity, that being the most often used verbal phenomenon applied in creating
jokes, both at present and in the past. This is a very effective sort of wit, productive even nowa-
days, e.g. in advertising. Comical effects can be divided into two groups: generally comical and
only-verbally comical. The former, ie. contrast, comparison and word accumulation, can be used not
only in word material, but also in other kinds of art, e.g. music and painting. The second are built
only by means of language - lexical and syntactical constructions. The author in his work refers to
D. Buttler’s conception of language jokes and partially supplements and modifies Buttler’s findings.
Undoubtedly, local comical newspapers printed between two wars weren’t the object of re-
searchers interest. Dissertation attempts to add information about this significant component of re-
gional interwar culture, that needs more exposure.
