| adam_text | SUMMARY
The aim of this publication is to present the process of forming the history of
historiography and methodology of history as well as an attempt to assess the
Polish and Ukrainian output in these fields. The most crucial problems connected
with their further development have also been noted.
In the first part of this book Jerzy Matemicki has discussed the history of
historiography in Poland in a detailed and critical manner. It was bom in years
1948-1958 and its methodological premises were determined by Marian Henryk
Serejski in 1948. The first university Department of History of Historiography
was established in Warsaw in 1958. In 1960-2000 approximately 140 mono-
graphs and collective works devoted mainly to Polish historiography were pub-
lished in Poland. Contemporarily, as it has been noted by the author, historio-
graphic research is conducted by approximately 70-80 people out of which 30
are professional historiography historians dealing mainly (and often exclusively)
with this field. The majority of them are professors and doctors (doktor habil-
itowany) concentrated in several university departments of historiography histo-
ry and related fields. However, it is a worrying fact that relatively few young
people are specialized in this field. Also the number of classes on this subject
decreases. The fact that the historiographic problems are of interest for history
methodologists and representatives of other related historical sub-fields (science,
idea, education etc. historians) should be considered as a positive phenomenon.
The studies on Polish historical thought were developed relatively best in the
19th and 20th century and in particular historical environments (Warsaw, Cracow,
especially Lviv). Still few works on world historiography are published. The
following should be postulated: 1) initiation of a new serious discussion on the
subject and tasks of historiography history and its relation to history methodolo-
gy; 2) preparing the synthesis of Polish historiography history; 3) elaborating
and publishing Bibliography of Polish histo; 4) establishing a specialist
scientific journal; 5) continuation of cooperation with Ukrainian historiography
historians, and 6) establishing cooperation with representatives of this sub-field
in other countries.
Articles by Andrzej Wierzbicki and Rafał Stobiecki correspond with the text
by Jerzy Matemicki. The first one has discussed widely the scientific and organi-

zational activity of the aforementioned “animator of Polish historiography histo-
ry after World War II” Marian Henryk Serejski. Among scientific achievements
of this scientist special attention should be paid to his works on the history of the
idea of united and divided Europe — I jedności karolińskiej. Studium nad
genezą wspólnoty europejskiej w średniowieczu, (1937) and Europa a rozbiory
Polski, Studium historiograficzne (1970), and among the organizational activity
֊ establishing the first in Poland institution dealing with studies on historiog-
raphy history (1953) within the History Institute of Polish Academy of Sciences
and introducing this field into the curriculum of historical academic studies.
The author of the article attempts to prove the thesis that after World War II the
modem shape of Polish historiography history was created by the environment
of participants of pre-war seminars conducted by Marceli Handelsman, who
were inspired by the idea of their master. Rafał Stobiecki has concentrated on
showing the place of historiography history in the structure of historical sciences
and in university didactics; he also discussed its most interesting study fields. He
has also noticed that contemporary historiography history should react to changes
appearing in the modem reception of the past occurring in the public space. In
the last thirty years assumptions on which historical investigation and presenta-
tion were based have been questioned since history emerged as a professional
field in the 19 century. Due to this reason the contemporary model of historio-
graphy history ought to be re-considered as an academic field.
Iryna Kolesnyk from Kiev and Volodymyr Sklokin from Kharkiv have dis-
cussed changes occurring in the model of Ukrainian historiographic studies.
According to Kolesnyk the present-day state of Ukrainian historiography is char-
acterized by the practice of updating and re-semantization of its concept. Nowa-
days, resulting from the principles of post-critical science new concepts emerge
while the old ones gain different meanings (e.g. notions like „interdisciplinary”,
„mode of thought”, „mental cartography”, „network theory”, „intellectual com-
munity”, „Realms of Memory” etc.). According to the author the concept history
historiography is an efficient method of representation of contemporary histori-
ography as a theory and history of science as well as a method of representation
of the way of creating linguistic behaviors of a historian. Sklokin, on the other
hand, discusses the influence of postmodernism on the Ukrainian historical sci-
ence. If Ukraine is to be compared with the countries of West Europe and North
America, the Ukrainian discussion on postmodernism has not been about origi-
nal or intense. However, the peculiarity of Ukrainian debate has been about its
ideologisation and attachment to questions of deconstruction of traditional
schemes of national history. Postmodernism had a significant influence on re-
search practice of West-oriented part of historians’ community, however, Ukrain-
ian historians have not yet proposed any attempt of originally combining local

experience with postmodernist inspirations as it happened in case of Poland or
Russia.
The set of these reflections is concluded by the text by Joanna Pisulinska on
the staff situation of Polish historiography history and history methodology as
well as on the presence of both these fields in curricula of historical studies. Spe-
cialized departments of historiography history and history methodology exist at
present at fourteen Polish universities. In recent years frequent changes of de-
partment names have taken place proving that both these fields are getting close
together; employees of those departments undertake both historiographic and
theoretical and methodological reflection in their studies. A significant initiative
was the establishment of the Historiographic Society in 2011, which raised hopes
for strengthening the institutional background of historiography history and his-
tory methodology. The Society has over 70 members from Poland and Ukraine.
In the second part of the book articles dedicated to the output of Polish and
Ukrainian historians on historiography history and history methodology have
been presented. Jerzy Matemicki has analyzed the currents of interests since the
times of Dlugosz through enlightenment and romanticism, then positivism,
modernism and neoromanticism, and finally the period of the second Polish Re-
public. As he has noticed the output of years 1918-1939 in historiographic re-
search was significant enough to allow for its future (after 1945) independence
and the establishment of historiography history as a separate sub-field of history.
Viotella Julkowska has showed Joachim Lelewel’s input in the academic history
of historiography and history methodology from the perspective of a few inter-
connected problems, i.e., firstly shaping Lelewel’s intellectual formation charac-
teristic for the period of the turn of enlightenment and new currents from the
beginning of the 19th century; secondly, scientific and educational activity of this
historian at the Vilnus university; thirdly through the prism of the reception of
his methodological views done by students participating in world history lectures
in Vilnus in years 1815-1818 and 1822-1824. Despite the existing since the
middle of the 19th century difference in the assessment of Lelewel’s historical
achievements, historiography historians in agreement appreciate the break-
through significance of methodological works by Lelewel, especially their influ-
ence on the change in understanding the tasks of history as a field of scientific
studies. Alfred Toczek described a group of Lviv historians at the period of Gali-
cian autonomy interested in history of historiography and history methodology.
Both sub-fields were researched by 26 historians sensu stricto who were 19
Polish, 4 Ukrainians, 2 Austrian Germans and 1 Jew. These include Szymon
Askenazy, Bronislaw Dembinski, Ludwik Finkel, Mychal Hruszewski, Ksawery
Liske, Wladyslaw Lozinski, Antonii Malecki, Aleksandr Semkowicz, Izydor
Szaraniewicz, Tadeusz Wojciechowski and Henryk Zeissberg. Mariola Hoszow-

ska has included one of those historians Ludwik Finkel in the group of the 19th
century forerunners of historiography history. Not only studies on old but also on
contemporary historians (Karol Szajnocha), published articles, given speeches
and lectures at the Lviv University in which he presented an outline of world
historiography history for a few years are a confirmation that he paid a lot of
attention to historiographic problems. In this kind of research he saw an oppor-
tunity to widen the field of observation of a historian to include connections be-
tween the view on the past and the epoch in which those views formed and de-
veloped. He makes scientific progress dependent on the perfection of the histori-
cal method and the use of achievements of related sciences (in the 19th century
social and economic ones). Probably he thought that the knowledge on changes
in history science may be helpful in maintaining relative objectivism. Vitaliy
Telvak discussed the place of Mychajl Hrushevskyi in historiographic discus-
sions at the end of the 19th and in the 20th century. He stated that the scheme of
the Ukrainian historical process constructed by the scientist resonated the most
with the contemporary scholars. The author of the article has found the presence
of the historiosophic reflection of Hrushevskyi even in contemporary historio-
graphic discourse. Ukrainian historians also noticed the influence of Hrushev-
skyi’s organizational activity on the Ukrainian humanities at his times and later.
Then, Vitaliy Masnenko has showed the significance of Vyacheslav Lypynski
(Wacław Lipiński) for Ukrainian historiography history and history methodolo-
gy. He has emphasized that for part of his contemporary peers he was a symbol
of a historian-statesman. The analysis of Lypynski’s vision in the context of neo-
romanticism allows to weaken this stereotype and form a more complete image
of a historian. Jolanta Kolbuszewska has discussed the “Lodz historiographic
school”. She has characterized a group of researchers personally related to their
scientific master, pioneer and initiator of postwar studies on Polish historio-
graphy history Marian Henryk Serejski. This personal bond, influence on coope-
rators, disciples had in this case both direct and indirect character. And thus,
“direct” disciples of Serejski were according to generation and research experi-
ence, Franciszek Bronowski, Andrzej Feliks Grabski and Jerzy Włodarczyk. In
the mentioned seminar, among others, Krystyna Śreniowska nad Jozef Dutkie-
wicz also participated. In the further part of the text the author has briefly pre-
sented the representatives of the school and fields of their interest.
The other texts are of more detailed character and they are devoted to select-
ed historiography problems from the 19։h and 20th century. Ivan Kutsyi has ana-
lyzed stereotypical presentations of the East and the West in historical texts by
Ukrainian past investigators from East Galicia in years 1830—1890. He has ex-
plained how historians „inscribed” the historical picture of Rus’/Ukraine in the
system of East-West; with which of these two spaces they identified themselves,

which historical facts/events/and personages they related their “eastness” or
“westness” to, how they contrasted the images of their “native” and “alien”
space. Leonid Zashkilnyak has characterized the achievements of Ukrainian
historians in the field of modernization of studies on national history in the in-
terwar period. A leading role was played in this process by historians gathering
around the secret Ukrainian University, Scientific Society named by Szewczen-
ko, Ukrainian Research Institute and social organizations. In Ukrainian historiog-
raphy the state direction almost absolutely ruled, which included known repre-
sentatives of old and young generation ֊ I. Krypjakevich, O. Terlecki, S. To-
mashivski and others. Thanks to them in the interwar period a new state concept
of the Ukrainian history was elaborated which similarly to M. Hrushevskyi’s
scheme was supposed to a scientific justification of political desires of Ukrainian
elite and at the same time it could bring Ukrainian historiography closer to the
European one. In this way missing parts of the Ukrainian historiography result-
ing from repression experienced by intellectual elite in Soviet Ukraine were
made up for. Despite constant tension in Polish-Ukrainian relations Ukrainian
historians could use available possibilities to enrich Ukrainian historical thought
and they strengthened its scientific foundations. Generally it corresponded to
developmental tendencies in world historiography. Lidiya Lazurko has discussed
the picture of the Ukraine history presented in “Kwartalnik Historyczny” (“His-
torical Quarterly”) in the interwar period. The analysis of numerous reviews of
works by Ukrainian historians allows to conclude that Ukrainian and Polish his-
torians obeyed similar theoretical and methodological principles. It also proves
openness and tolerance of the editing board of the journal in spite of difficult at
that time Polish-Ukrainian relations. Wasyl Pedycz has presented the output of
Myron Korduba, an eminent Ukrainian historian, archaeographer, ethnologist,
bibliographer, social activist and professor of the Warsaw University (1929-
1939) and the Lviv University (1944-1947). M. Korduba is an author of over
500 published historical works based on wide source material. Korduba took into
account a vast historical period (since the beginnings of the Slavic epoch to the
20th century). In the center of his interest there was still the history of the Kozak
land and wars at the time of Bohdan Chmielnicki. Vitalii Iaremchuk has de-
scribed main directions and achievements of investigations into the history of
Ukrainian Soviet historiography. The author has proposed his own view on these
problems. He has drawn attention to the need to use the experience of historians
studying similar problems in other countries especially those being in the sphere
of communist regimes.
The publication is concluded by three texts concerning history methodology,
its place in the European humanities and the significance of methodological re-
flection for the research practice of historians. Volodymyr Vashchenko has ana-

lyzed the theoretical boundaries of using two models of functioning methodolo-
gy in the process of historical and historiographic investigation described as the
“paradox of metamethodology”. The core of this paradox is that the “subject
matter” of the historiographic study is also its method. Eugeniusz Koko has pre-
sented Roman Wapinski’s (1931-2008) methodological views, who was one of
the most eminent historians of the second part of the 20th and the beginning of
the 21st century. Wapinski places history between science and art. He wrote a lot
about the influence of contemporaneity on the research. He was mainly interest-
ed in the long-term phenomena and particularly in those things which „condition
principal changes in the way of thinking”. He also emphasized the necessity to
view Polish history in a wider context of global history. He also stresses the need
to pay greater attention to the critique of the source and also to reach for sources
not so often used like belle-lettres. The subject of Anna Ziçbinska-Witek’s article
is methodological analysis of Polish historiography connected with Holocaust
and an attempt to reconstruct the ideal of historic science obeyed by researchers
which describe the sense and aim of their cognitive activity. In debates on litera-
ture of the Extermination conflicts over the factographic layer are repeated and
the methodological and theoretical issues are left aside. The author analyzes,
among others, methodological postulates by Jan Tomasz Gross describing “new”
approach to sources, the way of understanding the historical truth or the lan-
guage of narration and also the issue of uniqueness and problems of representa-
tion of “difficult” knowledge. The text also discusses a controversial and rarely
questioned problem of writing the narration from the perspective of victims and
consequences of accepting this kind of viewpoint.
