Summary
The study about the education and the development of the
schools in Albanian in the region of Derven of Shkup in the period
from 1945 to 2005 represents a special part of the history of the
education system of the Albanians in that region. Specific conditions
and circumstances under which the schools in Albanian language used
to work make this part of the history of the education development
particular.
Following the decline of the Kingdom of Serbs Croats and
Slovenes, especially after 1930, in some villages of Derven suqh as,
Ra$e, Bojane, Radushe, elementary schools in Serbian language were
established. The teaching curricula were based on those of the
education system of Belgrade. Their aim was to make more difficult
the life of the Albanian pupils and make an effort of assimilation of
the Albanian population.
During the WW II (1941—1944 ), in Derven near Shkup, schools
did not work.
After WW II, especially at the beginning of 1945, in every village
of this region schools in Albanian language were opened. Due to the
lack of conditions in some of villages, schools were opened litde bit
later.
The Albanian population did not inherit anything else from the
education system in other languages such as Serbian language but
illiteracy. At the very beginning, the process of setting up schools
faced many difficulties. The authorities were in front of situation were
there was lack of school buildings, lack of teachers, large number of
illiterate people etc.
Courses and workshops were organized in order to produce
teachers and other education cadre aiming to uproot the illiteracy of
men, women, and young people.
Since the percentage of the illiterate people was very large (over
95%) especially in the first phase of the development of the education
and schooling in Albanian language, the population had a negative
connotation about this process.

In the first phase of the education in Albanian language in this
region, respectively in 1952/53, the first eight year elementary school
was opened. In the second phase eight year elementary schools were
opened in other villages such as, Bukoviq, Saraj and Radushë
(1960/61).
In the following phases, when the numbers of pupils increased
and school buildings were set up, schools were opened in villages
such as: Sullare e Epërme, Dvorcë, Shishovë and Matkë, where
teaching is organized from the 1 st to the 4rth year of the elementary
school.
In the period from 1966 to 1980 (third phase), the situation with
the education had improved a lot. The inclusion of the generations,
the equipping of the classrooms with teaching means evidently
improved. There were more qualified teachers and their material
position had improved as well. All these changes together contributed
to the increase of the level of teaching skills. This improvement made
the negative opinion of the population change.
During that period the elementary school was obligatory. These
schools were as well cultural centers that contributed to the uprooting
of the illiteracy from the region.
The Albanian population in this region, same as in other parts of
Macedonia inhabited with Albanians was fighting hard to get out of a
very difficult situation. It fought for progress in the education, culture
and for schools in Albanian language. It used the legal infrastructure
to achieve equality in studying, uproot the illiteracy and insure
obligatory elementary education.
The fourth phase from 1981 — 1990 is characterized with new
reorganizing of the elementary schools into a so called Elementary
Organizations of the Joint Labor ( OBPB.)
This phase is characteristic of a policy against everything that was
Albanian, especially against the education in Albanian language. Such
an anti-Albanian policy was “cooked” in Belgrade, while the
Macedonian authorities were there to execute it. This wras the phase
when many teachers wTere discriminated and fired being blamed for
serving the “Albanian nationalism and irredentism.” The strategy
required taking notes and documentation to be done in Macedonian
language. There was as well an attack on the teaching religion. The
use of names of places in Albanian language was changed and some
texts, books, curricula, maps originating from Albania and Kosovo

were censored. The high education in Albanian language suffered as
well from the discriminatory policy. A number of discriminatory anti-
Albanian measures were undertaken against everything that has been
created in the spirit of the Albanian nationhood, especially the
schools and the education system in Albanian language. This period
as well marks a very important phase of the history of the Albanians
fighting for their natural rights.
The fifth phase from 1991 to 2005 is characterized with the fall
of the communist regime and beginning of the democratic processes.
On this occasion many high school parallel departments in Albanian
language that used to function in various high schools were opened
again. The Pedagogical Faculty was reopened in Shkup, the South-
Eastern Europe University in Tetove ( SEEU) was opened in Tetove
and the University of Tetova was recognized and became the third
state University in Macedonia. The Faculty of Islamic Sciences was
previously opened as well in the village of Kondove near Shkup.
Recently the University of New York w~as opened in Saraj. Now
students from Derven of Shkup in considerable numbers attend
schools in all levels of education. In this phase positive changes have
been marked. In this phase of democratic process, it is the time of
radical change and improvement of the quality of the education which
should lead toward better future for young generations.
Today, the situation with the schools and the education in
Albanian language in Derven of Shkup, the elementary, secondary
and the university level situation is as result of the work of the
teachers-veterans that worked hard in this region during the phases
mentioned in this book. They merit special respect and honor.
