Summary
From time immemorial, Prague Vltava islands (Fig-
ure l) have been among the localities that have at-
tracted the attention not only of the residents of
Prague and its vicinity, but also of the visitors to the
capital. These are specific places, public areas without
which many cannot even imagine the life in Prague.
Some Vltava islands are well-known and frequently
visited, at others, the visits are quite rare (some of
them are even inaccessible) and the public has hardly
any idea of their very existence.
In the course of time, islands were appearing
and disappearing, changing their shape, importance
and functions. Not only changes in the Vltava's wa-
tercourse, but also human activity decided on their
formation and disappearance. Thanks to the specific
geological conditions in Prague, a large number of
islands were created there. One can find historical
documents about 22 of them (Figure 2). The islands
were mostly disappearing in the 19th and 20th centu-
ries, when embankments were regulated and locks
and ship canals constructed. Nothing has remained
from some of them (Primatorsky, Papirnicky ostrov
and others, see Table 2), while others merged with
the banks, de facto losing their status of islands, al-
though, thanks to a tradition, they are still consid-
ered islands (Kampa, Libensky and Rohansky ostrov).
In the past 100-150 years, Prague islands have more
or less acquired the stable form in which the public
knows them at present. Now one can find 13 of them
(see Table l) in the Vltava River in Prague.
At the close of the 19th century and in the 20th cen-
tury, the islands became important social, cultural
and sports centres serving the short-term recreation
of Prague’s residents. They did not lose this function
even at present. Now, too, we can consider them
major oases of greenery in the overcrowded centre
of the metropolis. The main functional changes in the
islands occurred in the first half of the 20th century
when the original production function was gradu-
ally giving way to the recreational and sports-rec-
reational functions. It is a current trend to preserve
and support the functions.
The islands themselves are considerably influenced
by flood risks. In order to alleviate them, large regula-
tion projects were implemented at the turn of the
19th and 20th centuries. Thanks to them, Prague was
all but spared the devastating impact of floods till the
end of the 20th centuries. In 1999, the construction
of further anti-flood protection systems was started.
Flowever, Prague islands were seriously hit by the
floods in August 2002 and most recently in June 2013.
The book is based on a research lasting for several
years and it adds the knowledge presented at the
eponymous exhibition unveiled to the public at the
Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague at
the turn of 2014 and 2015. It has set as its objective to
present the basic, in particular historical geographic
information on both the existing and disappeared
islands. In order to decide on the future of these
specific places, mostly creating a major public space
in Prague, one has to know not only the history, but
also the present. Flence the attention paid in the book
to the current use of the existing Vltava islands.
The book is divided into several chapters. Its in-
troduction is followed by a chapter outlining pos-
sible approaches to the study of the chosen topic.
On account of their unique and unrepeatable char-
acter, their "genius loci,” the islands are looked for
by visitors and tourists on a daily basis, at almost
any weather and in all seasons of the year. As they
are major public areas, one can look at them not
only from the historical geographical viewpoint or
examine them as a destination of urban tourism. One
can also study them in a more general way: from the
viewpoint of the perception of a geographical site.
Given the nature of the topic under consideration,
the methods of qualitative research were primarily
used in the research into the Vltava islands. Along
with a search of the relevant literature and further
accessible sources associated with the examined
topic (old illustrations: engravings, photographs, old
maps), a use was made of the methods of standard-
ised interview and guided interviews both with the
visitors to the islands and major actors operating
in the islands. (Compiled by the method of simple
descriptive statistics, the results of this survey are
presented in Chapter 6. The basic results are obvious
in Charts 1-6; they were also compared with the re-
sults of previous surveys conducted in 2003 and 2006.
They agree that visitors consider the islands a rec-
reational zone and they want to keep using them to
this effect.) The knowledge arisen from their answers
makes part of the texts describing the individual is-
lands. There was also the method of observation as
well as acquisition and analysis of a photographic
documentation.
Further chapters of the book characterise the in-
dividual islands. Chapter 4 describes the formation
of the islands in the historical era, paying a detailed
attention to those that both vanished in distant his-
tory and that merged with the embankment in con-
nection with the regulation of the river. Chapter 5 is
devoted to the existing islands. At first, it introduces
to the general public the islands that are inacces-
sible at present: the "nameless" island in Branik, and
Petrzilkovsky and Kfizovnicky islands that are among
those in Prague's centre. Then the islands are un-
veiled to the reader gradually, as if he sailed down
the Vltava. These are at first the "southern islands,"
called Cisarska louka and Veslarsky ostrov. They are
followed by the "central islands” with a rich historical
record: Detsky, Slovansky, Strelecky and Kampa. Then
there is Stvanice that has gained its fame by sports,
followed by the islands that are de facto part of the
mainland or peninsulae and that are undergoing the
biggest changes at present: Rohansky and Libehsky
islands. The biggest island, Cisafsky, is introduced as
the last one. To demonstrate the topic in a greater
detail, a use was made of the graphic documentation
comprised of the engravings depicting the islands
in the mid-i9th century, slices of old maps of Prague
(provided by the Map Collection of the Faculty of Sci-
ence of Charles University in Prague) and photos from
2010-2014. These graphic elements are supplemented
with short notes describing the depicted sites in the
islands and their closest vicinity. Some photos were
deliberately made in a way that captures the present
form of the places depicted in old engravings.
The conclusion uses a simple form of synoptic
tables to provide the readers with the elementary,
gained information on the individual existing islands
(Table l) and disappeared islands (Table 2) along
with a small mention of a "new" island whose map-
ping was discussed at the close of 2014.
