The 70th anniversary of the death of Father Władysław Slderkowsld
(1941-2011)
Father Władysław Skierkowski made a considerable impact on popu-
larization of the culture of the Kurpie region. Musically talented he played
organ and sang with a choir; ordained in 1912. When serving as a vicar in
Myszyniec, he began to document folk music of the Kurpie region. In 1925,
when Skierkowski moved to Imielnica near Płock, he became an associ-
ate with the Płock Learned Society (Towarzystwo Naukowe Płockie). Un-
der the aegis of the Society he published a book The Kurpie Forest in Song
(Puszcza Kurpiowska w pieśni) in 1928 followed by successive books in the
years 1929-1934. He is the author of a play The Kurpie Wedding (Wesele
na Kurpiach) put on by the Płock theatre from 1928 on and published in
1932 and 1933. Father Skierkowski was murdered by the Nazis in the Sol-
dau concentration camp near Działdowo during World War II.

Music of the Kurpie region and Polish music,
the role of Father Władysław Skierkowski
BEFORE 1920, music of the Kurpie region was unknown in Poland due
to the isolation of the region situated in inaccessible forests and marsh-
es on the Russian-Prussian border. It was this isolation that became the
source and basis for its originality as well as identity and archaic quali-
ty. Music of that region was discovered by Father Władysław Skierkowski
who in the years 1913-1939 wrote down the notes and texts in the region-
al dialect of over two thousand songs. Thanks to his work and some help
from the Płock Learned Society they reached Karol Szymanowski in 1928
to inspire him to compose 18 pieces, consisting an important part of his

oeuvre and of Polish music. Many prominent Polish composers, including
rectors of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, wrote superb com-
positions inspired by the music of the Kurpie region. Nevertheless the
Kurpie music still remains little known to the general public.

Magical music of the Kurpie region
Although a natural scientist I have always been interested in music. In
2010, I spent some time in the village of Bandysie in the Kurpie region
and was utterly captivated by the local songs full of magic and energy. The
unique quality of the traditional Kurpie music is made up of a number of
elements, especially its means of expression and its message; the difficult
execution performance of the songs is extremely important as well. In
the instrumental music of the region duple time prevails over triple time.
Other fields of music often draw on the traditional Kurpie sources. Sym-
phonies, choral compositions, pieces which combine different styles draw
on or merge with the Kurpie traditional music. Unfortunately it works
both ways as one observes an alarming impact of modern times on tradi-
tional music. Numerous festivals and competitions whose aim was to pro-
tect tradition have inadvertently deformed it by placing it in the crammed
space of a stage. It is worth keeping in mind that the gist of traditional
music consists in its functionality. To maintain this music s role in society
it is of key importance to preserve its uniqueness. And its magic.

Towards traditional music of the Kurpie region
The AUTHOR points to the exceptional value and complexity of the Kur-
pie lyrical songs, stating that to render them correctly one must go back
to musical scales older than the major-minor scale used universally today.
This is the first executive difficulty. The second one is the internal rhythm
of these songs - not fast and not too slow; yet another ֊ their emotional
expression ֊ neither sad nor cheerful.

Style of forest songs in the Kurpie region
The Kurpie Forest in songs, a collection by Father Władysław Skierkow-
ski, has been the source of inspiration for many Polish composers. Com-
posers, academics as well as performers and audiences are attracted by
the uniqueness of the musical and executive aspects of the Kurpie for-
est songs. These are usually old songs, in slow tempo, well-remembered
and known in the entire Kurpie region. Many are based on the pentatonic
scale even in the purely anhemitonic form not going beyond ambitus of
the major sixth. They are abundantly ornamented. Characteristic for the
Kurpie region songs, including the forest songs, are quintuple and octu-
ple meters, as well as changeable meter. Special characteristics of the ex-
ecutive aspect: apocope, whispered upbeat, voice switching to falsetto
and improvisation complete the picture of the unique style of the Kurpie
forest songs.

The Kurpie Wedding by Father Władysław Slderkowski
as the best interwar stage adaptation
of traditional rituals
Father Władysław Skierkowski apart from being the first expert col-
lector and researcher of the Kurpie region folk songs produced a mod-
el example of a stage adaptation of a wedding ritual based on his script
written in 1925. He chose the most communicative form at that time
֊ that of a peasant wedding presented on stage. Initially, The Kurpie
Wedding was directed chiefly to the non-Kurpie audience and per-
formed by professional actors of the travelling theatre company Te-
atr Regionalny of Tadeusz Skarżyński. In the socio-cultural context
of the period, the stage production of The Wedding appears as a spe-
cial ethnographically unique achievement of great artistic value which
helped raise interest in the tradition of the Kurpie region and enli-
vened the sense of national community in the reborn Second Polish
Republic.

Father Władysław Slderkowsld ֊ discoverer
of the Kurpie region customs and folklore
Local traditions of the Kurpie region were documented for the first
time at the beginning of the 19th century, however, the most significant is
the work of Father Władysław Skierkowski who recorded over two thou-
sand pieces in the years 1913-1936. The first sound recordings were made
in the 1930s, while the State Institute of Art coordinated collection of tra-
ditional music in cooperation with the Polish Radio in the 1950-1954 pe-
riod. More than 1750 songs and instrumental pieces from the Kurpie re-
gion were tape-recorded; over 1950 songs were written down by hand. The
characteristic way of singing in the natural environment of a forest and
open fields was slow, ‘continuous’. It is marked by the local dialect and
style, as well as tonality and rich melismatics (in ritual and church songs).
Apocope (dramatic pause, a more silent or silent last syllable) and whis-
pered upbeat are its archaic characteristics. Kurpie singers often close
the stanza in a yodeling manner when the voice timbre turns into falset-
to, voice color and registers are modulated combined with rich glissandi,
diversified accents and dynamics. Cutting short the ends of stanzas was
purely practical: it made listening to the echo easier, helped to hear the
song in an acoustic space - the forests reply.

Symbols of life in songs of the Kurpie region in the works
by Karol Szymanowski
The archaic songs of the Kurpie region abound in poetic and symbolic
texts as well as expressive individual beauty of melodies. The symbolism of
traditional songs has strong religious foundations. The original, archaic me-
lodic-tonal formats present in the Kurpie region and eastern Poland repre-
sent characteristic equivalents of emotional standards to express wisdom
about life and human empathy with nature. The two Kurpie Songs cycles
by Karol Szymanowski emphasize sacral sensitivity and symbols of life in
songs of the Kurpie region selected from Father Władysław Skierkowskis

collection. The Kurpie music and texts became an inspiration for the great
composer. The musical portrait of the old Kurpie region created by Szy-
manowski thanks to Skierkowski’s collection has become a manifestation
of the beauty of the region as well as of the wisdom of the forest people.

From Szymanowski to Górecki. Songs from the Kurpie region
in choral works by Polish composers
The AUTHOR discusses songs from the Kurpie region for a capella choir by
three Polish composers: Roman Maciejewski (1910-1998), Romuald Twar-
dowski (born 1930) and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (1933-2010). Their Kurpie
songs are pure masterpieces both as far as aesthetics and the inventive cho-
ral texture are concerned. The choral texture goes far beyond the framework
of choral works composed today. The author discusses musical achieve-
ments with emphasis on choral texture. She also deals with their achieve-
ments relating to the elements of individual pieces of music and their im-
pact on the shaping of sound: horizontal and vertical structures, time lapse,
dynamics, articulation techniques and rhythm, and presents the three
composers connections with tradition and their individual sound idioms.

The music of the Kurpie region in compositions
by Jan, Franciszek and Tadeusz Maklakiewicz
THE ARTICLE is devoted to composers from the Maklakiewicz family: Jan
Adam (1899-1954), Franciszek, alias Izbicki (1915-1939) and Tadeusz Woj-
ciech (1922-1996) and their works drawing on traditional folk music, espe-
cially the music of the Kurpie region. The author quotes fragments from
Tadeusz’s diary describing their family home, their mother Rozalia nee
Izbicka born at the border of the Kurpie region, his organist father and
composer brothers. This is an emotional testimony, a valuable first-hand
document that introduces the reader to the three composers as artists,
talented musicians and ordinary people.

Composition model in the Five Kurpie Songs for a female choir a capeTla
by Stanisław Moryto
The composer s masterly technique, carefully cogent and consistent con-
stitutes one of the main attributes of his individual and highly original
style. In each of the five pieces (that include chosen Kurpie melodies) he
created an elaborate autonomous structure, a kind of a composition model.
The author discusses three models (motif accumulation, melodic expansion,
tonal intensification) and analyzes them. Such an approach to composition
resembles that of Bela Bartok s. It shows the composer perceives traditional
folk music as personification of the pure idea of music, an idea that is amaz-
ingly succinct, distinctive in form, economical of means, fresh and direct’.

Five Laments from the Kurpie Region by Paweł Łukaszewski
Paweł Łukaszewski drew on the Kurpie funeral songs included in the
third volume of The Kurpie Forest in Song by Father Władysław Skierkowski.
From among 44 laments he chose five, with their original texts and melo-
dies. Although he looked to earlier arrangements of the Kurpie songs, none
of his predecessors drew on the religious funeral songs. Łukaszewski treats
the original texts and melodies with respect. He enriches them with unique
tonal harmonics. Sometimes he applies ornamentation (appoggiaturas and
acciaccaturas, mordents) as well as drones to suggest folk stylization. How-
ever their role is purely to add color and expressiveness, not interfering di-
rectly with the folk originals.

for both the sound, in themes drawn on folk music, and construction, re-
lating to the composer s interest in geometry, realized on the basis of vi-
vid diagrams as inspiration for the form. The Kurpie region inspirations
constitute a significant motif among the numerous folk elements in his
works. Noteworthy is the filtering of construction elements such as me-
lodic-rhythmic quotations or formal models into the deep layers of a com-
position. These elements, transformed in style, appear as reminiscen-
ces. They seem to permeate almost the entire oeuvre of the composer, in
close relation to the idea of a melody that evolves in casual rhythmicality,
sounding in the background, emerging from silence and disappearing into
silence. The Kurpie inspirations in Panufniks work can therefore be seen
as a foundation for his musical idiom that combines geometric formulae
with the narrative of Mazovian traditional songs.
