The Adjective. A Stylistic Research
Abstract
Preceded by several studies and articles in the field, the paper represents a
research which studies a grammar-related problem from a stylistic point of view,
which is an eloquent expression of interdisciplinarity Stylistic research requires
exhausting and fastidious work according to some experts’ opinion, but is, in our
view, necessary and efficient. Every investigation consists of a process entailing
scientific documentation, hypotheses, continuous searches, repeated attempts as
new horizons keep on opening in the challenge of searching and reaching the
limit, the target.
Embedding the relationship system — norm — speech, the present study
emerged from a dynamic scientific investigation, starting from aspects of gene-
ral stylistics and ending with a chapter dedicated to applied stylistics
For a few decades, stylistics has aroused many debates and controversies
regarding its “return”, “rehabilitation” or its “future”. Our systematic study
derives from the idea that stylistics is an autonomous science/ discipline amply
engaged in an mterdisciplinary dialogue with; grammar, literary theory, literary
critics and aesthetics, nairatology, poetics, semiotics, semantics, pragmatics,
discourse analysis, etc. The interdisciplinary contacts currently pertaining to
stylistics are numerous and complex, having as consequences the
interpenetration of metalanguages and an imprecise delimitation of the research
object in the related scientific areas. Under the circumstances, the stylistic
approach not only enables, but often imposes a multi-dimensional rephrasing of
the problems, theories and concepts. The methodological heterogeneity occurs
due to the openness towards certain types of reading, analyzing and interpreting
the body of texts, which stems from the veiy openness and mobility of stylistics
Hence, the circumscription of this field has always represented a major problem
for the researchers.
Even if the methodological and theoretical hesitations of stylistics have led
throughout the time to its being considered a discipline “at the crossroads”, ”a
border” discipline, a “dilemma”, "hybrid”, ”illegitimate” discipline, rt derives its
specificity from establishing the. features of individual styles (of speakers and
writers) and of functional styles, as well as from revealing the effective, expressive
and aesthetical values of the language and speech acts at all the levels.
Contemporary stylistics preserves the relationship between form/
expression and content/ idea. By applying the stylistic methods, the manner in

winch the ideas, conceptions and emotions are expressed through linguistic
means of expression can be observed, thus defirring (artistic and non-artistic)
individuality A literary text is not simply read but it gradually unfolds, the
receiver analyzing and ”undressing” its formal clothing in order to reach the
essence, the content.
From a different angle, contemporary stylistics is related to ”declarative
praxis”. Representing the ”study of language in its development”, it undergoes a
process of rebirth due to the dynamics of the language, to social and cultural
evolution, to the needs of human communication. Recent research no longer
lays emphasis on the concept of language as a system, but on its functional
aspect, on language as usage.
The present research dwells in the realm of studies, articles and research
papers dealing with the stylistics of lexical and grammatical classes. The adjec-
tive, being a flexible lexical and grammatical class, has a remarkable
expressive capacity due to its semantic and functional autonomy\ its close
dependency on the naun its unidirectional and partly bidirectional distribution,
expressing the characteristic feature and quality of the objects linguistically
named by nouns (the qualifying adjective) or the part of speech specifying the
objects (the non-qualifying adjective). The main aim of the study is to highlight
the stylistic potential which the adjective acquires in the Romanian language
and literature, with emphasis on the productive sub-class of qualifying
adjectives.
The stylistic study of the Romanian adjective involves good knowledge of
the linguistic and literary phenomena. The stylistic undertaking pursues the
process of transforming a linguistic structure into a stylistic context supported by
the expressive and aesthetical functions. Being a matter of contextual linguistics,
stylistics attempts at examining the particularities of language and style in
relation with the attitude or the thought triggered by a poetic state or as
expression of the relationship between creator/ speaker, logos and the world
Due to its autonomous semantic loading, the adjective can make its own way, its
own adventure, creating its own stylistic field
The main impulse m choosing this topic was determined by the current
confrontation of the linguist with situations and problems which are not
researched enough from a scientific point of view, which are ignored or contro-
versial. The noun and especially the verb enjoyed considerable interest from the
Romanian researchers in grammar and stylistics. The opportunity of our
research is motivated by the lack of a large and systematic paper on the stylistics
of the adjective.
The primary source of orientation in establishing the title of our research
was represented by Eugen Gampeanu s reference work The Noun. Stylistic
Study (1975). Yet, it is easily noticeable that the internal organization of the text,

the processing and the systematic and interdisciplinary approach of the research
subject, the interpretation and the selection of the examples (with slight
exceptions) are entirely assigned to the author of this study. No scientific paper
exclusively focused on the stylistic study of a lexical and grammatical class has
been published so far in a similar conceptual and structural way. This paper
differs from other studies of the kind by its deep analytical character, the large
number of contexts in which the adjective is used, the original manner of
processing, systematization, presentation and interpretation of the selected con-
tent
On the whole, the paper is conceived and structured from an
interdisciplinary perspective. The presentation of the facts pursues a systematic
pattern, the linguistic material is organized in well-outlined chapters and
subchapters so as to comply with the principle of stratification. The space
reserved to every stylistic fact is directly proportional to its importance, its
relevance and applicability.
The research strategy adopted herein is justified by the current context. An
important step taken in the investigation of each phenomenon has been the
choice of the methodology, which has to be permanently updated in accordance
with the current requirements. Since stylistics is a field exhibiting large
interdisciplinary openness, there is no definite stylistic rule. Here, the main
methods and procedures have been selected on grounds of the acquired
experience and according to the area and purpose of investigation
The synchronic perspective prevails in the stylistic research Thus, the
present study is essentially a synchronic one, aiming at accounting for the
theoretical, descriptive, analytical and interpretive levels. Various structuralist
elements have been used, while the stylistic analysis, the descnptive method and
the hermeneutical one have been predominantly applied
Every theory relies on a foundation encompassing other theories. This
study also implies some linguistic intertextuality. The older theories have not
been excluded in facto, but seme of diem have been shed new light on
Contemporary grammar and stylistics are in need of terminology refreshment
and readjustment. This approach aims at breaking the borders between tradition
and innovation. Researchers' different conceptions were stated to the extent to
which they were helpful in arguing, accepting or contesting a certam view. They
were not studied in detail since they did not fall under the scope of the research
The intention rather lay in clarifying the concepts, which is the first requirement
in research
Creating this favourable environment, the way in which stylistics proposes
methods and solutions for handling the problems of interest (the stylistic study of
the adjective class) has been pinpointed throughout the paper. This action was
governed by the belief that the application of stylistic methods in morphology

represents an important point in recognizing the autonomy and the scientific
nature of (Romanian) stylistics.
At present, morphology and syntax are jointly studied within the discipline
called morpho-syntax. By generalizing the fact that a linguistic unit acts
simultaneously as a part of speech and as part of a sentence, the role of the
syntagmatic parameter in morphology and the role of the paradigmatic
parameter m syntax have to be acknowledged From a grammatical point of
view, an integrating perspective in approaching the adjective would be required.
However, this paper outlines die grammatical and stylistic values of this class at
different levels, mainly for pragmatic reasons But the interpenetration of the
sub-systems of grammatical structure can be noticed at times, as well as of the
grammatical' semantic and pragmatic-discoursive dimensions, the last in the
string linking the system (language) with the language usage.
As part of speech and functional class, the adjective has aroused few di-
vergent interpretations in comparison with the pronoun, the article or the nume-
ral, the form-related problems exceeding the content-related ones. Different
opinions were issued relative to the etymology of die term, the definition of the
concept (from a logical-semantic perspective), the ”syntax” of the adjective, as
well as the categories of comparison and intensity, where expressiveness found
a favourable way of manifestation Some linguists tried to reexamine the
classical definition, by stating that the adjective does not express features, but
assigns features to objects. Because of the double etymology of the term adjecti-
ve, we made the difference between: grammatical assigning — adjective /
aesthetic or poetic assigning ~ epithet.
The chapter entitled The Stylistic Field of the Adjective illustrates the
behaviour and the expressiveness of this part of speech, joining its stylistic
values represented by words and structures with affective and aesthetical value,
figures of speech requiring the qualifying adjective lexeme. The stylistic
potential of the adjective was permanently related to grammatical and semantic
values and to its occurrence in communication The word-adjective is studied
from the perspective of its expressive power resulting from sound texture, its
graphical aspect relevant in literature, from the perspective of its connotation,
paradigm and its occurrence in structures, utterances and figures of speech If
there is a nominal and a verbal style, by analogy, we can have in view an adjec-
tival style.
The chapter entitled Elements of adjectival phonetic stylistics outlines the
expressive resources of the adjectival phonetic structure (the onomatopoeia, the
adjectives' phonetic symbolism as well as other phenomena of phonetic stylistics:
phonetic synonymy, repetition or long pronunciation of sounds, speeding up or
slowing down in the rhythm of speech, abrupt utterance, pauses, stress, intonation,
etc ), but also phonological figures of speech (alliteration, assonance, tautophony).

Consequently, we undertook a research regarding the facet of the adjectival
significant with examples from literary texts or samples of’language in use”.
Elements of versification, prosody and meter can turn into stylistic fads
and they play a part in the significance process when the phonetic-prosodic,
graphical and syntactical levels interact The sound content is of interest for oral
literature and common speech, but it is also of interest for the written text,
especially for poetry, where graphic and rhythm marks are added In this case
the adjective proves its quality of instrument which enhances poetic harmony by
means of its contribution to verse construction, to rhythm and rhyme, thus
becoming a construct of the text. The poetic text is perfected by euphonic
connections, creating semantic and emotional connections. Thus, the verse
becomes the music of words, a carrier of emotions
The dynamic evolution of the Romanian vocabulary has been granted
increased attention during the current period of important technical and scientific
advancement The chapter called The Expressiveness of the Adjective from a
Semantic-Lexematic Perspective refers to the area in which the qualifying lexe-
me-adjective manifests stylistically.
Due to its prolific and active nature, to the large range of transfer
possibilities among the lexical and grammatical classes, the conversion is
included m the category of language facts highly exploited at stylistic level.
Lexical and grammatical transposition is achieved by changing the grammatical
behaviour of the transformed word, which acquires the morphological and
syntactic characteristics of the adoptive class totally or partly. From among the
conversion types we insisted on the methods referring to filming nouns into
adjectives and adjectives into nouns.
An important subchapter was dedicated to the relations and the adjectival
semantic categories adjectival synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, homonymy
paronymy, as well as the figures of speech relying on these categories. Popular
etymology is provided mainly as a game of the expression and the content of the
message, as deviation from the norm
A large space was dedicated to the adjectival epithet and its relation with
other figures of speech, taking into account the fact that the epithet is the
prevailing figure of speech involving the adjective. The term was used in its
acknowledged consideration of epithet as poetical assigning As the adjectival
semantic content referring to chromatics is quite generous, we included a
subchapter in which we explored the expressive potentialities of some chromatic
adjectival lexemes
The grammatical categories accomplish the stylistic analysis
paradigmatically, whereby the phenomena of syntax resorting to the adjective
prove the expressiveness of this class syntagm atically The categories of gender,
number and case pertaining to the noun joining the adjective are formal

categories for the adjective; they belong to the area of expressiveness and not of
content, which accounts for the need for agreement The grammatical categories
specific for the adjective are comparison and intensity, which are morphological
ami stylistic features and stem from the semantic and structural availability of
adjectives to compare and to renew using different degrees of intensity
Given its semantic and functional autonomy, the adjective is of interest
due to its capacity of making communication topical and consequently being an
instrument of linguistic and artistic communication We obviously referred to
the adjective as a part of speech and lexeme, thus as an element of the system of
speech, combining the descriptive method with the functional one. The
problems regarding the subjective organization of the utterance are included in a
chapter on expressive or affective syntax. This chapter tackles the
expressiveness arising as the result of the availability for combination which the
Romanian adjective poses. Therefore, we outlined the stylistic function of word
order, the complex phenomenon of repetition, the symmetry, the syntactic
parallelism, the enumeration and the ellipsis of the adjective
Romanian possesses a rich inventory of phrases and collocations. Such a
language rich in phrases as Romanian is has many expressive resources
Our choice of including in the lexical level the figures of speech requiring
the qualifying adjectival lexeme and not in a distinct chapter may be surprising.
By such an approach we intended to establish a connection between matters of
language and style.
The present research demonstrates that, in Romanian, the class of
adjectives is a permanent source of ennching the vocabulary and a source
generating expressiveness. Having a qualifying and characterizing meaning,
acting as a modifier of the object, the adjective constitutes a main means of
artistic achievement through words, participating in the process of creating
meaning in the artistic language. Carried by the wave of the linguistic context, it
can create or accomplish an imaginary world
The theoretical aspects rely on a rich corpus of specialized bibliography, as
well as of bibliography which is complementary to grammar and stylistics,
mainly making use of the titles published during the last few decades. The
reference list does not exhaust the theoretical bibliography, but it rather contains
the fundamental one.
The large corpus subject to illustration, analysis and mterpretation is
mainly made up of fragments or literary works, explored more or less by the
critics and they belong to different generations of Romanian writers. We also
added fragments of old literary traditional texts (chronicles) or texts illustrating
other stylistic varieties of Romanian, including examples from contemporary
media
It is rightly stated that ”a method has the same value as the person using

it”, that it proves its validity and efficiency by means of the results obtained
With the experience acquired we attempted at creating a scientific work. It
represents the first scientific work of such proportions dedicated to the stylistics
of the adjective in Romanian, without claiming to be an exhaustive research
study During our research we encountered certain difficulties while overbidding
the syntactic and the pragmatic layers as a result of the priority granted to the
”predication” function of the language. The investigation can be compared with
a labyrinth, with a winding road, imposed by successive returns and
re-evaluations. We started form the assumption that no work is perfect, it rather
moves towards perfection. We were not able to provide final answers all the
time, as a good answer raises a new question No matter how simple a subject
may be, it can disclose unimagined facets.
By outlining the stylistic field of the qualifying adjective in Romanian we
mtended to prove that stylistics has not been totally disregarded yet and that the
interest for stylistic research has not decreased By changing the manner of
approaching the literary text, by means of the importance granted to the process
of linguistic communication, by the use of the modem means at its disposal, by
the multiple interdisciplinary relations, this field has enlarged its horizon and it
has refined along with the time. Being part of an ”open” field, our paper
remains an ”open” one as well. The efforts will definitely continue as we have
only managed to take a step further.
