Summary
The first evidence of the musical notation in Albania is that of the
byzantine one found in the medieval musical manuscripts. These
manuscripts are housed today in the Central Archive of the Albanian
State (Tirane) as a part of the collection named: codices of
Albania” that consists of 102 manuscripts and 17 fragments of
manuscripts. Most of the codices have liturgical content and come
from the city of Berat. In this collection, musicological interest
presents the nine manuscripts with biblical content that their fragments
are given with ecphonetic notation and the six manuscripts with
byzantine notation. Also ecphonetic notation we encounter in the folios
45, 110, of the codex Berat 1, known as codex “Beratinus Purpureus
1 ”(6th century).
The musical manuscripts of Albania come from five different cities of
the country and they date back from the 13 th century until the 19*
century. The manuscript Berat 23 is the oldest and the most important
musical manuscript saved in the collection “The codices of Albania ”
of the Central Albanian State’s Archive and also the oldest manuscript
written on arabic paper, bombycin. This codex is and its
musical notation is classified in the second period of the byzantine
notation, in the Middle byzantine notation (Round Notation). The
manuscript Permet 81 is the second oldest musical manuscripts of the
collection, dating at the end of the 13th century. We defined this codex
as Sticherarium of Minologio, Triodio, Pentikostario and Oktoecho.
The manuscripts Korqe 72 and Elbasan 87 were written between the
18th and 19th century. The manuscript Korqe 72 is an Anastasimatarion
— Anthology, whereas Elbasan 87 is a codex written in 1808, classified
as Heirmologium — Anthology’. Berat 90 and Tirane 95 are two
manuscripts of the small sizes. They are respectively Anastasimatario

of Petro Peloponisio, of the 18 — 19 century (eksegetical musical
notation) and Athology — Heirmologium of the 19th century (New
Method).
Part of the collection with number 488 is also the codex 101. This
codex is a simple notebook of the 20th century, which contains the
musical Minologion. Byzantine notation was also encountered to the
2nd folio of the codex Berat 9. This folio does not belong to the codex,
was putted there as a protective folio during a posterior bind. This folio
contains a fragment from the Mineon of month August.
During our research regarding the musical manuscripts we found
articles which testify our doubts and moreover, that the number of
musical manuscripts which existed in Albania were bigger comparing
to nowadays.
The two first testimonies came from the publications of Anthimes
Alesksoudis. The first was the article with title «Δύο σημειώματα εκ
χειρογράφων»79 80 (Two notes regarding the manuscripts) published in
1892, which evidence us that among the manuscripts that Skouripeki
saved were also two old Sticherarium. The second article
των έν ταις Ιεραις Εκκλησίας της συνοικίας Κάστρου...» proves the
existence of a manuscript of the year 1267 classified from Aleksoudi as
Triodio — Pantikostario. He writes literally that manuscript is
written in the old musical notation In the paper entitled «Κατάλογος
των χειρογράφων Αργυρόκαστρου»81 by Nikolas Veis, has been referred
a musical manuscript - Anthology - of the 18th century.

While in the Aleksoudis’ article, published in 1900 in the magazine:
«Εκκλησιαστική Αλήθεια» (The church’s truth) under the title
n Λ
codices of Berat ” ‘ («Κώδικες επαρχίας Βελεγράδων»), was described
a manuscript (Tetraevagelion) with ecphonetic notation.
Comparing to the above literature, the manuscripts that are in the focus
of our study: a) are not mentioned in the articles published until 1960,
and 2) The manuscripts covered by the relevant literature are not found
today in the CAS.
Concluding, we should underline that despite their small number, the
provenance of these musical manuscripts, their typological and
chronological variety testifies the spread, the existence and continuity
(from the 13th until the 10th century) of the byzantine psaltic art in
Albania.
