Zusammenfassung: | "An American "Dreyfus Affair" By all accounts, Uriah Phillips Levy, the first Jewish commodore in the U.S. Navy, was both a principled and pugnacious man. On his way to becoming a flag officer, he was subjected to six courts-martial and engaged in a duel, all in response to antisemitic taunts and harassment from his fellow officers. Yet he never lost his love of country or desire to serve in its navy. When the navy tried to boot him out, he took his case to the highest court and won. This richly detailed historical novel closely follows the actual events of Levy's life-running away from his Philadelphia home to serve as a cabin boy at age ten; his service during the War of 1812 aboard the Argus and internment at the notorious British prison at Dartmoor; his campaign for the abolition of flogging in the Navy; and his purchase and restoration of Monticello as a tribute to his personal hero, Thomas Jefferson. Set against a broad panorama of U.S. history, Commodore Levy describes the American Jewish community from 1790 to 1860, the beginnings of the U.S. Navy, and the great nautical traditions of the Age of Sail before its surrender to the age of steam"--""A novel focusing on the life of Uriah Philips Levy, the first Jewish commodore in the US Navy."--Provided by publisher"-- |

With an introduction by Michael Berenbaum Rev. ed. Lubbock, TX Texas Tech Univ. Press [u.a.] 2014 XXIV, 304 S. Ill., Kt. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references (pages 255-294) and index "An American "Dreyfus Affair" By all accounts, Uriah Phillips Levy, the first Jewish commodore in the U.S. Navy, and the great nautical traditions of the Age of Sail before its surrender to the age of steam"--""A novel focusing on the life of Uriah Philips Levy, the first Jewish commodore in the US Navy."--Provided by publisher"-- Karski, Jan / 1914-2000 Karski, Jan 1914-2000 (DE-588)119295849 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1939-1945 gnd rswk-swf World War, 1939-1945 / Underground movements / Poland / Biography Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) / Poland Jews / Persecutions / Poland Geschichte Juden Weltkrieg (1939-1945) Information (DE-588)4026899-8 gnd rswk-swf Besetzung (DE-588)4006020-2 gnd rswk-swf Untergrundbewegung (DE-588)4186983-7 gnd rswk-swf Judenvernichtung (DE-588)4073091-8 gnd rswk-swf Alliierte (DE-588)4001297-9 gnd rswk-swf Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 gnd rswk-swf Poland / History / Occupation, 1939-1945 Poland / Ethnic relations Polen Polen (DE-588)4046496-9 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4006804-3 Biografie gnd-content Karski, Jan 1914-2000 (DE-588)119295849 p Polen (DE-588)4046496-9 g Untergrundbewegung (DE-588)4186983-7 s Geschichte 1939-1945 z 1\p DE-604 Judenvernichtung (DE-588)4073091-8 s Information (DE-588)4026899-8 s Alliierte (DE-588)4001297-9 s 2\p DE-604 Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 s Geschichte z 3\p DE-604 Besetzung (DE-588)4006020-2 s 4\p DE-604 5\p DE-604 Jankowski, Stanisław M. 1945- Verfasser (DE-588)104314001 aut Digitalisierung BSB Muenchen 22 - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=028065498&sequence=000002&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
