Resume
Eqrem Cabej was main figure of the Albanian studies in field of
linguistics, as well as in field of the Albanian culture in general during the
XX century. As of the time when he emerged with his first scientific
papers at the end of ‘’20’s, and during his lifetime (he died in 1980), for
about 50 years, his work in various fields of albanological sciences and
highly appreciated and undisputed results in scale regional and European
scale ensured him and his work a place in the forefront, central place of
the whole scientific work of the past century.
As a young man, as student of well known scholars of the time —
Paul Kre^mer, Norbert Jokl, etc., in the Austrian universities, he would
start his studies on the popular Arbresh compositions, to continue
linguistic studies of those languages and a bit later (years ’30) studies for
particular figures and songs spread over the Albanian popular literature in
general, always put in context of the literatures of the people on Balkans
and broader, to cross over to studies on the compositions of distinguished
Renaissance writers and of those coeval of the author (Jeronim de Rada,
Naim Frasheri, Gavril Dara - i Riu , Zef Serembe, Gjergj Fishta and
Lasgush Poradeci ...). He also published literature books for secondary
schools, in parallel to other very important compositions, in which he
would propound various theoretical literature problems of streams and
direction in literature of the European nations and influence of such
literatures on the Albanian literature, but also and on literature of other
nations in Balkans.
It is worth to emphasize the fact that Eqrem f’abej in his studies is
conspicuous for broadness, almost astonishing for scholars of the time,
always considering in his views, thorough and comparatively, problems in
historic, political and literary contexts, compositions of particular authors
and common attributes, which he would note at a number of Albanian
authors and of other nations, especially of the Balkan undersky meaning
of .Southeast Europe. And all of these — as scrutinizing as he was, he
would compare those with criteria, values and attributes of the most
distinguished authors of direction and streams of the western European
literatures.
£abej seemed convinced that in order to start studies of the
Albanian language and its main attributes, firstly the popular poetry
should be considered and reviewed, since therein he ‘’has seen and sought
bases for literature” — as he used to say, in entirety. He used to say “it

would be appropriate that a historic study of the Albanian literature is
preceded by an overview of the popular poetry՜’.
Our author considered Arbresh popular poetry only a discontinued
branch of the Albanian popular poetry in general, even a branch, which
due to the fact that it did not encounter influence of the ottoman culture
preserved spirit and characters and way of singing out of these influences.
Parallel to this, there he would find great nostalgia for the fatherland left
under ottoman occupation and deeds of heroes in fight with the invader,
an element that would preserve national traditions over there, despite high
pressure of the new environment and a great European culture. The very
same motives, and sung by talented Arbresh poets, would be noted and
studied in detail by £abej in poetic composition of Arbresh (De Rada,
Gavril Dara — i Riu, Zef Serembe, Zef Skiroi), always as part of the
artistic Albanian poetry. In all fields of albanalogy studies of e Cabej
(which he studies) and in all dimensions — one can easily spot cultural-
historic method that author has followed, a method that was widely
applied in West European literature in the second half of the XIX century
by several distinguished authors. £abej was one of the first scholars that
dealt with issue of separation into periods of the Albanian literature and
he reached a almost original conclusion: a fair separation of the Albanian
literature should derive from historic periods, but from cultural and
literary circles. Based on these criteria he noted four cultural and literal
circles: catholic circle of the Northern Albania, Italian - Albanian circle,
orthodox circle of the southern Albania, and at the end, national literature
of XIX century”.
By putting in front of each other the two main poets of the
Albanian romantics: Jeronim de Rada and Naim Frasheri he concluded:
“Italian - Arbresh poetry is a Balkans matter spilled in roman shape, its
authors in foundation are directed towards the West. Contrary with these,
Naim is simple Balkans poet and as such is of half oriental nature”.
Besides these two great poets, Cabej carried a through study of
compositions of Arbresh poets: Gavril Dara - i Riu and Zef Serembe. as
well and albanian poets: Lasgush Poradeci, in whom £abej noted rare
talent of a modem poet, with a “heavy stile”, which should be understood
more like a poetry that requires a high level education, and Gjergj Fishta.
whose composition (Lahuta e Malcis), according to him — with characters,
artistic figure, with metafora and other elements, reminds one of the great
cycle of Giants’ songs (“Kengeve kreshnike”) and other compositions of
Balkans people ((Kurora e maleve by P.P.Njegosh, instance.),- but it is 5

original composition, deeply rooted on tradition, culture and heroic deeds
of Albanians, to save the albanian roots, language and manhood.
Even though many of the studies in field of literature were carried
out in young age by Çabej, - for their thoroughness, methods applied and
results and conclusions regarding various literature issues, - such are
reference points for literature studies also in our time.
