The history and the books of the 18th century Pauline monastery
from Ilieni
After the Reformation from the middle of the 16th century the region
of Háromszék (today Covasna county, Romania) embraced Protestantism
initially in its Lutheran, afterwards Calvinist and Unitarian forms. The
Roman Catholic Church lost ground and despite of the fact that the
medieval structure partly (archdeaconry of Kezdi) survived, it narrowed
to the northeastern part of its former territory with only a few parishes
remaining. Other small communities frequented the chapels nearby the
nobilitarian manor houses administrated mostly by Franciscan monks
from Csíksomlyó (Şumuleu Ciuc, Harghita county).
Subsequently, the unsuccessful attempts of the Franciscans and Jesuits
in settling and improving on the lack of priests, the activity of Mózes Nagy,
apostolic missionary of the the region, the founding of the gymnasium from
Estelnic (Covasna county) revitalized the hope of the Catholic communities
in the last decades of the 17th century. Meanwhile the Principality of
Transylvania bacame part of the Habsburg Empire, the reorganization of
the Roman Catholic episcopate from Alba-Iulia provided the support for
Catholic restoration in Transylvania.
In this quest a significant role was played alongside the Franciscan and
Jesuit orders by the Pauline friars from Hungary settled at the beginning of
the 18th century with the financial support of count Apor István, treasurer
of Transylvania, one of the main patrons of the Catholic Church.
In its studies, the current volume presents the activity of the Pauline
friars from Ilieni (Covasna county) from their arrival till the abolishment
of the order by emperor Joseph II in 1786, and also offeres a reconstruction
of their library.

Ilieni, one of the four market towns of the region, gained right of keeping
weekly and national fairs in the late 16th century and was a flourishing
Calvinist community till the Turkish-Tatar devastation from 1658, when its
temple with reinforced walls was devastated.
With the financial support of cardinal Leopold Kollonich, archbishop of
Esztergom (Hungary), and alongside him of the local noble families (Apor,
Béldi, Biális, Geréb, Kálnoki) who already had built a wooden chapel in the
last years of the 17th century, the friars took over the administration of the
parish from Ilieni in the spring of 1701. They were also welcomed at the
courts of the mentioned families.
After their instalation in their small, modest wooden monastery, the
friars gained the simpathy of the locals, who sustained them with donations
and helped in building a new stone chapel, and after that a bigger temple in
the middle of the century. The constructions were finalized by the 1770 s,
with the bell tower. The patrons also gained the privilege of being buried into
the crypt of the friars. Beside the casual donations the possessions gained
and bought by the friars, especially during the time of Marton Hilarion,
administrator of the monastery between 1733-1743, granted the financial
base of their missionary.
Alongside the convertings, the administration of the parish and its
surroundings, the restauration in 1762 of the Roman Catholic parish from
Sfântu Gheorghe, the main political and economical centre of the region,
can be mentioned among the succeses of the Pauline missionaries.
The monastery from Ilieni, the residence generally of two friars, cotinued
to function until 1786. After that its posessions were auctioned by the state
treasury, partly taken over by the local parish. From the goods of the former
monastery the parish still preserves a bell molded in 1775 and partially
its book collection, which numbered around 80֊ 100 volumes in the 18th
century.
In the second part of the present volume ther are presented studies
concerning the book collection of the former monastery. According to the
marks of possessors, the first register of the books dated from 1716 and
was actualised during the decades. The majority of them were theological
works by Fathers of the Church, collections of meditations and sermons by

Jesuit, Franciscan and Pauline writers, used and donated to the monastery
by the friars who activated there for shorter or longer period. The books,
written mainly in Latin, partly in Hungarian language date from the 16th-
18th century and were published in Bratislava, Casovia, Olomouc, Praga,
Trnava, in Germany (Augsburg, Bamberg, Ingolstadt, Köln), Italy (Venetia)
and Transylvania (Cluj, Oradea). The catalogue of these books (62 volumes)
and the conscription of the parish library during the canonica visitatio from
1823 are also presented in the present volume.
The activity of the Pauline missionaries from Ilieni can be integrated
in the recatolicization process of the 18th century, the presentation of their
library can bring us closer to a better cognition of the church collections
from Transylvania, in our case the eastermost monastery of the Pauline
order.
