Zusammenfassung:"This is the story of an Iowa country boy and of Anatolia College. This pioneer lad's experiences as a teacher and then the head of Anatolia [College] form one of the most interesting chapters of American educational efforts on foreign shores. On November 15, 1890, George E. and Mrs. White reached the campus of the little new College at Marsovan [Merzifon], Turkey. - Now, fifty years later, with the simple modesty and honesty which have always characterized his efforts, he is rendering an account of his stewardship to numbers of Americans who have, by their contributions and other support, mad possible this outpost of American education overseas and of a significant work by himself and his co-workers under the most serious handicaps and throughout the most troublous times. - With the Great Powers grappling in mortal struggle, the eyes of the world focused on the Straits of the Dardanelles, on Turkey, and the Balkans. Although Dr. White's reiniscences were not so written, they form an important background towards an understanding of the problems facing the people of Turkey and the whole of the Near East. - For a half century, he has lived with them, educated them, and shared with them. He lived in Turkey under the Sultans, saw the Young Turk's revolt in 1908, the Balkans' fight for freedom, the first World War, the wrecking of the College, its relocation in a new city, new country, new continent, without a building, a book, a bench, a bed, or a bell. He saw the post-war suffering, and aided in Near East Relief. He knew Mustapha Kemal Ataturk, the strong man of Turkey, and his type of Turkish militarists. He witnessed the inauguration of the new and Parliamentay Regime when the Turks elected to face West; and the Greeks, who first devised democratic institutions, invited Anatolia College, including the Department for Girls, to Thessaloniki, Macedonia, where it is now strongly placed for wide influence" (dust cover).
