344 Małgorzata Nieszczerzewska like a synonym of the Unknown and the Mystery, are captured and recorded for eternity by the use of a camera lens. Abandoned places in photographs “are” anew (“And there was light”), they move from non-existence to existence, the passing of time is symbolically stopped. This complementary contrast between light and shadow intensifies also, often intended, the effect of inscenization or theatralization of place. The “that has been” in the context of the photographs collected in the album Beauty in Decay makes place to the “that has been performed”. As a result of different aesthetic and technical measures these pictures I contrast to those mentioned above, lose their documentary dimension, their neutrality, nat ural character, impersonality and simplicity. Image undergoes a certain manipulation in this way. A photograph of an abandoned place is in this case, according to Pete Turner, not only an inscenization and a play, but also invention.59 In contrast to the former examples, photographs in the album Beauty in Decay are not signed. If we do not read the last page with the list of places and the names of au thors, we can be contended with the aesthetic re ception of the anonymous photograph. Therefore, we do not know the localisation and the history of the place. It is a universalized archive, an imagery of inconcrete and unnamed ruins. A singular image of a degraded place becomes in this case a pretext to creation of one’s own alternative history, an al ternative memory of a place, its past, present and even future. As Ian Douglas-Jones
writes, this kind of image reminds us that every place can become a ruin in the future. Therefore, it generates memory of inevitable evanescence.60 The photo archives of abandoned architecture are places where time has stopped. They are dis tinguished, like other archetypal archives (rooms with hundreds of shelves and drawers), by a spe cific quiescence, motionlessness and the accumu lation of many “asynchronic moments”. One may paraphrase the words of Marianne Hirsch and say that in these photographies we see buildings look ing ahead towards a future theye will never have. And the photograph’s temporal irony elicts here mourning and empathy.61 For Dylan Trigg aban doned places function both out-of-time, and out- 59 Soulages (2007: 85). 60 Douglas-Jones (2009). 61 Grant (2003: 64). of-place as well.62 In the above-mentioned context, the collections of photographs resemble a derelict place. Understanding both “that has been” and “that is actually being” as well, may be here only fragmentary, similar to a memory as a field where different times coexist - the time of the subject, of the photographer and of the viewer.63 Bibliography Buczyńska-Garewicz 2006 = Buczyńska-Garewicz, Hanna: Miejsca, strony, okolice.
