adam_text | UNDERGROUND THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY
Summary
The phenomenon of the establishment of an underground theological seminary in
the life of the society of Lithuania and the Catholic Church was determined by certain
circumstances which arose during the Soviet years. The seminary existed only for a
definite period of time. When the circumstances which had caused its establishment
disappeared, so also did the seminary itself. Thus, the underground seminary has to be
perceived as an unusual educational institution for preparing priests, which appeared
because of special circumstances. The students studied in the underground seminary
under the leadership of the Jesuit and Marian orders.
Why and when was the underground seminary established. The reasons for the es-
tablishment of such a seminary were relatively of two kinds: objective and subjective.
The principles of the Soviet authorities concerning religious faith were not based on
trust and tolerance (the freedom of conscience declared in the Constitution) but on dis-
crimination and even the goal to destroy the faith completely. Thus, the activity of the
Church as well as the education of priests was restricted in every possible way. First of
all, a physical blow was struck against the previous educational system of priests: the
theological seminaries in Vilkaviškis, Vilnius, and Telšiai were closed in 1944-1946.
Only the interdiocesan theological seminary in Kaunas remained open.29 In the entire
territoiy of the Soviet Union in addition to the Kaunas seminary there was also a semi-
nary open in Riga. The reduction of the number of seminaries was not the most terrible
blow. It was much worse that the activities of the only seminary of Lithuania were re-
stricted and the admission of theological students was reduced year by year during the
three post-war decades. In the 1960s there were years when the Soviet authorities al-
lowed the admission of only 4 or 5 candidates to the seminary.30 For this reason the
number of seminarians dropped to 24 people in 1965.31 Thus, in the subsequent years
naturally, i.e. with the death of priests, there would not be enough priests to satisfy
even the minimal requirements of the believers. The Church was not the only one to
29 The Soviet authorities of the highest rank had plans to abolish the seminary in Kaunas.

recognize the problem of the lack of priests ֊ the representatives of the Soviet authori-
ties also stated that the situation was deteriorating. The representatives of the Council
of Religious Affairs at the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Re-
public presented such information in their annual reports.32 Physical pressure on the
Kaunas theological seminary was the objective factor, which made the more active
priests of the Catholic Church look for ways to resist the policy of the Soviet authorities
concerning the education of priests. Thus, the underground education of priests should
be considered as an alternative to the measures taken by the authorities and as a method
to increase to some extent the number of priests.
The actions of Soviet institutions, which directly dealt with people, i.e. the candi-
dates to the seminaiy and the seminarians, should be attributed to the subjective factors.
The decision to enter the seminary, i.e. the feeling of having a calling, would appear to
be the most real way to accept the sacrament of Holy Orders. However, the order of ad-
mission to the seminary was established by the Soviet authorities - the admission or
nonadmission of candidates had to be confirmed by the representative of religious cults.
Due to such an order the door of the seminary was often closed to young people who had
firmly decided to enter the seminary. By glancing at the volumes of The Chronicle of the
Catholic Church in Lithuania or reading the biographies of priests, we can find scores of
examples of young people not being allowed to enter the seminary. There were some
very persistent young men who tried to enter the seminary for ten or more times, and
there were others who remained without realizing their calling. There were different
reasons for not admitting students to the seminary (for example, the past of the parents
could play a negative role), but the young men who participated actively in church life or
had contacts with active priests before entering the seminary were usually not admitted.
The representatives of religious cults would state in their reports that “extremistically
disposed young men” were not admitted to the seminary. Many of them realized that
they would not be admitted and, thus, did not even try to enter the seminary.
Another obstacle was the attempts of the KGB to recruit the future priests. The
doors of the theological seminary were quite often closed to the ones who did not
agree to collaborate.33
In addition to the mentioned reasons, prompting the establishment of the under-
ground seminary, a purely psychological factor should be pointed out. Rev. Lionginas
Virbalas, SJ, described this factor precisely: “They do not admit you one year and
they do not admit you the following year, so you must do something. In this case un-
derground studies are a good opportunity to prepare oneself for Holy Orders. It is not
only the opportunity but at the same time an expression of support because a depress-
ing, bad mood is affecting the individual ֊ you want but cannot gain what you desire
and then an alternative appears and this becomes an encouragement”.34

chive of Lithuania (further-CSAL), f. R181, Case of doc. 3, Cases 83,85,88,92,102,104,107,109,

Thus, it can be stated that the candidates who were not admitted to the official
seminary for some reason or other were the real potential for the appearance of the
underground seminary. The underground seminary helped such rejected people to
realize their calling.
It is apparently impossible to ascertain the exact date when the underground theologi-
cal seminary was established. Although the efforts of Rev. Juozapas Zdebskis to establish
an underground seminary of diocese priests are dated quite well but this variant did not
work out.35 It is much more difficult to ascertain the exact date of the establishment of the
underground seminary by the Jesuit and Marian orders. However, perhaps there is no
need to do that because such an occurrence did not appear in a single day. It was part of a
certain process whose source we should seek among the theological students who were
expelled from the Kaunas theological seminary and later finished their studies in secret
and were ordained as underground priests. Rev. Vytautas Merkys, SJ, can serve as a good
example. He was expelled from the seminary in 1959 and ordained as an underground
priest by Bishop Vincentas Sladkevičius on 26 July 1960. He became a Jesuit in 1957 36
This as well as other similar cases can be considered as a prototype of the underground
seminaiy. Concerning die establishment of the underground seminary by the religious
orders we should look at the years 1970-1973. The Jesuits became involved in this work
earlier while the Marian Fathers entered it later. The activities of the underground semi-
nary stopped when significant changes began in Lithuania. One can say that the under-
ground seminary existed for about two decades.
The structure of the underground seminary and the method for investigating its
activities. As it was said above, two different religious orders were in charge of the
studies of underground priests. For this reason the term “underground seminaries” and
not “an underground seminary” would appear to be more appropriate. However,
knowledge about the conditions for the activities of the seminaries and their structural
elements suggests that they should not be treated as separate seminaries because then
we would have to count not one or two, but many more. Institutionally the under-
ground seminary should be considered as a formation, which joined separate segments
for a common goal.
What was the structure of the underground seminary? It was already mentioned
that religious orders organized the underground education of priests, thus the full re-
sponsibility for the theological and spiritual education of priests had to be assumed by
these orders. Often while beginning their underground studies under the care of the
Marian Fathers or Jesuits the young people had already decided that they wanted to
become a member of the order they had chosen for their studies. This was not a rule
always followed, especially in the underground seminary led by the Jesuits. The su-
pervision of the religious order was mandatory in a juridical respect because accord-
ing to canon law a priest has to be directly subordinate either to the hierarchy of a

diocese or a religious order. Thus, the inner structure of the particular religious order
also determined the organization of the underground seminary. Some elements of the
internal life in both religious orders were different and therefore the seminary led by
the Jesuits was different from the seminary led by the Marian Fathers. There were
some features which existed in only one or the other seminary (for example, the
Marian Fathers also cared for seminarians of other countries, such as Ukraine, Byelo-
russia, Estonia). However, the essential elements of organizing theamderground stud-
ies were identical and, moreover, the religious orders coordinated their actions.
The underground seminary did not have some of the elements common to a regu-
lar seminary’. There was no rector, although it can be stated that the head of the reli-
gious order fulfilled these duties since he would recommend to the bishop that the
student was prepared for ordination. The underground seminary did not have a spiri-
tual father and lectures were not read in the usual manner. The education of the semi-
narians was organized on the principle of individual and independent studies. The
lecturers of the seminary only held discussions and explained things that were not
understood; the main task of the lecturer was to check the knowledge of the seminar-
ian and determine if he understood the subject. The underground seminarians studied
according to the program of the Kaunas theological seminaiy and its textbooks, the
so-called scripts. The students of the underground seminary (but not all of them)
would live and work (most often as sacristans) in one of the parishes. The ordinations
of the new priests were conducted secretly and they were conducted by either Bishop
Julijonas Steponavičius or Bishop Vincentas Sladkevičius.
The conspiratorial organization of the underground studies also determined that
contrary to usual practices, no archives of their work were kept. There is also only a
little material in the archives of the state institutions, which controlled the activities of
the Church, according to which one could determine about the activities and the struc-
ture of the underground seminary as an educational institution. Therefore, some other
way has to be found to reconstruct the activities of the underground theological semi-
nary. The reconstruction of documentary material is possible only by gathering au-
thentic testimonies of the persons involved in its activities. The sum total of these tes-
timonies collected in different ways should be considered as the archives of the un-
derground seminary, which a historian can use in investigating various aspects of the
underground studies.
The contents of the collection of documents. The collection of documents consists of
two parts. The first part contains documents devoted to research of the history of the
underground seminary or in other words what we called the archives of the underground
seminary. They are the authentic testimonies of the organizers of this seminary and of
the persons who studied in it — the responses to the questionnaire, conversations, and
memoirs. There are also some archival documents, mostly from personal archives.
The second part consists of the original texts of lectures given by three teachers of the
underground theological seminary. (The language of the texts is edited.) A copy of the
manuscript lectures of Cardinal Sladkevičius are published at the end of the collection.
A short presentation of every author.
Summary
727
Rev. Justinas Algirdas Vaičiūnas (1928-1994) had a very complicated life.37 He
did not study in the underground seminary, but prepared for priesthood independently
and was ordained by Bishop Steponavičius. He was involved in the underground stud-
ies as a teacher in the underground seminary organized by Rev. Juozas Zdebskis. His
manuscript legacy is not copious. The text presented in this collection shows him as
an author who matured in the underground.
It is much more difficult to describe the written legacy of Rev. Pranciškus Rači-
ūnas, MIC, (1919-1997), the second author, whose texts are printed in the collection.
A more thorough study is needed or at least a more detailed examination of his ar-
chive, which is kept in the manuscript department of the Library of Vilnius Univer-
sity. The themes of his legacy are very diverse. They include studies of the history of
the state of Lithuania and the Church of Lithuania from ancient to the most recent
times as well as works on theological, spiritual, catechetic, and ethic topics; biogra-
phies of famous people; translations and vast quantities of other works collected from
various sources.
The collection includes the work “Asceticism. Part V. Chapter I. Methods for
Educating an Individual”. What does such a complex title mean? The answer can be
found in the program presented in the first part: “The Programs of Spiritual Studies”.
The fifth section of the chapter of this program “Ascetic Theology” states: “The Role
of the Person Himself: Fighting Sin. Fostering Virtues”. Račiūnas included the prob-
lems of asceticism in his multi-volume work “The Culture of the Soul.” Several of his
articles which help explain better the activities of the underground seminary are pub-
lished in the first part of the collection.
Rev. Jonas Lauriūnas, SJ, (1924-1991) is the third author who also left a copious
archive of manuscripts.38 He translated religious and theological works from French,
German, English, and Polish into Lithuanian. He also actively participated in the un-
derground press.39 But Lauriūnas is known most as the author of sermons. He gath-
ered his sermons in a collection he entitled “Words to Brothers.” which consist of
about 50 volumes. These sermons were secretly distributed. This collection also in-
cludes the series of lectures, “Conversations about Monastic Life” written by Lauri-
ūnas in 1975-1990. This material can be considered as literature devoted to monastic
upbringing, and monastic upbringing was an essential element for the underground
theological seminary.
The collection concludes with a copy of the text of lectures given by Cardinal
Vincentas Sladkevičius, MIC in the Kaunas theological seminary.
