SLIVEN AND ELENA DURING THE REVIVAL
CONTRIBUTION TO THE RESEARCH
(Summary)
A number of studies and research projects from the distant and recent past
have been dedicated to the history of Sliven and Elena region. Although separate
publications and scientific comments about various newly discovered source
materials continue to appear today, the first decades of the 19th century still remain
insufficiently studied. This book includes documentary sources mainly from
this period: literary works, family notes and previously unknown letters related
to the history, spiritual and literary life and way of living in these Bulgarian
territories. They show the role of the Bulgarian municipalities in the development
of enlightenment during the Revival, they reveal their connections with the
monasteries of Mount Athos and more specifically with Hilandar - one of the main
centres for the preservation and maintenance of the Bulgarian cultural traditions
and national identity during the second half of the 18th century and the first decades
of the 19th century. Many of the discovered documentary sources shed new light
on certain facts, circumstances and episodes, as well as related famous historical
figures that have been left imprecisely or not fully interpreted. They have been used
as a background to examine unknown biographical moments in the life and work
of the scholar and hieromonk Joseph of Hilandar, the taxidiote of Mount Athos
in Sliven and later a spiritual confessor in Elena. There is also new information
about two notable persons in Elena who made their own attempts in the literary
field, Hadji Jordan the Beard and Hadji Jordan Kisyov, as the data about them from
historical information, which has reached us and is discussed here, is interwoven
with some additional facts from the new source evidence related to hieromonk
Joseph.
Joseph of Hilandar, with his Talk on the benefits of reading from the late 18th
- early 19th century, has a lasting place in the Bulgarian literary history. The paper
is keptat the State Library in Moscow (Russian State Library, f. 87, № 31 .V, old
sign. Grigo/ovich, 1711). So far it has been known only as an anonymous copy.
Thanks to discovered letters of hieromonk Joseph to the Hilandar monastery on
Mount Athos, which we publish here in full, another paper of the scholar was
identified using paleographic methods - Catechism of 1806 from the collection of
the National Library in Sofia (Cyril and Methodius National Library, № 781). On
the basis of language and style, a third work of Joseph of Hilandar was discovered -

Brief talk with teachings, known so far only as a copy of ah anonymous writer. It is
part, together with a copy of the catechism, of a handwritten collection-konvolyut
from the late 18th - early 19th century, originating from the East Bulgarian Balkan
region. Today the collection is kept at the National Museum in Prague (sign. IX
H 10).
Joseph of Hilandar reveals his personality most fully in his correspondence
with the Hilandar cloister. One could feel in the documents the new features in
the content of the Revival letter - his confessional spirit, though very contained
and imbued with feelings of self-reproachfulness, compassion and helplessness at
the outrage over the Bulgarian population during the period considered. This is a
period of deep crisis of the feudal system in the Ottoman Empire during the first
decades of the 19th century, which has found expression in the violent internecine
wars between kurdjalis and the Sultan government in the defeats suffered during
the Russo-Turkish wars of 1806-1812 and 1828, as well as during the Greek
uprising of 1821, in which many Bulgarian revolutionaries took part.
The life and work of Joseph of Hilandar are a transition from the monastic
and spiritual to the teaching and moral. As a teacher and educator, with his Talk
on the benefits of reading, he raises some controversial moral and methodological
issues of school education and self-learning, of the discipline of individual reading
and perception of the reading. The internal conditionality of the literary process,
as early as the 18th century, determines the establishment and dissemination of
publicism, which later formed into a genre. As an apology of the book and reading,
the work of Joseph of Hilandar as early as the 19th century naturally fits into the
art form of the publicistic literary genre, which later became dominant during the
30-40 years of the century.
The Hilandar monk subordinated his intellectual efforts to the specific needs
of his time. With the emergence of the cells of a new type, the desire for education
increased markedly. The students learned not only the practical-theological
disciplines but also philosophical and theological as well as moral and instructive
readings in accessible language. The Bulgarian-Russian literary and spiritual
closeness, revealed mainly in the last quarter of the 18th and the first decades of
the 19th century, provoked his interest in the Russian preaching literature. Joseph
of Hilandar oriented himself towards the works of bishop Platon of Moscow, a
prominent figure of the Russian Enlightenment and a reformer in the spiritual
education, and conducted in 1806 an adapted translation of his famous catechism
textbook “Началное учение человеком, хотящим учити ся книг Божественнаго
писания“ („Primary teaching to people who want to learn the divine Scriptures“).
That was a time when the dissemination of the translations of the catechism works
in „simple“ language in the framework of the traditional confessional genres
directly responded to the increased educational needs of the epoch.

The third identified work of Joseph of Hilandar, which we called Brief talk
with teachings, approaches thematically, stylistically and lexically the other works
of the scholar. It contains teachings for the anonymous Christian reader, including
reflections and guidance on how to implement prayer, instructions for fasting, calls
for renunciation of excessive worldly pleasures, etc., supported by examples from
the Holy Scripture, human experience and the surrounding reality.
The publication makes an attempt to delineate the activities of the above-
mentioned two notable persons from Elena who made attempts to express
themselves in the literary field and to shape their image based on the data collected
so far. The connection of Joseph of Hilandar with Hadji Jordan the Beard dates
back from his Siiven period. As for Hadji Jordan Kisyov, we can guess that he had
contacts with the Hilandar cleric during his long stay in Elena. Their biographies
are interwoven in the general drama of the preparation and the brutal suppression
of Velchova Conspiracy (Velchova Zavera) in 1835. Both wealthy men from
Elena had spiritual interests, alert civic consciousness and high prestige among
the population and the Turkish authority. Their path of life, however, was radically
different and changing. Hadji Jordan Beard is a trader with literary interests, a
publicly active person and revolutionary. He was hanged when revealed to be a
participant in the preparation of Velchova Zavera as a result of the slandering of his
godson. Hadji Jordan Kisyov was a trader, churchwarden and book lover of many
years. His life is also associated with the failed Velchova Zavera, but stained with
the mark of his betrayal.
Both notable persons from Elena were writing people, the first one was a
calligrapher, while the second one had no calligraphic gift. In the collection
compiled by Hadji Jordan the Beard (Sofia National Library, No. 1332), containing
mostly samples of letters, there are valuable inscriptions, clarifying important
moments of his spiritual life on Mount Athos, containing information about
contacts with specific persons, a message for built (renovated) church in the
village of Bebrovo, near Elena, from which we can conclude that he was probably
one of its founders. Although Hadji Jordan the Beard remained briefly at Iviron
Monastery on Mount Athos, and subsequently gave up monasticism, according to
the memoirs of contemporaries, the pure monastic traditions of faith and worship
were preserved in his family.
Regarding the other notable person in Elena - his godson Hadji Jordan
Kisyov, his personal copy of Synaxarion (Perpetual Calendar), printed in 1840 in
Bucharest, of which he was a zealous promoter, has been preserved (today it is kept
in the early printed fund of Sofia National Library, sign. Ct. 40.54. V). Gradually,
over the years, he transformed the blank places in the book into a kind of family
chronicle. Hadji Jordan Kisyov continued in his own way an established literary
tradition, richly documenting his personality in his most frequently opened book.
He also used the Synaxarion for something very innermost - to record his sin,

writing down by his hand his betrayal, although years after the suppression of the
Conspiracy: as a confession and as belief that this will contribute to its forgiveness
and that his descendants will understand his genuine remorse.
What is common for the three representatives of the public cultural and
literary life in the area of Siiven and Elena is their marked attitude towards the
enlightenment and the literary process, sometimes leading to sanctification of the
book and the reading process.
The new documentary materials support the research of literary life and
spiritual connections with the settlements in the area, as well as on Mount Athos,
of Kotel literary centre located closely, which is known for its rich output from the
second half of the 18th and the first half of the 19th century.
The published new source data, most of which is also presented phototypically,
could serve as a starting point for researchers from different fields to find other
ways of interpretation of newly revealed processes and phenomena, which could
express and characterize more fully both the tradition and originality in literature,
book-learning, culture and national life in these Bulgarian areas, which is one of
the basic principles for shaping the image of the Bulgarian Revival process.
