| adam_text | This volume overturns conventional approaches to Howard Barker s
theatre by presenting fresh, interdisciplinary, and international
perspectives on it. Grounded in readings of practice, it offers renewed
tools through which to understand, engage with, and stage, Barker s work.
Howard Barker and The Wrestling School have been seen as marginal to
the major concerns of British theatre, problematic in terms of staging,
and challenging in the ideas they explore. Yet Barker s writing career
spans five decades, and he remains the only living writer to have been
given a dedicated season by the Royal Shakespeare Company, while The
Wrestling School produces work of such striking quality that it merited
continuous Arts Council funding for nearly 20 years.
Howard Barker s Theatre: Wrestling with Catastrophe not only contests
existing ways of reading Barker s theatre practice and plays, but also
presents innovative approaches to his work. In doing so, it brings
together a wide range of Barker s aesthetic concerns — text, direction,
design, acting, narrative form, poetry, painting, photography, and theatre
space — and thereby generates a timely and significant re-evaluation of
both dramatist and company.
