| adam_text | POLITICAL PARTIES IN INDEPENDENT UKRAINE
1991-2007
Summary
The main research problems addressed in this work include changes that had proceeded in the
party system of Ukraine in the years 1991-2007, the genesis of political parties and their program
documents, as well as development of individual political parties. This work consists of five chapters.
The first chapter entitled Determinants of the functioning ofpolitical parties in Ukraine provides an
overview of legal bases of the functioning of political parties and evolution of the voting rights.
It also introduces the language-ethnical structure of particular Ukrainian regions as well as issues
concerning the choice of the main direction in international policy, approach to the status of Russian
language and ways of history interpretation - as the factors that affect electoral geography. Furthermore,
it presents the “authority party” - namely an informal political force, which while remaining in power
after independence proclamation had the greatest impact on transformation processes ongoing in
Ukraine. In the second chapter entitled Genesis of the first political parties, the attention was focused
on the development process of democratic organizations and on political parties established on the
eve of Ukraine independence proclamation. The genesis of formation, political programmes and
activities of particular parties were presented as divided into extremely right-wing, right-wing, central-
right, central and central-left groups.
The proclamation of independence and the ban of communist party activity have began a new
stage in the development of Ukrainian political parties. This period was addressed in the third chapter
Political parties at the initial stage of party system development in the independent Ukraine. This
stage of Ukrainian history is characterized by changes that proceeded in both programmes and activities
of the existing political parties as well as by the formation of a number of new political groups.
Of these, the most popular became the leftist groups, including: Socialist Party of Ukraine, Ukrainian
Peasant Party and reactivated in 1993 Communist Party of Ukraine, as well as transformed into
apolitical party - the rightist Peoples’ Movement of Ukraine. The newly established political formations
were discussed in the previous chapters as divided into left-wing, central, central-left, right-wing,
central-right and extremely right-wing. Analysis was also conducted for the pre-term Parliament
elections of 1994.
Profound transformation have occurred on the Ukrainian political scene between Parliament
elections of 1994 and 1998. They were addressed in the fourth chapter of this work entitled Political
parties in the period of political scene reorganization. This chapter introduces parties that have been
continuing their activity - Communist Party of Ukraine, Ukrainian Peasant Movement, Christian-
Democratic Party of Ukraine, All-Ukrainian Union “Hromada”, Social-Democratic Party of Ukraine
(united), and Green Party of Ukraine; as well as newly-formed parties - Peoples’ Democratic Party,
Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine, Agrarian Party of Ukraine, “Reforms and Order” Party, Party of
Regional Revival of Ukraine and election coalitions established for the Parliament election of 1998 -
Election Coalition of the Socialist Party of Ukraine and the Peasant Party of Ukraine “For the Truth, For
the Nation, for Ukraine!”, Election Coalition “Working Ukraine” and Election Coalition “National
Front”. Furthermore, analysis was carried out regarding results of the Parliament elections of 1998.
The onset of the stabilization (consolidation) process of the party system of Ukraine was
significantly affected by the Parliament elections of2002. Therefore, a major part of the fifth chapter
of this work Political parties in the period of stabilization of the party system was devoted to

transformations that had proceeded on the Ukrainian political scene in the period immediately preceding
this Parliament election. The chapter discusses election coalitions established for the Parliament
election of 2002 - Election Coalition of Wiktor Juszczenko “Our Ukraine”, Election Coalition
of Julia Tymoszenko, Election Coalition “For the Only One Ukraine!”, and parties that had decided to
stand alone in these elections - Communist Party of Ukraine, Socialist Party of Ukraine, and Social-
Democratic Party of Ukraine (united). Furthermore, this chapter elaborates on the impact of President
elections of 2004 on the stabilization of the party system and discusses Parliament elections of 2006
and 2007 which confirmed the consolidation of the party system of Ukraine.
