Galaxies and Cosmology
This textbook provides an introduction to our Galaxy,
galaxies in general, and the study of the origin and
evolution of the Universe. The emphasis throughout is on
the interplay between theory and observation that has led
to our current scientific understanding of the cosmos.
Compiled by a team of experts, this revised edition has
been designed for elementary university courses in
astronomy and astrophysics. It is written in an accessible
style that emphasizes physical understanding but avoids
complex mathematics and is suitable for self-study. It will
appeal to amateur astronomers as well as undergraduate
students.

Mark H. Jones is an astronomer at The Open University.
His research interests focus on circumstellar and
interplanetary dust.
Robert J.A. Lambourne is Professor of Educational
Physics at The Open University with a background in
particle physics and a long-standing interest in theories of
relativity and gravitation.
Stephen Serjeant is Head of the Astronomy Discipline
at The Open University where he undertakes research on
galaxy evolution and gravitational lensing.
