of the period 1945 ֊ 2006 in the perspective
of conceptions of Aleida and Jan Assmann
Summary
The book presents an analysis of changes and continuity of the content of cul-
tural memory of the citizens of Olsztyn after the Second World War. The analysis
is based on chosen examples of anniversary celebrations (days of remembrance)
commemorating some of the most important occasions from the history of the
town and the region. These are: an anniversary of granting a town charter to Olsz-
tyn in 1353, celebrated in 1953 and 2003, and an anniversary of incorporation of
the Warmia region to Poland in 1454, celebrated in Olsztyn in 1954 and 2004, as
well as (as a comparative element) ֊ anniversary celebrations of the so called Sec-
ond Peace of Thorn from 1466, celebrated in 1966 and 2006. The analyses are based
on the conception of cultural memory by Aleida and Jan Assmann.
Chapter 1 contains assumptions of the conception of cultural memory the
most important for further analyses, and it simultaneously attempts to place theo-
retical perspective of Aleida and Jan Assmann within academic discourse of collec-
tive memory. In the initial subchapters the Assmann s’ propositions are presented in
reference to the chosen most important theoretical perspectives applied in Ameri-
can and European studies on memory. Problems of perception and application of
the category of collective memory in Polish and German humanistic discourse are
analyzed more broadly.
The following subchapters indicate inspirations and origins of fundamental
theses presented by the two German researchers, as well as present characteristics
and elements of the Assmanns’ conception that distinguish it from other theoreti-
cal and analytical propositions.These considerations are the starting point to indi-
cate assumptions of the concept of cultural memory crucial for further analyses.
In Chapter I the most important analytical categories are also presented, in-
cluding communicative memory and cultural memory, as well as distinguished with-
in the latter, function memory and store memory. It must be stressed that cultural
memory and communicative memory are not presented as opposing but comple-
mentary categories, while function memory and store memory are described in
relation to the foreground (function memory) and background (store memory)
perspective. Discussion on the meaning of these basic concepts was supplemented
with explication of categories such as counter-memory and figures of memory.

Here also specificity and main features of the conception of Jan and Aleida
Assmann are presented, such as: underlying of equivalence of the processes of re-
membering and forgetting in collective memory (and in cultural memory as its
part), as well as the influence of the frameworks of remembering on content and
meanings of cultural memory
The end of the chapter describes modifications of the conception of cultural
memory in context of application of this theoretical perspective to studies on cul-
tural memory of the citizens of Olsztyn.
Chapter II is devoted in the first place to methodological grounds of the book.
Reasons for choosing anniversary celebrations as the basis of the analyses are
presented. Also chosen Polish research on anniversaries and anniversary celebrations
as phenomena characteristic of collective memory are discussed. These considera-
tions are the starting point for presenting the basis for choosing anniversary celebra-
tions analyzed subsequently in the book. Also the choice of cultural memory of the
citizens of Olsztyn as a subject of analysis was justified.
Explanation of these issues is widened with short characteristic of historical
conditions that influenced cultural memory of Olsztyns citizens after the Second
World War. Historical background of anniversary celebrations is sketched also with
outline of history of the town and the region, as well as historiography of Olsztyn
and Warmia. These themes were undertook in order to show the context of cultural
memory of the citizens of Olsztyn, that creates, in chosen moments, specific frame-
works organizing memory and remembering.
Chapter II presents the basis for choosing and characterizes sources (materi-
als) used in the analyses. It must be stressed here that the choice was based primar-
ily on so called mediums of memory presented by Jan and Aleida Assmann.
Chapter III contains results of attempts of applying the concept of cultural
memory to the analysis of anniversary celebrations of granting a town charter to
Olsztyn in two moments ֊ in 1953 and 2003.
First, it presents issues connected with organization and scope, as well as im-
portance of anniversary celebrations of this event in the middle of 20th and at the
beginning of 21st century. It is important to indicate the change of frame of refer-
ence within which the celebrations of the anniversary of granting a town charter
to Olsztyn took place. The change has been associated not only with very different
political, social, and economic situation. Also the way of celebrating the jubilees,
institutions and individuals involved in organization of the celebrations came out
to be different. Vital differences has been observed also in the scope of anniversary
celebrations and their importance for the local community, which greatly influ-
enced interpretation of content and meanings of cultural memory.
Subsequent analyses presented in Chapter III have lead to conclusions, among
which some are to be perceived as crucial.

Above all, a thesis of Aleida Assmann about functions of cultural memory has
been confirmed, especially with regard to legitimization of present authority and
delegitimization of the former. Also changes in a way of choosing and interpret-
ing the content transmitted by mediums of cultural memory during the last half
century have been presented. The aims of cultural memory have occurred to be no
less important, especially a shift from subordination of an image of the towns past
to the theses of current ideology, as well as indication of new priorities, such as:
strengthening bond of the citizens and the town and thereby pride in its heritage
and diversity, strengthening the sense of belonging and bonds with the territory. The
past is no longer presented only from the perspective of national and state history
Local history with all its specificity has came out to be more important and now it
dictates themes and points of reference for historical description or periodization.
Chapter III presents also analyses of changes and continuity of meaning, con-
tent and values connected with chosen figures of memory and their influence on
cultural memory of the citizens of the town that manifests itself during chosen an-
niversary celebrations.
Application of the ideas of Aleida and Jan Assmann enabled to grasp conti-
nuity and change in cultural memory, reflected in changes of landscape and town
symbolics.
Chapter IV focuses on slightly different problems. Analyses presented here
are based on examples of anniversary celebrations referring to events important in
the history of both the town and the region, such as incorporation of Warmia to
the Kingdom of Poland in 1454 and the Second Peace of Thorn in 1466. Different
content, meaning and values have been and are associated with these celebrations,
which is proved by the analyzes of celebrations of 500th and 550th anniversary of
incorporation of Warmia to Poland in 1954 and 2004, and celebrations of 500th and
540th anniversary of the Second Peace of Thorn in 1966 and 2006.
While the example presented in Chapter III refers to the event that according to
the Assmanns5 conception can be described as “extracted” from store memory and
transferred to functional memory the examples in Chapter IV indicate the opposite
process. The analyses proved that the events from the mid-15th century especially
important for the postwar vision of the state and the region, had lost significance in
the new millennium. Not only has the attitude to the sole anniversaries, both region-
al and national, changed, but also their role in transmissions of cultural memory
The analysis of celebrations of incorporation of Warmia to Poland has re-
vealed also another phenomena. It is important, among others, that very different
interpretations of the same event, symbols and notions coexisted in the same time
and have been presented depending on who certain statements had been addressed
to. This point was already raised in Chapter III, however the analysis of the celebra-
tions form 1954 and 1966 have revealed its new dimension, that is how strong is

the influence of the present on how is the past perceived and portrayed. It has also
shown that the present can not only redefine, but dominate historical description.
The analyses presented in Chapter IV had shown also continuity and change
in the way content is chosen and meanings of cultural memory are understood, as
well as possibilities and power of control that authorities on different levels have
over the whole process in different periods and under different political systems.
Chapter IV, as the previous one, presents conclusions of analysis of content,
meanings and values associated with chosen figures recalled during the celebra-
tions of incorporation of Warmia to Poland. In this case these were not only in-
dividuals, but also collective heroes. In addition, changes in both content and
meanings assigned to, among others, names of geographical and historical regions,
were presented. The history of usage of names such as Warmia, East Prussia, and
Warmia and Masuria revealed simultaneously the strength of a place as a medium
of memory and an important element of social identification.
Content and meaning of cultural memory of the citizens of Olsztyn, as well as
their continuity, transformations and substantial changes are presented also in ref-
erence to analysis of symbolical gestures and symbols present in the towns space.
Presence of the latter, as well as their condition and changes that certain monu-
ments and boards have undergone, show not only continuity of collective memory,
but also durability or decline of patterns drew in the 50 s, sometimes manifested in
physical changes in the ways of commemorating the past.
In Conclusions of the dissertation the following topics are addressed.
In the beginning, an attempt to show the specificity of cultural memory of
the citizens of Olsztyn is presented, manifesting itself during chosen anniversary
celebrations. In order to do so, this parts recalls and structures, presented in the
proceeding chapters, the most important conclusions from the analyses of cultural
memory of the regional community that have been and is composed of the citizens
of the town central for the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
These conclusions enable to indicate what kind of local communities can be
investigated with the ideas of Jan and Aleida Assmann. Not only advantages and
possibilities of applying the concept of cultural memory to investigate different
kind of territorial communities are presented, but also difficulties and limitations
that researchers referring to theoretical and methodological foundations formulat-
ed by Aleida and Jan Assman have to face. The results of application of theoretical
perspective of the Assmanns and the analytical system proposed by them are im-
portant, as well as reservations and doubts referring to the conception of cultural
memory present in humanist academic discourse.
The end of the chapter brings attempts to indicate possibilities and perspec-
tives of applying the Assmanns’ conception in various research in Polish sociology.
