New Shelves, Card Catalogues and a Lot of Books All Around
(Jindra Pavelková)
The history of the Rajhrad Library goes hand in hand with the history
of the monastery itself. Its oldest origins date back to the times when the
monastery was founded in the mid-11th century when liturgical books were
very important for the spiritual life of monastic communities. The manu-
script library continued to grow in the 13th, 14lh and 15th centuries; starting
from the 16th century, printed books began to appear in the Rajhrad Library.
However, the library continued to grow based on the needs of the monastic
community and through donations of different benefactors. Systematic lib-
rary development began approximately in the mid-17th century.
In 1703, a library catalogue was started by Augustinián monk
Augustin Kneutgen from Brno. The library collection was divided into ten
fields of specialization, labelled A to K.
When the library collections were expanded under Otmar Conrad,
books were purchased form the leading booksellers in the monarchy, par-
ticularly from Holzmeyer in Gratz (Austria). Between 1804 and 1806,
Conrad had new shelves installed for the library. Books were placed on the
shelves without any apparent rhyme or reason, piling up on galleries and in
window niches. This situation continued until 1818 when the new librarian
Benedikt Richter took charge of the collection.
In 1820, Benedikt Richter was replaced by Victor Schlossar, who con-
tinued the work Richter started. When he was elected the abbot in 1832, he
allocated an annual subsidy of 1,000 goldens for the purchase of books.
In 1864, Maurus Kinter became librarian and when he first assumed
his new position, he most likely started to catalogue the library. He founded
a new manuscript and incunabulum catalogue and also processed a new col-
lection of maps and atlases that can still be found in the historic Rajhrad
Library. Unfortunately, he did not proceed any further as he pursued his
own publishing work. Towards the end of the 19th century, the monastery
faced economic difficulties that were partially resolved by selling some of
its books.
Maurus Kinter left as librarian due to old age in 1919. After that, the
library was administered by Vojtěch Horák for several months, but he was
replaced by Václav Jan Pokorný in the same year. Pokorný would stay in
charge until 1940. The library was also indirectly damaged during the
World War II. During the liberation of Brno, the frontline stopped right
next to Rajhrad for several days and the monastery walls suffered substan-
tial damage.

Abstract
It was under this condition that the library passed to the University
Library in Brno. In addition to needing the work of a librarian to organize
the collections, the library building and depositaries desperately called for
repairs.
Vladislav Dokoupil from the University Library in Brno cared not
only about the actual condition of the library and its collections, but he also
started to inventory the books. He succeeded both in quickly reviewing the
library and placing the piles of unrecorded volumes onto shelves and into
the records. He soon published his first catalogues. In 1973, the library had
to be moved away from the Rajhrad Monastery because of the building’s
deteriorating structural stability. The collection did not return to Rajhrad
until a complete repair of the main hall and depositaries was finished in
2004. In the early 1990s, it was returned to the Order of Saint Benedict un-
der property restitution and was actually handed over to the Order in 2005
when it also passed under the administration of the Museum of Literature in
Moravia, a branch of the Museum of the Brno Region.
The first step taken to make the collection accessible was to scan the
original card catalogue created by Slosar and publish it on the Museum’s
website. In 2008, the slow digitalisation of the library collections began.
From a Cabinet of Curiosities to a Museum
(Lucie Heilandovd)
The Rajhrad Monastery Museum continuously followed the cabinet of
curiosities that was found in the Rajhrad Monastery as early as the 17th cen-
tury. In the 1830s, Rajhrad collections were relocated to a room adjacent to
the library and their comprehensive organization started. Abbot Viktor
Schlossar (abbacy between 1832 and 1854) is believed to be the founder the
Rajhrad Monastery Museum; the definitive form of the museum was shaped
under Abbot Gunther Kalivoda (abbacy between 1854 and 1883) when it
became a general museum of national history, mapping the history of both
the monastery and its surroundings.
The monastery museum with diverse collections substituted a missing
museum of the Rajhrad area that was not founded in Rajhrad until 1945.
The Monastery Museum organized lectures and both the collections and the
library were open to researchers. Upon previous appointment, visitors were
allowed to take a tour or conduct research. The rich collections of the Raj-
hrad Monastery were based, in addition to history studies, on interests of

the Benedictines. The Monastery Museum housed items such as a collection
of weapons, drawings and pieces of art, a collection of minerals and natural
products, including a set of woody plants, herbaria, stuffed birds and minor
mammals and stuffed sea animals. The displays also included different
models of buildings, means of transportation and everyday objects. The mu-
seum also contained popular sculptures, stone fragments such as heads of
columns, clocks and several pieces of furniture. The foundations of the nu-
mismatic collections included coins from the private collections of Viktor
Schlossar, Beda Dudik and Antonin Boček that the monastery purchased.
The museum also boasted a vast archaeological collection built around arte-
facts found during railway construction and monastery land development.
Most archaeological findings were described by Řehoř Volný and Beda
Dudik, who also contributed to these collections. The most interesting ob-
jects found in the monastery included Celtic coins, jewels, vessels, funeral
ums and a stone statue of an Old Slavonic god with two faces. In addition
to archaeological findings, the museum collections also included anthropo-
logical materials. Findings and artefacts were mostly related to the domestic
environment, but the museum expositions were augmented with several for-
eign findings and souvenirs. The museum also housed several objects
donated to the monastery by explorer Emil Holub, who visited Rajhrad in
1900 and 1901.
The Rajhrad Monastery Museum existed until the monastery was for-
cefully closed down in 1950. Since the land reform in 1920, the monastery
had been bankrupt and abbots had to sell off the collections because of fi-
nancial problems; this affected mostly picture galleries and libraries, as well
as some of the museum’s more valuable items. In 1945, the National Histo-
ry Museum for Rajhrad and Surroundings opened through an initiative of
the Rajhrad Museum Society, headed by František Method Žampach and
Karel Uhl. After the monastery was abolished in 1950, the National History
Museum for Rajhrad acquired artefacts that were associated with Rajhrad
and its surroundings from the monastery’s collections.
Beda Dudik and the Beginnings of Archaeology in Moravia
(Richard Mahel)
Beda Dudik was one of the first supporters and occasional researchers
in this newly emerging field, archaeology, and both his theoretical and prac-
tical experience contributed to its results and growing popularisation. Dudik
182
Abstract
helped by significantly promoting and popularising the results of discovery
reports of his times and by his own, often peculiar interpretation of selected
items from the collections of the Moravian Francis Museum in Bmo and the
original Rajhrad collection of archaeological findings, built over a long
period of time in Rajhrad. In this way, he wanted to draw attention to both
the historical and contemporary importance of Moravia and its special posi-
tion within the lands of the original Bohemian Crown and the former mo-
narchy over the Danube. He also kept in mind a special branch methodo-
logy that was only just being formulated and to which he contributed with
his proposal of comparative research into skulls and bones with the aim to
specify the widely discussed issue of dating and its contradictory interpreta-
tion. Nevertheless, he remained a lay archaeologist and went down in his-
tory mostly as a Bmo historian and a later Vienna teacher; during the latter
part of his life, he was also an imperial councillor and an Austrian diplomat.
Ironically, Dudik’s interest in archaeology developed secondarily to
his work as a Moravian historiographer. In relation to his appointment into
this significant position in 1859, he became an independent researcher and
slowly left behind his prolific collaboration with the Historic and Statistical
Section in Moravia. Dudik’s membership was also related to his efforts to
win recognition as a provincial archivist of the estates in Bmo (unsuc-
cessfully between 1849 and 1861) and to obtain further financial and diplo-
matic support from the provincial committee for intended research travels
and for printing partial expert studies.
During his subsequent travels to archives and museums throughout the
Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and in neighbouring countries, he established
important professional contacts and became a member of many compatriot
and provincial historical associations and academic societies, which also
served to open his eyes to archaeology. As a Benedictine monk in Rajhrad,
Dudik knew about the gradual development of the archaeological collection
of the monastery, including the major contributions by Ř. T. Volný to its
being catalogued thorough descriptions. Similarly, Dudik familiarised him-
self with the results of field from the Mohelnice, Olomouc and Bmo regi-
ons. Beda Dudik did not intensively engage in archaeology until 1853 when
this field started to flourish in Moravia and when he had gained sufficient
knowledge and experience to be able to influence its development.
Dudik published his fundamental, albeit simplified and largely sub-
jective opinion on the methodology and results of this new branch of sci-
ence much later in 1875 in the Magazine of the Moravian Association. This
was preceded by several minor pioneer articles; the most important and
thematically most closely-related one was published in German as early as
Abstract

in 1854. In the above article from 1875, based on an original conference pa-
per, Dudik published his views of field methodology, its further develop-
ment and territorial orientation surrounding his research interests in pagan
burial sites in Moravia.
As far as the methodical approaches in archaeology during those times
are concerned, Beda Dudik most valued craniology, comparative linguistics
and osteology. However, since by themselves these methodologies did not
provide answers to the issue of the ethnical origins of archaeological find-
ings, Dudik suggested these methodical approaches be combined in re-
search and united into a new and balanced scientific discipline that he tem-
porarily named the comparative archaeology of the prehistoric times, which
was closely related to both the existing methodology in archaeology and
traditional historiography. Dudik’s anthropological method was not in fact
new; it only placed emphasis on combining methods and results of different
approaches in archaeology and related subjects.
Dudik’s unrelenting interest in archaeology was symbolized by
another short and rather symbolic article he wrote for a specialized ma-
gazine in 1878, as well as his active participation in several archaeological
conferences where he was recognised for his activities. Nevertheless, Du-
dik’s work in the fields of archaeology and prehistory, both at home and
abroad, did not gain any significant acceptance in Bohemia and Moravia.
He enjoyed more fame abroad.
In general, Dudik did not bring anything new or revolutionary to
Moravian archaeology. However, he continuously emphasized its indisput-
able role in bringing about a deeper knowledge of the nation’s history and
its importance to the reinforcing healthy Moravian patriotism. Even if there
was nothing more that Benedictine Beda Dudik from Rajhrad contributed to
the archaeology of his time, it certainly is not insignificant given the context
of the 19th century when he lived and worked.
The Printing Office of the Rajhrad Benedictines
(Lucie Heilandovd)
The establishment of a printing office in Rajhrad by the Benedictines
was related to the development of the 19th century printing industry, when
great demand for printed media, including books and periodicals, came
about. The main initiator in founding the monastery’s own printing office
was Placid J. Mathon (1841-1888), who began writing full time in 1867,
184
Abstract
first as a writer and later as an editor and publisher. As early as the 1870s,
he was thinking about founding a printing office in the Benedictine monas-
tery in Rajhrad. That happened in 1881. Mathon headed the printing office
until 1886 when he had to resign from his position due to health reasons.
Initially, the printing office was located in a rented building in Biskupská
Street, where it was located from 19 April 1881 to the end of 1882; later, it
moved to its own building, a former boys’ seminary at No. 4 Dominikánska
Street next to the Episcopal alumnate. The actual operations of the printing
office started on 5 January 1883 at the opening ceremony when the enter-
prise was blessed by Bishop František S. Bauer.
By establishing their own printing office, the Benedictines of Rajhrad
wanted to gain more independence, support Czech literature, print all kinds
of Catholic treatises and books and works by religious writers. Therefore,
the production of the Benedictine printing house was rather specific. The
printed works were meant for Catholic readers and the printing office pub-
lished mostly religious treatises and works by the Rajhrad Benedictines
themselves, their translations, sermons and annotations. Also, because the
Benedictines were able to publish their own work, the Rajhrad Monastery
became a major centre of scientific research and literary production in the
19th century. The printing office also published works by Catholic writers
who had not been known at the time, such as first works and works that
could not be published without help. Driven by the aim to decrease expen-
ses, the printing office was combined with a publishing house and bookbin-
ding workshop from the very beginning.
The efforts of the Rajhrad Benedictines to spread and publish Catholic
literature were recognised by Pope Leo III not only by his encouraging let-
ters, but also by granting the title “pontifical” to the printing house as early
as in 1885: Tipografia pontificia dei benedettini di Raihrad. The pontifical
printing office flourished under Placid Mathon’s successors, Bernard Plaček
and Pavel Vychodil. Pavel Vychodil (1862-1938) became the head of the
printing office in 1896, but as early as 1885 he had been an editor for Liter-
árni hlidka (The Literary Watch) and had translated and written several
books published by the printing office. Thanks to Vychodil’s initiative, a
new three-floor building was built for the printing office at the comer of
Starobménská and Biskupská Streets in 1907. The architect was Anton
Müller, who designed a three-floor, modem apartment building with a cel-
lar that was able to accommodate not only the printing office, the bookbind-
ing workshop and a bookstore, but also the contemporary housing require-
ments. In addition to offices and an apartment for the printing office’s di-
rector, there were rental apartments on the upper floors. The rent was used
Abstract

to at least partially cover the expenses of the construction and maintenance
of the building.
In 1919, the printing office including the printing licence was sold to
the Agricultural Suite (Zemědělská družina) that became the exclusive ow-
ner and the Benedictines, who retained a small share in the printing office,
lost their influence over publications and were not able to prevent the dis-
continuation of certain periodicals and series. In 1920, the former pontifical
printing office of the Rajhrad Benedictines was renamed the Civil Printing
Office.
Between the Library and Publishing - the Life
and Work of Maurus Kinter
(Jindra Pavelková)
Josef Kinter was bom in Brno, at No. 403 Ferdinandova Street, to but-
cher Jan Kinter and his wife Josefa, daughter of Wedl Polavský, on 21 Fe-
bruary 1842 and was christened on the following day at the St. John’s Pa-
rish. At the age of five, he started to study with a home teacher and in 1848,
he started to go to St. James School in Brno where he completed four gra-
des. He finished school on 17 August 1852 and started to study at the K.
und K. Grammar School Brünn.
Before finishing his grammar school studies, following the advice of
his religion professor, Matěj Procházka, Josef Kinter applied for admission
to the Benedictine Monastery in Rajhrad. He was admitted as a novice on
17 August 1859 and took his vows on 5 April 1864.
On 1 September 1864, Kinter also became the monastic librarian and
in 1870 the monastic archivist. He remained in both positions until 1920
when he resigned because of old age. By 1879, he had recorded 9,000
volumes of books into the librarian accession books, compiled a catalogue
of 820 manuscripts, 900 volumes of incunabula and 880 maps. Naturally,
the number of volumes Kinter recorded during the time he administered the
library multiplied. However, towards the end of that period, books were
only freely added to the library without necessarily being recorded as Kinter
was fully engaged in his editor’s work.
Kinter more significantly debuted on the scientific scene in 1879. On
25 August 1879, a conference of abbots of the Order of Saint Benedict was
held in Melk. The conference resolved to publish a treatise on the occasion
of 1400th birthday of the Order’s founder to summarise and describe the

literary work of the Benedictines in the Hapsburg monarchy between 1750
and 1880. Maurus Kinter contributed to this publication entitled Scriptores
Ordinis S. Benedict!, qui 1750-1880 fuerunt in Imperio Austriaco-Hun-
garico with articles on the Benedictines of Rajhrad. At a meeting in
Meidling, it was decided that a scientific magazine would be published. The
magazine, first entitled Wissenschaftliche Studien und Mittheilungen aus
dem Benediktinerorden, was published four times a year with each issue
having about 200 pages. The first issue was published at the beginning of
1880. In addition to being in charge of the editors, Kinter was also respon-
sible for administration and correspondence until the end of 1910 when he
handed the work over to St. Peter’s Abbey in Salzburg. His editor’s work
took most of Kinter’s time and therefore, he only penned reviews and re-
ports on individual monasteries. Altogether, he prepared 1,238 manuscripts
for publishing.
The most important of Kinter’s own publications was published in
1908 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Abbot Benedikt Korcián and
was entitled Vitae monachorum, qui ab anno 1613 in Monasterio O. S. B.
Raihradensis in Moravia professi in Domino obierunt. The treatise deals
with significant Rajhrad Benedictines and still remains the most significant
work of its kind. It is a basic source of information for further work in this
field.
In 1911, Kinter suffered a double fracture to his right ankle. The pa-
inful consequences of this injury, as well as another injury he suffered at a
younger age, troubled him until his death on 26 June 1928. He was buried
two days later at the Rajhrad cemetery.
Post-War History of the Rajhrad Monastery
(Eva Richtrovd)
The decline of the Benedictine estate in Rajhrad had already started
with the first land reform (1919) and continued during WWII. The monaste-
ry buildings had been in serious despair for a long time and suffered further
damage during liberation. Before the Benedictines were able to start post-
war consolidation of their estate and continue partial pre-war repairs, the
first land reform had been revised (1947), followed by a new land reform
(1948). The reform in fact liquidated the remains of the monastery estates
and resulted in economic dependence of the monastic community on the
state. This was only the first stage to the planned, compete elimination of

monastic life. During the nationwide “K” operation, the Benedictine Mo-
nastery in Rajhrad was vacated at night from 3 to 4 April 1950. Two monks
were transported into a centralising camp, four of them were left to admi-
nister the monastery and surrounding parishes, one was pensioned and the
Abbot was interned in the Zeliv Monastery. The property of the order pas-
sed under the Religious Foundation. Vast artistic and historically precious
collections of artefacts in the monastery’s possession were entered into in-
ventory, appraised and gradually distributed into different state institutions.
The most important recipients included the Moravian Museum and the
Museum of Applied Arts in Brno. After a relatively long period, the mo-
nastery buildings together with the empty buildings of the Convent of the
Consoling Sisters of the Sacred Heart passed under the Ministry of National
Defence.
The first army units, namely the 53rd Auxiliary Technical Battalion
(Military Unit 9991), came to Rajhrad in 1952. Soldiers first worked on dif-
ferent construction projects such as a sewage system, a water pipeline,
roads, quarters and blocks of flats for professional soldiers. The Convent of
the Consoling Sisters of the Sacred Heart was labelled the Upper Convent
and was used as the Rajhrad garrison HQ, the headquarters of individual de-
ployed units and barracks. The Benedictine Monastery referred to as the
Lower Monastery was used as a warehouse. The following units were de-
ployed within the Rajhrad garrison: the 133rd Road Battalion (Military Unit
9991), the HQ of the 8lh Fortress (Rifle) Brigade, the 128th Fuel Tank Bat-
talion (Military Unit 9381), the 65th Automobile Battalion (Military Unit
8978), the 74th Engineer Road Battalion (Military Unit 1754) and the 2nd
Rearward Base (Military Unit 3877). Gradual vacating of the dilapidated
Benedictine Monastery that was a cultural monument and where the Mu-
seum of Literature in Moravia was supposed to be established started in the
1980s. The events of 1989 accelerated this process and redeployment of
military units from the Rajhrad garrison started, followed by the gradual
emptying of the monastery grounds. This was finished in 1990 when the
Order of Saint Benedict resumed their possession and the first members of
the monastic community returned to the devastated monastery.
