Cinema in Bulgaria. Part 2 (1956-1969)_ _ Summary he watershed period of the recent past marked by sharp the late fifties and the ear ideological and class conflicts, as ly sixties was one of the most to dy provoke the consciousness of namic stages in the development the members of the audience by of the Bulgarian cinema. In the raising topical (pestions about the span of only a few years it made a moral integrity and determination great qualitative leap forward and of the individual and the belief in established its artistic identity and the ideal. The characters of those originality of thinking. The peri films rebel against the erosive ef od saw a series of frank and bold fects of alienation, suspiciousness films which adopted a new ap and the consumerist attitude to proach to the anti-fascist resistance life. In this sense, those films per of the people - one that changed formed a healthy ethical function the subject with topical moral and and filled in their own way the ethical messages. The monumental void created by lack of films deal and ornamental style of the previ ing convincingly with the prob ous years was replaced by a more lems of contemporary life. It is true that the Bulgarian down-to-earth approach which brought to the fore ordinary peo film industry was turning out ap ple who had assumed the responsi proximately equal numbers of bility of class warfare in the name anti-fascist films and films about of their ideals. Such films as ON A contemporary life, but the latter SMALL ISLAND (dir. Rangel Val- had to get rid of the

Cinema in Bulgaria. Part 2 (1956-1969) closer to the films of the preceding period as some of them still bore the mark of primitive formulas of dogmatism. Another aspect of change that was taking place in the Bulgarian cinema was the greater attention to problems of artistic form and style. The thematic breakthrough achieved by the abovementioned films was accompanied by inno vative explorations in the field of cinematic expression. The erro neous belief that form was of sec ondary importance and that the aesthetic significance of a film depended above all on its content was abandoned. The new artistic thinking was inextricably linked to the search for individual style and the use of a wider range of means of expression. Greater associative wealth of expression, a more fre quent use of metaphor in imagery and editing, the use of several nar rative levels, diversity in the use of rhythm and montage became the order of the day. The ascetism and stilted style of the past were gradu ally replaced by more sophisticated messages and complex psychologi cal portraits; the nonlinear narra tive was giving way to wealth and variety in the treatment of subject matter. The film-makers showed greater trust in the members of the audience as potential со-au- * thors who were not only capable of following the narrative with con centration and understanding, but could also discover hidden mean ings and relations for themselves. There is no doubt that all this raised the artistic level of the Bul garian cinema, and brought it into line with similar trends in the Bul garian
literature and art of that time. Bulgarian films managed to come out of their isolation, ap pear the international screen as an original artistic phenomenon and find a place in world cinema. Along the pioneers Zahari Zhandov, Anton Marinovich, Boncho Karastoyanov, Emil Rashev and Vassil Holiolchev, a new genera tion of film-makers such as Dako Dakovski, Rangel Valchanov, Binka Zhelyazkova, Borislav Sharaliev, Nikola Korabov, Hristo Piskov, Angel Wagenstein, Valeri Petrov, Hristo Ganev, Dimo Kolarov and others got established and contrib uted to the artistic evolution and maturity of our national cinema. This defining period was re markably rich in artistic develop ments. It proved that our young film industry could do more than just turn out films. The best films of that period made meaningful artistic discoveries using the rich imagery of the art of film. They sought to establish a rapport with the film-going public on the basis of intellectual empathy and com munity of views in dealing with complex narrative structures. This rapport between the film-makers and their audience did not de pend so much on the subject and the theme, as had been the case 181
Александър Ipojeß ^^ Киното в България. Част II (1956-1969) during the fifties, as on the style of expression and ideas requiring greater intellectual effort. The greater sophistication of the artistic message, attention to universally valid conflicts and problems, and the introduction of more adequate characteriza tion bolstered the public authority of the young Bulgarian cinema. Certain films began a dialog with other areas of our national culture and thus carved a niche for them selves in the nation’s cultural life as a whole, intertwining into its rich tapestry. The cinema was no longer on the fringes of cultural life but had found its place in the growth and evolution of the national cul ture. While these artistic progresses were under way, Bulgarian Cine matography was being equipped with modern production facilities. The Film City near Sofia opened at the beginning of the sixties. Its production capacity - about ten feature films a year - correspond ed to the artistic potential of our cinema at the time and satisfied’ the demands of film distribution. Given these better production conditions, coupled with increased artistic potential, Bulgarian film-makers began to extend their range in an attempt to change the existing genre and thematic struc ture of the output and open up new artistic horizons. Of course the results did not always live up to expectations, but it was obvious that our cinema was moving in 482 the right direction. That made it possible to avoid the harmful con sequences of stagnation and self repetition, and enabled film-mak ers of each new
generation to ex press their attitude to reality. In view of the artistic amorphousness, schematics and underdevelopment of contemporary theme, Bulgari an Cinematography took particu lar care to encourage the making of films dealing with contempo rary subjects. Established authors were drawn into screenwriting, films featuring contemporary he roes were expected to meet high er standards, and inspiration and ideas were drawn from celebrated works of literature. In spite of some ups and downs, and the doubtful quality of some of the results, the con temporary theme began to get out of its rut, to shed the self-im posed stereotypes and artistic cli chés. Such films as THE STEEP PATH (dir. Yanko Yankov, scr. Kosta Strandzhev), TWO UNDER THE SKY (dir. Borislav Sharaliev, scr. Angel Wagenstein), THE INSPECTOR AND THE NIGHT (dir. Rangel Valchanov, scr. Bogo mil Raynov), SUN AND SHADOW (dir. Rangel Valchanov, scr. Valeri Petrov), THE SHE-WOLF (dir. Rangel Valchanov, scr. Hail Oli ver), THERE IS NO DEATH (dir. Hristo Piskov, scr. Todor Monov), and CHRONICLE OF THE SENTIMENTS (dir. Lyubomir Sharlandzhiev, scr. Todor Monov)
Cinema in Bulgaria. Part 2 (1956-1969) introduced into the Bulgarian cin ema the breath of life in the row, as well as the hopes and conflicts of ordinary people. Though hesitant ly, with artistic imperfections and a certain immaturity, the screen began to show authentic and de void of adornment contemporary life by portraying ordinary people in whose thoughts and actions the audience could recognize elements of their own existence. Though they possessed some of the char acteristics of thesis films, and their conflicts did not always seems suf ficiently convincing, without those films the Bulgarian cinema would not have been able to put across some of its subsequently move ar tistic powerful artistic messages and revelations so convincingly. Those films were in fact a stepping stone towards acute observations and deep discoveries that crystal lized into real achievements years later. MODAY MORNING (dir. Hristo Piskov and Irina Aktasheva, scr. Nikola Tiholov), A KNIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR (dir. Bo rislav Sharaliev, scr. Valeri Petrov), THE WHITE ROOM (dir. Metodi Andonov, scr. Bogomil Raynov), SIDETRACK (dir. Grisha Ostro vski, scr. Blaga Dimitrova) and SWEDISH KINGS (dir. Lyudmil Kirkov, scr. Nikolay Nikiforov) were milestones in the efforts of the Bulgarian cinema to recreate contemporary reality. Apart from the photographic reproduction of reality, those films were concerned with the meaning of life and its honest and unmasked representa tion of reality. They contained not simply observations, but meaning ful conclusions about society and its evolution. The
imitation of life was replaced by full-blooded char acters and conflicts involving some of the essential problems of exist ence, and the system of human moral values. The makers of those films had managed to identify sig nificant conflicts reflecting the real contradictions in life: they probed into the inner world of our human ity to better comprehend the ways of thinking and the moral views of the characters. It is this kind of ap proach that is responsible for the poignancy of those films, their so cially committed attitude against consumerism, misconceptions of maturity and cold egoism. Most of the films adopt a confessional tone which at times evolves into a mer ciless reexamination of the past. They owe their success to bold ar tistic ideas, the depth and maturi ty of cinematic thinking of their makers, and the significance of the problems they deal with. Along with the successful evolution of the contemporary theme, Bulgarian film-makers continued to take a keen interest in anti-fascist subjects. Their ar tistic approach to those themes also underwent interesting trans formations. Such films as Vaio Radev’s THE PEACH THIEF, TSAR AND GENERAL and THE 483
Агександър Ipojeß ^ Киното в България. Част П (1956-1969) LONGEST NIGHT, Georgi Stojanov’s THE PENLEVE CASE and BIRDS AND GREYHOUNDS, and Lyubomir Sharlandzhiev’s THE CHAIN are notable for their more philosophical treatment of the historical material and the use of stylistic means that were new to our cinema. They included frank philosophical dialogues about the means and ends of political strug gle (TSAR AND GENERAL). They revealed, by means of grotesque, the deformity and spiritual desti tution of militarism (BIRDS AND GREYHOUNDS), and examined the existential implications of he roic deeds (THE CHAIN). These developments were expanding the traditional artistic range of the Bulgarian Cinema. They gave ev idence of the scope and depth of its processes and self evolution, and proved its ability to discover new horizons. At that time several generations of film-makers such Vaio Radev, Georgi Stoyanov, Ed ward Zhachariev, Metodi Andonov, Atanas Tassev, Todor Stojanov, Bo rislav Punchev, Emil Wagenstein and others were in the process of establishing their individual styles, thus helping to demonstrate the wealth of the artistic potential of the Bulgarian cinema and expand ing its stylistic range. In light of those indisputable achievements, the sixties may ap pear to be an uneventfully calm yet quite fruitful period. A closer 484 look at the film industry, however, reveals the complexity of the pro cess, the painful and contradictory artistic endeavours, and the vicissi tudes and failures in the realization of certain projects. Furthermore, during that decade, the
Bulgarian cinema underwent situations of crisis when it groped to discover an artistic alternative to mediocri ty and simplistic artistic thinking. Some of its setbacks were caused by the slavish imitation of import ed screen models which were alien to the artistic nature and traditions of the Bulgarian cinema. These situations occasionally generated tension and concern, and this was reflected in some of the films made during the period. However, this sort of problem is nat ural in the de velopment of any national cinema that seeks to establish its own iden tity while trying to ride the crest of the wave of world cinema. The young Bulgarian cinema was not immune to such moments of crisis, its own immaturity, the relatively small production capacity (about fifteen films a years in late sixties), and the change of generations and styles. Fortunately these moments of crisis were brief and there were always films which maintained high standards of artistic experi ence. That made even the skeptics realize that despite temporary set backs and difficulties our national cinema would continue to develop towards artistic maturity. |
