Zavod za znanstveni i umjetnički rad u Osijeku Hrvat-
ske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti posebnu pozornost
usmjerio je istraživanju povijesti Osijeka i dijela Slavoni-
je od prapovijesti do sadašnjosti. Saznanja tih istraživa-
nja obuhvaćena su u tiskanim knjigama o nalazima pra-
povijesnih artefakata, antičkih spomenika, romaničkih
i gotičkih građevina i umjetnina, otomanskih konstruk-
cija, te o razvoju novovjekovnoga grada sve do sredine
20. stoljeća s posebnim prikazom osječke secesije i ar-
hitekture početka 20. stoljeća. Kvalitetan je to i obiman
zbir sintetski obrađenih tema, kao okosnice nastavka
istraživanja, produbljivanja saznanja i objavljivanja tih
saznanja hrvatskoj i europskoj javnosti, te međunarod-
nim znanstvenim institucijama. Stoga se pokreće nova,
višejezična, edicija o povijesti Osijeka sa simboličnim
nazivom mursa aeterna (Vječni Osijek), kao para-
fraza poznate sintagme roma aeterna (Vječni Rim).
Osijek s gravitacijskim područjem Slavonije bilježi po-
put Rima i Lacija nekoliko milenija postojanja, višekrat-
nih razaranja, ponovljenih preporoda i sagledavanja po-
željne budućnosti.
Prošlost, sadašnjost i budućnost Vječnog Osijeka s nje-
čarke i arheologinje Danice Pinterović mursa i njeno
The Institute for Scientific and Artistic Work in Osijek,
part of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, has
been especially dedicated to researching the history of
Osijek and part of Slavonia from prehistory through to
the present day. The results of this research were pu-
blished in books about the findings of prehistoric arte-
facts, ancient monuments, Romanesque and Gothic bu-
ildings and art, Ottoman constructions, as well as books
on the development of the Modern Age town until the
mid 20"' century, with a special emphasis on Osijek Art
Nouveau and the architecture of the beginning of the 20'1՛
century. It is a high quality and comprehensive collection
of topics in the form of syntheses, the framework for the
continuation of the research, acquiring more knowledge
and presenting that knowledge to the Croatian and Eu-
ropean public, as well as international scientific institu-
tions. For this purpose a multilingual edition on the hi-
story of Osijek is being published, symbolically entitled
mursa aeterna (Eternal Osijek), a paraphrase of the
famous syntagm roma aeterna (Eternal Rome). lust
like Rome and Lazio, Osijek and areas which gravitate
towards it in Slavonia have recorded several millennia
of existence, including numerous destructions, repea-
ted revivals and perceptions of a desired future.
The content of this edition is the past, the present and
the future of Eternal Osijek and its region, which symbo-
lically begins with a book on ancient Mursa. It is the se-
cond, revised and updated, edition of a previous book by
Danica Pinterovic, an historian and archaeologist from
Osijek, entitled mursa and its place in the time of
antiquity. The book was published in 1978 and based
on the author’s many years of separately published re-
search, which she updated and brought together as an
associate member of the Institute for Scientific and Ar-
tistic Work in Osijek.

CONCLUSION
puno izmijenjenim društveno-političkim, ekonomskim i
robe. U radionicama radili su obrtnici, specijalizirani na
metaloprerađivačku i keramičku proizvodnju. Okolna po-
lja obrađivali su seljaci. Obrana zemlje bila je u rukama
vojnika ratnika. Postojao je dakle organizirani ekonomski
sistem s razvijenim društvenim klasama. Svi ti elementi
govore za naselje na protourbanom stupnju razvoja.
Even though the available monument inventory for the
history of Mursa has always been assessed with utmost
caution, still, many very important and essential data for
determining its history remain indisputable.
According to that data our city has had very old urban
history, preceded by the pre-urban La Tene phase and
succeeded by five centuries of the mature phase devel-
oped from the Roman example. The end of Mursa’s urban
development was its destruction upon the arrival of the
Goths, the Huns and the Avars, and this was when in the
vicinity of its ruins time to time stemmed rural settle-
ments. Osijek was founded only in the 12th century on the
location of today’s Tvrda, as a significant urban centre for
trade and a port on the Drava. However, its social, politi-
cal, economic and ethnic backgrounds were completely
different to old Mursa.
We discussed the Celtic-Pannonian settlement of Mur-
sa with small and large workshops which were producing
metal and ceramic objects, and which imported products
from some remote workshops in the Danube region. There
were roads and waterways leading to Mursa for trade pur-
poses. There was a whole class of merchants who took care
of imports. Workshops were run by craftsmen specialised
for metal works and ceramic production. The nearby fields
were farmed by peasants. The defence of the country was

vojničke kanabe u prvo doba okupacije Panonije. Tu jez-
gru odabrao je Hadrijan u eri pacificirane zemlje, učinio
ju je kolonijom rimskih građana i dodijelio joj romaniza-
torsku ulogu, što znači i civilizatorsku zbog njena položaja
blizu državne granice na domak barbarskom svijetu. Bilo
putu Podunavljem. U tim ostacima ima fragmenata ka-
menog stupovlja s kapitelima i bazama, kamenih pragova,
mramornih oplata, obilja seskvipedala, tegula i imbreksa,
štukature, ulomaka mozaičnih podova, podova od ope-
ka, podne žbuke i teraca, glinenih antefiksa, vodovodnih
cijevi, ciglenog stupovlja hipokausta, a s druge strane i
mnoštva sitnih nalaza iz rimskih kuća i kućanstava. Taj
nas inventar uvjerava daje u Mursi bilo javnih uglednih
nalnom rimskom uzoru.
Natpisi nas obavještavaju 0 ponekim javnim zgradama,
kao 0 tržnici, hramovima, stadionu, sinagogi. No oni nas
također informiraju 0 gradskim funkcionarima, vijeć-
nicima, načelnicima, augustalima i sevirima, 0 carskom
prokuratoru, 0 kolegijima obrtnika, 0 zavjetima građana
i drugom.
forum, centar grada s hramovima i javnim zgradama. I
vine. Morao je tu postojati i aerarium, financijski gradski
ured, domovi za obrtnička kolegija, zgrada za beneficija-
rijsku službu. U gradu su morale postojati i gradske kupke,
i također privatne terme.
in the hands of warrior soldiers. Therefore, there was also
an organised system of economy with developed social
classes. All these elements speak in favour of a settlement
in its pre-urban stage.
Very close to the location is where the Roman Mursa
came to life, whose beginnings are connected with either
an accurately arranged core of Roman citizens (conventus
civium Romanorum) or with military canabae from the
first wave of the occupation of Pannonia. The core was
chosen by Hadrian in the era of pacified land; he estab-
lished a colony of Roman citizens and gave it the role of
a Romanising agent, which also means a civilising role
because Mursa was close to the state border and the bar-
barian world. And that was in 133 CE.
The large amount of Roman material culture has al-
ways impressed both the people of Osijek and foreigners,
ever since the beginning of the 18th century when Marsigli
was passing by on his journey in the Danube region. The
remains include fragments of stone columns with capitals
and bases, stone door cases, marble panelling, a pleni-
tude of seskvipedal, tegulae and imbrices, stucco work,
fragments of floor mosaics, brick flooring, plaster floors
and terraces, clay antefixes, water pipes, brick pillars for
hypocausti, and also many small remains from Roman
homes and households. That inventory makes us believe
that there were respectable public buildings in Mursa,
along with well supplied private houses and homes, of
which some where built in the traditional Roman style.
The inscriptions inform us about the existence of cer-
tain public buildings, such as the market, temples, a sta-
dium, a synagogue. They also provide information about
town officials, councillors, commanders, augustali and
seviri, the imperial procurator, craftsman colleges, the
citizens’ beliefs, and other things.
Each Roman colony was built according a special set of
rules. The crossroads of the most important roads was the
forum, the city centre with temples and public buildings.
Colony Mursa also had a forum with the Temple of Jupiter
and a curia had to have been there too, for the councillors
to meet and sit for their sessions, just like in the Roman
Senate. Besides the market, which might have been on the
forum or not, the forum had to have a basilica, a long build-
ing for civil lawsuits and trade organisation. There had to
have been an aerarium, the city financial office, craftsman s
collegia, a building for beneficiary services. The city must
have had public baths, as well as private thermae. Mursa

Silvanovo, Kibelino, Mitrino i možda još poneko svetište
Postolja kipova
javni trijemovi imali ukrasnih statua. Kameni most kra-
i visokih višečlanih kamenih stela pokrivenih reljefima i
svojih ratova boravio i Marko Aurelije i njegov sin Ko-
mod. Kroz Mursu je prolazio s cijelom svojom porodi-
com 202. godine Septimije Sever pri obilasku limeskih
utvrđenja. Ovdje je boravio car Konstancije za bitke 351.
godine, a navraćao je i poslije, te godine 358. u mjesecu
lipnju ovdje izdaje edikt.
Cibalama, Sirmiumom i drugima.
rimskim kultovima .
Vidjeli smo kako se život u tom razvijenom gradskom
organizmu zajedno sa svim njegovim gradskim institu-
cijama postepeno gasio i nestajao u toku petog stoljeća.
was in the 2nd century CE the seat of the imperial procurator
for Pannonia Inferior. There were many temples, probably
some scattered around the city. Besides Jupiter’s temple on
the forum, the town had a heroon where people celebrated
Hercules, then the shrines of Silvanus, Cybele, Mithras, and
perhaps some other sanctuaries for the believers of mystic
and syncretic cults, and the evidence for their existence are
the votive altars and such found in the area. Sculpture bases
and fragments of stone sculptures support the belief that
public porticos were decorated with sculptures. The stone
bridge was embellished with the statue of goddess Tyche,
the patron of this city on the Drava. There were necropoles
next to the roads outside the city with numerous sarcophagi
and tall stone steale covered with reliefs and inscriptions,
which introduced us with the Mursian mentality and their
beliefs concerning afterlife.
It is highly likely that the founder of Mursa was Em-
peror Hadrian himself and that he established the colony
in person when he stayed there. Marcus Aurelius might
have been passing through Mursa too during one of his
military campaigns, together with his son Commodus.
Septimius Severus went through Mursa with his entire
family in 202 CE when touring the Limes fortifications.
Emperor Constantius was here in 351 CE during a battle,
and he returned several times afterwards, so in June of 358
CE he issued an edict here.
Mursa in the background of the Roman Limes played
not only an important cultural part but also a very delicate
military and political role too, as it lay on an important by-
pass of the Limes road, along which many bloody battles
in Roman history took place, in 260 CE and 351 CE, and
where oscillations were felt for years, as well as movements
and pressures from the neighbouring barbarian lands.
Mursa maintained live mutual trade between impor-
tant Pannonian centres, such as Poetovio, Aquincum, Ci-
balae, Sirmium, and others. Imported goods arrived in
Mursa from all parts of the Empire: the West and the East.
Mursa played a special role in the Christian times,
when Bishop Valens stayed there, when it was an impor-
tant centre of Arianism. Nevertheless, in those times there
were still many more believers and devotees of old Roman
cults.
We could witness the way in which life in that devel-
oped urban organism, together with all its institutions,
slowly faded away and disappeared sometime in the 5th
century CE. |
